  • Raurekau (Manono, Kanono or Kawariki) in the foreground is one sign of a regenerating ngahere. Possums and Deer love this rakau and will often chew and ringbark it and eat the leaves. Seeing these rakau rangatira come back makes my heart sing. I won't get into the debate of 1080 but I will say this piece of ngahere was one of the first to get it and years later the birds are back, the regenerative trees are growing and there are no signs of pest droppings anywhere. Raurekau will always sit close to my heart because we couldn't find it for a while due to pests. The other destroyer of Raurekau is us. Man goes in to harvest and either uses the wrong tools or unintentionally harvests too much or ring barks the tree. I made the mistake of showing someone how to harvest the inner bark the way I was taught not realising they only took in what they wanted (how to get the bark) and dessimated the majority of the rakau in that area. Kawariki might be a sign of a regenerating ngahere but it is up to us to ensure the restorative process continues.

  • Teina isn’t the only one that enjoyed a bit of hotel life!! We don’t have a full size bath at home so I ran myself a bath and melted a big chunk of my raurekau soap into the water... It was milky, sweet and silky and I swear this stuff seeps into your soul! Obsessed yes, but there is aroha in the preparation of this, from harvest all the way to its careful wrapping by whanau and delivery with special messages! 😘 I feel a little guilty about all the wai māori, but I made the most of it!!! 😬🐳🛀🏼 @soaps_by_roi #rongoamāori #raurekau #myfave #obsessedwithsoap #downtime

  • I put a small skein of wool into my dye pot the other day … quite a pretty yellow I think.
Not sure how reproducible it is tho 🤔
