  • A decade after the first Hutong Bubble was realized in Beibingmasi Hutong, MAD architects unveils the ‘Hutong Bubble 218’, emerging from the chinese capital’s old neighborhoods. The intervention is part of a restoration effort in 305 sqm traditional courtyard house that dates back to the Qing Dynasty, which the studio has now completed. Each Hutong Bubble appears as if it has landed on the roof, its smooth mirrored surfaces reflecting the ancient buildings that surround it. Seemingly blending into the environment their presence is at once unfamiliar and complementary.

  • 🤩 Don’t miss this unique collection of gourd cricket cages 🦗 in our online auction 🔨 ‘Chinese Works of Art from the Collection of Quek Kiok Lee, Part One’ 🤩
.
☝🏻All these crickets cages are made of moulded or carved gourd and are dating from the 18th to the 19th century 🕰
.
🤓 Keeping crickets as pets were commonplace, started by Imperial concubines during the Tang Dynasty💃. By the Qing Dynasty, elaborate and decorative cages were produced in porcelain, metal and gourd which made perfect homes for the crickets 🦗. The art of crafting these cages was highly specialised and was often exquisitely decorated with auspicious symbols or animals.
.
☝🏻 These beautiful cricket cages are from the private collection of Quek Kiok Lee, a well-respected Singaporean collector 🇸🇬 who started gathering Chinese works of art in the 1960s. Mr Quek was not just a collector, he meticulously researched every piece and collated detailed records 📝. .
👀 Last public viewing of this sale is this Saturday, the 23 November, from 12 to 4pm ⏰
.
Don’t forget the bidding is closing online this Monday 25th at 8pm ⏳😱

  • Fragrance of Spring Flowers: An Imperial Courtyard Scene by He Shikui is a monumental panting that captures the essence of late Qing aesthetics. The hairstyles, costume, and jewellery of the sitters are crisply rendered in detailed brushwork, embellished with gold pigments. The Intense colour of the blooming peonies and the dynamic diagonals of the architecture give life and body to the imperial garden setting.

The central sitter bears a remarkable resemblance to official court portraits of the Emperor Daoguang. The other figures in the scene also closely resemble imperial family members, as documented in our dedicated catalogue to this imposing painting.

  • Taiping Houkui tea, translated as “peaceful monkey leader” is only grown and produced at the foot of Huangshan, “Yellow Mountain”, in Taiping Prefecture, Anhui, China. This tea has been made there for about one hundred years dating back to the Qing Dynasty. Taiping Houkui won the "King of Tea" award at The China Tea Exhibition in 2004 and is often listed as a China Top Ten Tea.
Taiping Houkui is known for its "two knives and one pole", two long, flat leaves wrapped around a single bud with white hairs. The tea uses the Shi Da Cha variety which is a large-leaf plant found only in Anhui Province. Unlike other Green Teas, Taiping Houkui is not rolled. It is dried quickly using heated bamboo baskets. Shāqīng or kill-green, the deactivation of the enzymes promoting oxidation takes place during this unique processes step. The finished leaves the leaves can be as long as six inches.
Good Taiping Houkui is a delicious, unique tasting experience. Unfortunately, this batch of tea was stale and almost undrinkable. All the other teas at AT’s tasting session were outstanding.

  • To someone this Buddha may look like a piece of iron, but to the other it may be a great work of art. Good eyesight never comes free. We can see as much as we know and it enriches our lives.

  • Antique gold and pearl bangle from the extravagant/ really extra Qing Dynasty. Qing style always reminds me of Rococo. No biblical motifs, but always with super complicated chinese symbols for prosperity and good fortune, such as the dragons and clouds on this bangle. The circular shape itself also carries positive messages (union, completion, flowing fortune...) I love how chinese jewelries are not only beautiful, but also embody such meanings on them. .

  • • The three wives of Emperor Qianlong •
1) Empress Xiaoxianchun also known as Empress Fucha (1712 – 1748)
was born on 28 March 1712, as part of the Manchu Bordered Yellow Banner Fuca clan. On 3 September 1727, Lady Fuca married Hongli, the fourth son of the Yongzheng Emperor. Together they moved into the Palace of Eternal Spring in the western part of the Forbidden City. During that time she gave birth to one premature daughter, one premature son and a daughter, Princess Hejing of the First Rank. On 8 October 1735, Hongli was enthroned as the Qianlong Emperor. Lady Fuca, as the emperor's primary consort, was instated as Empress. She was praised for her calligraphy skills and knowledge of classical works. The Empress was well-respected and virtuous and greatly loved by the Emperor. Lady Fuca did not like spending too much money and instead of wearing jewellery, she wore artificial flowers in her hair. In May 1746, Lady Fucia gave birth to the emperor's seventh son, Yongcong, who died prematurely two years later. The Empress was heartbroken and the Emperor determined to cheer her up, took her on a trip to Shantong. During the trip, she became seriously ill and eventually died on 8 April, aged 36. The Emperor was grief-stricken and was never the same again.

2) Hoifa-Nara, the Step Empress (1718- 1766)
By the time of Empress Fucha's death, Empress Nara was the "Noble Consort Xian", two ranks below the Empress. She had been in attendance at the emperor's court since the age of sixteen. Although her family background was not as high as the first Empresses, it was still high enough. The Emperor was not too eager to see her assume the role of the new Empress and she was given the title of "Imperial Noble Consort" - she was able to carry out all the responsibilities of an empress without actually having the title. After the trial period was over, she was finally coronated. Nara took her new role seriously but the relationship between her and the Emperor was not one of love but duty. Events, however, were about to take a dramatic turn. The Emperor was travelling with his companions and en route celebrated the Empress' birthday. • continued •
