  • My husband and I volunteered with a group which was organized through Meetup. We reached out to the homeless who have taken refuge in the East Village area. We took our time to meet and greet them before we handed out the food. We were not prepared for so many who needed food. We had to disappoint a little girl who ran across the street and asked us if we had any snacks left. Finally, we walked through Fault Line Park where a woman was huddled in the corner near a bench. A security guard came by reprimanded her for trying to lay down as it is against the park policy!!! The worst policy so far is that teens (under 18 years) have to leave the shelter after 8 pm if they are unaccompanied by adults. This was shared by a volunteer who helps out at Standupforthe Kids.
Policies need to be changed. If you want to volunteer, please search San Diego Meet up Sandwich Saturdays

California Gov. Jerry Brown had signed Assembly Bill (AB) 1219 into law. AB 1219, known as the California Good Samaritan Food Donation Act
If any restaurant wants to help out, we will greatly appreciate.

  • Shoutout to the people out there feeding their pets before they feed themselves. You shouldn’t have to make those sacrifices - I promise to keep fighting to help you.
Everyone deserves a bond like this one - this pup gets to be with his favorite person all day every day. No 8-10 hour days in a kennel. He gets to travel the city on a bicycle with his little apple shaped head poking out of a backpack. He is happy. He makes his person happy. That is a beautiful thing.
Thank you @mandee_jo_ for allowing us all to stay connected to the Pets for Life program. You are a bad bish 💪🏼

  • About 15 million children in the United States – 21% of all children – live in families with incomes below the federal poverty threshold, a measurement that has been shown to underestimate the  needs of families. Research shows that, on average, families need an income of about twice that level to cover basic expenses.

Using this standard, 43% of children live in low-income families.

Most of these children have parents who work, but low wages and unstable employment leave their families struggling to make ends meet. Poverty can impede children’s ability to learn and contribute to social, emotional, and behavioral problems. Poverty also can contribute to poor health and mental health. Risks are greatest for children who experience poverty when they are young and/or experience deep and persistent poverty.

Research is clear that poverty is the single greatest threat to children’s well-being. But effective public policies – to make work pay for low-income parents and to provide high-quality early care and learning experiences for their children – can make a difference. Investments in the most vulnerable children are also critical.

  • "Before my father and mother weren't interested... Now they want me to go to school every day." In rural #Afghanistan, cultural constraints are just one of many barriers to #GirlsEducation. But without adequate schooling, many may end up in a continuing cycle of #poverty, unable to help their communities thrive and prosper. 📖 🙋💡 By working alongside parents and religious leaders, the Aga Khan Foundation aim to ensure that everyone enjoys the benefits of a well-educated society. Informed young women are better equipped to escape domestic violence, provide safer and healthier environments for their children, and take a lead in civic life. 👭 🎉
