  • 🥔 mating adult Colorado Potato Beetles 🥔 adult beetles hibernate in the soil or garden debris, and then emerge in the spring (that would be April in Missouri) 🥔 after emerging, they do not have enough energy to fly and must walk in search of suitable host plants (preferably the emerging potato plants) 🥔 they also walk in search of a suitable mate 🥔 after feeding and mating, females lay yellow-orange eggs in clusters on the undersides of the leaves 🥔 in 4-15 days (depending on the air temperature) hatching occurs, and the voracious larvae begin feeding on the foliage (up to one month) 🥔 when mature, they drop from the plant, enter the soil and pupate, emerging as adults 5-10 days later 🥔 there are 1 to 3 generations each year 🥔😳🥔

  • My daughter’s school project turned into such a fun adventure this morning. She had to look for different insects, observe their habitats and create her own little habitat for an insect/s that she would like to keep and observe. Her big brother and her friend decided to join in and it was so much fun watching and listening to them as they explored. They were so excited with their findings. As they were looking for bugs a mommy duck came so close to her big brother, and it actually scared him. The duck didn’t see him and he didn’t see her 🦆. It was the cutest thing watching her and all of her babies.

  • First garden pest of the season. I only saw this guy but I know where there's one there's a thousand more!
.
.
Colorado Potato beetle also know as a potato bug. They are a huge problem for your tater plants.
.
.
Natural control methods
Handpicking and neem oil spray are my go to methods to keep these guys under control. You can also use floating row covers but a word of caution these guys over winter in the soil so if you plant your taters in the same spot every year they my be under your row covers already. .
.
What garden pest have you been dealing with already? ..

  • I meant to post this yesterday on Five-dollar Friday. (So just pretend it’s Friday) 😅
.
Earlier this week I got the call that this little guy (Mo) ended up in ER at @ethosvethealth after becoming very, very sick. Sadly, his owner had to make the difficult decision to surrender him to a rescue in hopes of saving his life. The financial burden of trying to save him was very substantial, as he needed 24-hour monitoring by vet/staff in addition to several expensive diagnostic tests.
.
The kind folks at @roadogs jumped in and opened their doors (and bank account) in hopes of giving Mo a possible second chance at life.
.
.
After a couple nights at the hospital, his vitals were stable and he finally started to eat on his own, so I picked him up to foster him while we wait on his test results. Not sure if he has a bacterial infection or the “c” word. Test results will be in next week. For now, he seems to be feeling better with each day.
.
.
His vet bill is currently over 5k and likely to grow if he needs oncology treatments. So if you can find it in your hearts to give a donation to his care (even $5 helps!) I know @roadogs would appreciate it! They save a lot of very difficult medical case dogs, and they spare no expense to rehab their rescues to give them the best quality of life going forward.
.
.
Mo is not currently available for adoption until they find out more about his medical results/needs. If you are interested in learning more about Mo and his availability, please reach out to RoadDogs via their website.

  • Long way from home

These tiny bicycle tire tracks puzzled me until I found their source: a wingless cricket-like creature related to New Zealand's #weta. Common names include #JerusalemCricket or #potatobug
Although capable of giving a painful bite, these squishy bugs are not aggressive and just want to be left alone to munch on compost and watch the sunset.

Even though their name implies that these little guys are bugs, they're not actually insects, but crustaceans. They're in the isopod (meaning same pod or foot) family and have seven pairs of legs that are all similar in size and shape. Roly-poly bugs also have three main body parts – head, thorax and abdomen – as well as simple eyes, uropods, a pair of prominent antennae, gills and lunglike adaptations. As terrestrial creatures related to marine animals, they need moisture to survive but cannot live submerged in water.

Roly-poly bugs have many unique adaptations. They have an exoskeleton with plates. They may not be able to bite or sting, but many are able to roll up into a ball for protection and also use odor as a defense. Roly-polies have even shown social behaviors such as fighting over food and communicating by tapping with their antennae. They absorb water with food, through mouth parts or by capillary action through their uropods. These cold-blooded critters react strongly to humidity levels, light and temperature changes. They like dark, moist areas, and if left out in the sun, they perish.

Roly-poly bugs are decomposers. They digest waste like scat as well as decaying matter from dead plants and animals, and then return the essential nutrients back into the soil. Because roly-polies are sensitive to changes in the environment, they also serve as biological indicators for the health of ecosystems. Additionally, roly-poly bugs are a food source for other animals.
