Most women when their milk letdowns has a feeling of calm, peace, or connection. However some women have a feelings of sadness, anger or despair this is called Dysphoric Milk Ejection Reflex(D-MER). It is a psycological response that a woman can't control thought to be caused by a disfunction in dopamine. Here is some more info from d-mer.org, there is a link in my bio, where you can learn more. "Dysphoric Milk Ejection Reflex is a condition affecting lactating women that is characterized by an abrupt dysphoria, or negative emotions, that occur just before milk release and continuing not more than a few minutes.

There are three intensities of D-MER that included mild, moderate and severe. These intensities are determined by the mother's interpretation of intensity, how long the D-MER takes to self correct, how many letdowns per feeding she feels the dysphoria and other criteria."

  • One of the most important aspects of my postpartum doula service is giving an Ayurvedic oil massage. New mothers have little to no time for themselves and this is their moment. 😇⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In Ayurveda it is said that Vata aggravates most after giving birth. Hydration and calming the nervous system are one of the most important methods to bring Vata back into balance. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I make my oils myself because the massage starts for me with the preparation of the oil, by an intention, prayer, mantra or a song. And the oil carries this into the treatments I believe. ✨⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

  • There has been a lots of emotion in our home of late, and lets be honest its mainly me!

Excitement about returning to work!
Nervousness, about returning to work!
Mum guilt, about returning to work!

Today, Mila went off to her school as a Kindy kid! I have a couple of days over the next two weeks of soaking up one on one time with Evie while Mila is at school. Then in two and a half weeks I officially step foot in my new clinic space!

I can't help but reflect on the last year... Did I organise the spare room/office - NO
Did I finally get those photos printed - NO
Are we in a routine - NO
Did I go out everyday - NO
Did I finish any blogs - NO

but then I ask... Did I have a peaceful post partum period - YES
Did I soak up all the gooeyness of my new baby and growing first bubba - YES
Did we do things that bought us joy and weren't stressful - YES
Did I nourish my body - YES
Am I still getting woken through the night - YES 😂

Alas...I'm now in prep mode to switch my brain back into business, prepping some glorious content for you all, and warming up my muscles ready to hit the ground running!

  • All the feels for a Monday. 😴 The choices and preparations that you make before birth have a great impact on your birth experience.
🍃
If you or someone you know would be interested in private evidence based childbirth education classes or having doula support please get in touch ASAP. I’m starting to lock down class dates and my doula schedule for 2020 and I’d love to support you.

  • ✨Pain ✨
One of the most popular questions about child birth is always centred around ‘PAIN’ . •Did it hurt? •Did you have pain relief? •Etc etc
Society not only wrongly associates birth with being a medical procedure, but they smother it with negative pain assumptions. 🙅🏻‍♀️I wish we would STOP doing this! ✨What I love most about ‘Pain’ discussions with people is that every single person has a different perception of pain, & has experienced different levels of emotional and physical pain throughout their lives. ✨

I love this page in @rheadempsey_birthingwisdom book that provides a visual of ‘zones’ ranging from comfort to transformation. •

Every woman is capable of stretching these zones further when in labour, especially when she has an experienced midwife, birth doula and support team that create her ‘circle of confidence’. 🤍

Birthing in confidence, surrounded by soft loving confident support is what all women deserve. ✨Highly recommend this book to all mamas xx

The sweetest little Soul.
She has taught me resilience and patience, and started my journey into parenthood and rebirth.

  • To prevent injury and still workout everyday I work on different areas of my body each day. .
.
.
Example week’s workout:
Sun: Core
Mon: Arms
Tues: Chest & Back
Wed: Legs
Thur: Core
Fri: Arms
Sat: Chest & Back
Sun: Glutes & Hams
.
.
I sometimes put in a Full Body workout to change it up or a day of cardio and good stretching of legs and glutes. .
.
This is just what I need. You could completely change it up for what you’re needing. .

  • How are you supporting yourself in your postnatal care? Through social media and our cultural expectations there is a lot of pressure for mothers to get back to their pre-baby activities soon after their baby arrives.

There are cultures where newborn mothers are nurtured, honored and supported by their 'tribe'. Often creating sacred acknowledgement of the postnatal phase or the first 40 days after birth.

Most mothers are left alone and feelings of isolation, insecurity and self doubt lead to postnatal depression and more commonly postnatal anxiety. ‘A postnatal doula is here to 'mother the new mother' to help her find her confidence, hold space while she develops her new mothering skills or just hold her baby so she can have a shower and get out of her PJ's!’ - kindred birth

At The Australian Doula College we offer Doula’s for all of life’s greatest transitions. You can find experienced and skilled Doulas across Australia through our member directory.

  • She asked me if she could use my baby wrap. I absolutely said !YES! you can use it to carry your baby. She saw me using it before and figured out how to put it on and had a near perfect wrap. 😍 Our kids just want to be close to us. Keep them close and remember they’re always learning from us even when we don’t realize it sometimes. 💕

As a postpartum doula I show parents different ways to carry their babies to keep them close AND still have your own two hands free.

  • NEW SIBLING // navigating the transition of becoming a big sibling can be a tough one - when we brought our baby girl home there were some tricky times, (mostly for me - not her big brothers😂) but for the most part it was pretty seamless. Here’s some advice for those of you bringing a new baby home to their big siblings!⁣⁣
✨⁣⁣
1. 𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘪𝘴 𝘬𝘦𝘺! If you’re soon to be big sibling is still pretty young (my youngest son is 20 months older than his sister) don’t underestimate how much they understand & absorb about the baby in mommy’s “belly”. Talking about it frequently can help them put two and two together once baby arrives.⁣⁣
✨⁣⁣
2. 𝘉𝘰𝘰𝘬𝘴! There are some great books that talk about becoming a big sibling, swipe to see our favorite!⁣⁣
✨⁣⁣
3. 𝘈𝘴𝘬 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘱 𝘰𝘳 𝘢𝘥𝘷𝘪𝘤𝘦. Ask them to help you out by grabbing a diaper or wipes, or what socks do they think baby brother or sister wants to wear today?!⁣⁣
✨⁣⁣
4. 𝘖𝘯𝘦 𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦. This can be difficult with a newborn but trying to snatch any alone time with your older child is so important to remind them not everything has changed and that they too are super special to you!⁣⁣
✨⁣⁣
5. 𝘒𝘦𝘦𝘱 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮 𝘣𝘶𝘴𝘺. Newborns eat a lot! So it can feel like you have your hands full for the majority of the day. As a postpartum doula I offer clients the option to add on a big sibling basket to their package. Full of age appropriate quiet activities to bring out while you nurse/feed the baby. Another reminder for them that they too are special even when mommy’s busy.⁣⁣
✨⁣⁣
Bringing a newborn home to big siblings doesn’t have to feel like a daunting task! With the right preparation, communication and love it can be an instinctual, smooth transition.⁣⁣

  • Maybe you’ve seen this image floating around? There are a few problems to note.
1) This image was posted for a U.K. audience and doesn’t apply in the US.
2) One may not use the term #babynurse unless one is also already a registered nurse in the US. I am a registered nurse, so I can call myself a baby nurse, but others who are not can find them facing the law if they call themselves such. This is why it’s important to ask your candidate if they are a nurse or an NCS and whether they have been certified as an ICNCS (Internationally Certified Newborn Care Specialist) through the NCI or if they are only certified via a training program. This is why I have been called The REAL baby nurse. #therealbabynurse
3) Lastly, and the most important part of the image, is that in the US the difference between a postpartum doula and a newborn care specialist (“baby nurse”) is that a #postpartumdoula is focused on the mother of the baby while the #newborncarespecialist is focused more on the #newborn. Both can focus on the couplet.

  • I wish you were closer!⠀
⠀
Well, good news! I serve a lot farther than just Stratford. In fact, I’m rarely even in town!⠀
⠀
I’ve attended births at the Stratford, London, St Thomas and Goderich hospitals and the families have been from all over those surrounding areas. ⠀
One of the major benefits of hiring a doula is that the care comes to you! You get prenatal visits, labour support and postpartum check-ins all from the comfort of your own home.⠀
⠀
Swipe to the next photo to see a general idea of where I travel to. Trust me when I say you’re probably not too far away! And on the off chance that you are, I’m always happy to refer you to some of my wonderful colleagues.⠀

  • Squatting. This is the position I pushed in for the next hour and forty-five minutes. •
Pushing felt great! It was rewarding to see (I watched through a mirror) and feel the progression with each contraction. I was absolutely amazed by this process and shocked when I was told how long I was pushing... It felt like I pushed for no more than 20 minutes! 🤯
•
At some point during crowning, my contractions slowed down quite a bit and weren’t as strong as they originally were. My midwife offered me Cotton Root Bark 🌿, which I gladly accepted under my tongue. Exactly 5 minutes later, our baby’s head was delivered! •
In this moment, time stood still. I knew that with the very next contraction, we’d meet our baby girl and our lives would never be the same. I quickly asked for someone to take a picture before the rest of her body was born, because I felt more powerful than I ever imagined. I wanted that memory forever and am now so thankful to have that photo to look back on and one day show Ashlynn. Have I mentioned how incredible our bodies are?! •
Two minutes later, at 11:46am, the rest of her body was born and my midwife immediately placed her in my arms. 😭

Foods that are nourishing are key in postpartum.

The postpartum body needs:
✨Warm foods
✨Easily digestible
✨Grounding foods ✨Bio-available nutrients
✨Collagen, gelatin, fats
✨Comforting foods ✨Spices that warm the body and aid digestion
✨Whole foods that meet nutritional requirements

But most importantly:
People need to eat ENOUGH. It is all too common to see postpartum parents surviving on crackers and leftover take out due to logistical struggles.

We’d love everyone to have a first 40 days type experience but we also know it takes a lot of privilege to accomplish that so here’s to the PB&J sandwiches getting plenty of people through.

What do you think of when you hear “nourishment”? #fridgeporn #postpartum #showupforpostpartum #postpartumfridge #nourishment #nourishedparents #postpartumdoula #postpartumdoulas #postpartumdoulasdothat

  • Happy new year! I got to start the new decade by being a poop doula for our two year old. 💩 ⠀
⠀
This is just a real-life post to remind you that no matter how beautiful the photos and colors and quotes and brand are, there’s usually just a hard-working mom behind it, with leggings and unwashed hair, trying to help her toddler not be scared as he learns to release his BMs into the toilet. 🚽 ⠀
⠀
We breathed, we squatted, we gripped hands, we sang songs, we laughed, and in the end, he did it. I supposed this is really what doula-ing is all about, right? We walk alongside, but in the end, the goal is that they don’t remember our help but instead remember their achievements. They did it. 💓⠀
