These poses are the first two I learned by accident during my martial arts trainingπŸ₯‹. Don't ask me how I did it because even I don't remember πŸ˜‚. Anywho, I've been practicing yoga on and off for about 5-ish years now. I can still do most of the backbend poses, but not all of them. The arm strengthening poses are difficult, but doable since I don't have full strength in my shoulders yet. Right now, my goal is to master ScorpionπŸ¦‚ Pose & Standing Split Pose since those are my top 2 favorite poses. The purpose for this is to increase my flexibility, as well as lift heavier weightsπŸ‹πŸΎβ€β™€οΈ & have a tighter core. Plus, I think my fighter cosplays βš”οΈ would look dope af with Scorpion Pose & Standing Split Pose.

Finding Stillness in Plough can be quite challenging if trying for the first time.  With the feet on the floor this pose is considered to be intermediate to advanced. Its advisable not to practice this pose without previous experience or perhaps direction from a teacher.
I’ve put a little demo in my story, with the aid of chairs we can find some light relief, also prepares us to see what the sensations will be like free standing...

It might not look much different, and you might even notice that my body is LESS stretched because I have my toes on a block rather than reaching to the floor. My back was super tight this week, so my toes couldn’t quite reach. Sometimes this pose feels really good and I can touch the floor, but sometimes not.

The main difference is my increased abdominal strength, and the way I’m able to stack my hips directly over my shoulders. In the black and white shot my back is rounded, and I’m more concerned about touching the floor than I am with maintaining proper alignment.

So, where have I made the most progress? When I look at the new photo, all I see is how much I’ve dropped my ego. I’ve learned to meet my body where its actually at, rather than where I want it to be. This has been a difficult lesson to learn. Where do you practice this in your own life?

  • In my past I viewed skinny equaling healthy. But, as a perimenopausal woman who eats healthy whole food, moves my body daily, meditates, laughs and has pure joy in her life, I have discovered, that isn’t the case. I’m extremely healthy AND I have a rounder body. No matter how much I have fought this thicker shape, it’s just who I am. Today, this amazing body got into this pose...using the strength in my legs and core (even if it’s bigger than when I was a teenager doing this pose effortlessly). And I’m so proud of myself!! ❀️

  • Do you teach plough pose? I rarely do, which does not mean you have to do the same. I decided not to teach it unless I really know my students well and their abilities because I ended up with back spasms so many times after doing plough pose when I was a student that I do not want any of my students going through the same. .
As long as I can remember I had so many problems with my back, from dislocated vertebrae to really strong back spasms, to pains that lasted for months, and when I started doing yoga it did not get better. It got worse. There were so many poses that were triggers for me, and I would end up with even worse pain after a class.

Eventually it did become better. As my core became stronger and overall mobility and flexibility of my joints increased the pain went away. But it did take YEARS! And I really mean it! Not a year, not 2 years. It took me 5-7 years for it to get better.
.
Now do you get why I rarely do teach plough? I do teach all basic poses that will eventually lead to plough, or will not, but will give the body what is needed without putting extra pressure on the head and neck.

Also when I do teach plough I do tech it as the first option, with the legs on the chair, where the stretch is mostly located in the thoracic spine, and not in the neck.

The regular yoga practices aim to create a crystallized center, inner bliss, and the creation of a beautiful divine soul. Yoga practices include the performance of yoga postures that are not only concerned with the physical body, they very well cover the mental and spiritual health as well. 
I would watch my father do this everyday as a child, and was super amused with how the legs would go all the way behind! 
Again embracing the imperfection of my form and finding joy in the process.
