  • I know it’s hard to choose favorites... but there has to be one country that has a special place in your heart for whatever reason. For me, it’s the #Philippines!! 🇵🇭 (followed closely by 🇵🇰 🇮🇷 🇻🇳 🇳🇱 🇯🇵 🇰🇷 🇱🇧 🇨🇿 🇳🇦 🇹🇯) 😎😎

  • My mom texted to tell me my aunt's beagle had a birthday celebration in the Philippines last night.
.
A few cultural notes:
.
1. "Tita" is Tagalog for aunt. It can be used in terms of relatives but also as a form of respect with close friends of family and extended family members. For example, I refer to my mother's friends as titas, as well as my mother's cousins. The male equivalent is tito.
.
2. In some Asian cultures, long noodles symbolize long, healthy lives and it's considered very unlucky to cut or break a strand. Filipinos in particular like to eat noodles in their birthdays and to celebrate New Year's.
.
3. A "dirty kitchen" isn't an unclean kitchen. It's a separate, usually outdoor kitchen where all the "real" cooking takes place — the aromatic, oil-splattering cooking of day-to-day life. Indoors there's a "fancy kitchen" which is essentially just for show and storage for dishes, cutlery, glassware, etc. There would be appliances in both, though the fancy kitchen appliances would rarely (if ever) be used.
.
4. A "yaya" is a nanny, but unlike in the States yayas often work with their families for longer than just childhood. Sometimes they transition into other roles, like nursemaid for an elderly family member. In some situations, a family might have multiple yayas — a yaya for babies, a yaya for younger children, a yaya for teenagers, and a yaya for grandparents.
