  • This Amish paste tomato is a gorgeous color at this exact moment of ripening. I had pick it off the vine yesterday because it’s starting to crack on the other end. So it’s not quite ready but watching it turn red is a beautiful process. I had no idea they grew this big! 😯

  • Choosing the right soil is one of the most important phases of the cultivation plan. We picked Garden Valley Organics’ ‘Natural and Organic Potting Soil with Wormcastings’ and it was made locally in the Willamette Valley.
Nature has a way of creating just the right soil conditions to enhance amazing root development and vigorous plant growth. Our soil from Rexius contains naturally beneficial ingredients and healthy microbes for a superb growing medium including compost, fish bone meal, ground oyster shell, and other natural derivatives.

  • Well at least a hundred times a year I stand with a handful of seeds thinking 'okay, here we go again.'... What bug, what bad weather, what lack of water, what chicken will destroy you? I ask the seeds and they have no idea of course, they just lie there with all that potential locked away. Sometimes I feel guilty for squandered opportunity,, my mistakes or neglect. Still other things are outside of my control and I must remind myself that for all the times I fail...there are just as many times that I'm pulling in a bounty.
Some armload of something that started out just this way..a handful of seeds, with me all purposeful and pretending that it's a science.. but knowing somewhere that it's really an act of faith, of devotion.
The practice of repeated failures.
Coming back to this place again and again despite setbacks and telling myself a kind thing about my ability to persevere.
So I cast you off... perhaps little maybe someday carrots! Become what you were meant to be! Become great! Become amazing and beautiful!
And I tell myself too. Because in all this folly and madness, it holds true! Be it seed or human spirit, failure is inevitable but giving up is a choice.

  • Day 201 of eating only from my garden 🍓 Today's lunch is ready 🙂. I'll have these berries with some mandarin and passion fruit. Lunch is always a fruit platter. 2 or 3 eggs and lots of greens for breakfast, and a big vegetable soup or stir fry for dinner I snack on peas and beans, nuts and seeds if they're available. Someone asked if I get tired of being in the kitchen prepping and preserving food. The answer to that is no, because I very rarely do it! When I get asked this, it always makes me feel so grateful that I live in a place where food can be grown plentifully all year round. I just pick what I want to eat that day, or I might pick what I want to eat for the following day or two and pop that in the fridge. I only freeze produce if I have too much which isn't often when you're only eating what you grow! I did freeze corn in Summer - I purposely grew more than I could eat at the time so I could enjoy it in winter. I froze some summer fruit for the same reason. Having said that, I may need to freeze some cabbage very soon, but more than likely I'll just eat a lot of cabbage. Love it with tomatoes. I think the only preserves I've made are rosella jam to sell (very time consuming!) and some lime marmalade for gifts, turmeric and ginger powder, and my roasted dandelion root tea! Oh yes, I did make my own salt too.. I'm drying some herbs but only for fun, there's always fresh herbs in the garden.
