  • We have several Jersey cows on our place just for this reason. They make great nurse cows. They will adopt any calf you put under them. Saves me from bottle feeding. We keep them on all the feed and hay they want so their milk production stays high.

  • 4th year in a row that Boschendal Black Angus takes commercial herd of the year in the Western Cape. The foundation that was put down by oom Andre has really made my job as a stock farmer so much easier over the past 5 seasons.

This past calving season we mated 1 month earlier than we normally do and we got 100% of our Angus herd incalf, a first for me..
This is the first year in 3 seasons that we didnt get over 100% calves on the ground ending on a 98.5% and an average ICP of 346 days for the breeding herd.. This one is dedicated to a man that could tell a story like no other, Oom Andre

  • We processed our first set of meat birds this weekend. These are Bresse chickens, a French breed that is known for its high quality meat.

These birds were grown for 16 weeks. Very different from the commercial chickens that are in the grocery stores that are bred to grow large very quickly in only 8 weeks.

Is this something we should start stocking in our store? Feet optional!

  • Just like any new business, we’ve faced our fair share of challenges; but we’ve also accomplished some amazing things I could have never dreamed of at the start of this journey.

We have met so many incredibly supportive people who have been so kind to help Garrett and I along the way. We are grateful beyond words for every opportunity we have to meet our customers, and to share the story behind our beef- from our ranch to your table.

Over the past couple of weeks we have been working with Chef Wyatt to create the burger of the month at a local restaurant, @slantedtree. We’re so proud to share the Five Mile Ranch Burger with our 21 day Dry-Aged beef, smoked gouda, arugula, red onions, and homemade extra virgin garlic aioli.

In other exciting news, we’re also launching our Holiday Beef Boxes today! Stay tuned and check out our stories to learn more about our Holiday Boxes that are available for local pickup and delivery.

  • Chewing cud

Did you know cows chew their food twice? When they take a bite, it goes into the rumen part of their stomach where it's mixed with acid to soften.

Later, it goes back into the mouth to be chewed a second time before heading into different stomach. (Cows have 4 stomachs!) Seeing all the steers laying down and chewing cud is a good thing.

It means they're full. They've got enough good grass to eat, with plenty of protein.

It also means one less day I have to feed hay!! Gives a whole new meaning to the ruminate: think deeply about something

  • At Oyler Family Farms it is important to us that you know where your meat comes from and what it is being fed. Our meats are grown by us- two young married farmers and two little farm girls, living in rural southern Utah. We raise all of our animals from birth to harvest. Our cattle, lamb, goats, and heritage hogs spend their whole lives on green pastures and are fed high quality alfalfa, oats/barley, and barley rations during the winter to sustain their health and provide quality flavored meats. All natural, better than organic, and no hormones or antibiotics added. Our animals are humanely processed at a USDA facility, cut to our specifications, and are traceable back to our farm.
We work hard to raise and care for our herd. Our hope is that you can feel good about buying our product knowing exactly where and how they were raised to feed yourself and your family.
We are proud to raise and share our meat with you! Thank you for your continued support!

  • Where are my beef farmers at? 👋🏼 What is the #1 tip you would give someone just starting out with raising beef cows/calves?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
These little angus calves have seriously won my heart over 😭❤️ I’ve never worked with angus babies until I started working at Oakwood. They breed alotttt of their dairy cows to angus. I will never forget the first time I saw one born, and literally 10 minutes later it was up and sprinting around the maternity pen. I couldn’t believe it 😆 they are crazy.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I asked the top question because I am so curious about the reality of beef farming. I don’t plan on working on a dairy farm after I’m out of college. But I know I will never be content if I don’t work with cows in some way. As of now, I want to start up a beef farm later on. I’ve heard you definitely want to make a niche market out of it (and I would be all over that 🤗) because it’s hard to make money in it otherwise. But what else? Annddd go! 👇🏼

  • Harvest is tomorrow.
...
It’s a more Instagram “nice” way of saying that five of our steers are slaughtered early tomorrow morning.
...
There is a misconception that as ranchers, we don’t feel anything when we take an animal to harvest.
...
Nothing could be more wrong. As ranchers, we practice animal husbandry. We care for these animals their whole life. We feed them, check on them daily, and watch them grow. We do everything we can to protect them from illness and discomfort.
...
We don’t do those things just because it affects our bottom line. We do them because we deeply care about these animals and want to be the best stewards that we can of them while they’re here on earth.
...
Tomorrow, they transition from our care and become nourishment for other families across Iowa.
...
We’ll say a prayer over them and thank God for giving us the gift of stewarding his creation. We’ll pray that they provide nourishment and blessings to other families. And the sacrifice of an animal’s life will affect us. We WILL feel it.
...
