  • San Francisco is a wonderful place. It is full of great restaurants, vibrant neighborhoods, beautiful parks, diversity and love. I may have only lived there for about 9 months but it definitely left a mark on me!
•
This was taken in Dolores Park near where I used to live just next to the Castro District. As a proud gay man myself, I am always profoundly in awe of the work and resilience it took for me to experience the openness I currently do by people that lived and still live in this neighborhood today.
•
The park is a great place to relax, have a picnic, work out a bit, find a great restaurant that surrounds it and just take a moment to yourself or with your friends. Life is hectic! Finding a park like this is so good for your own mental health. It certainly was for me.
•
This park has quite a history though. Before settlement by the Spanish, this area was inhabited by the Yelamu tribe for 4000-6000 years (and the area of San Francisco surrounding the park). Spanish missionaries founded the park in 1776 at the same time that the United States of America was declaring independence. California wouldn’t become a part of the United States for almost 100 years.
•
Because of its large Latino population, in 1966, a replica of the “Mexican Liberty Bell”, was installed in the park and was presented by Mexican president Gustavo Díaz Ordaz. It was placed next to a statue of Miguel Hidalgo, who is referred to as the father of Mexican independence. The original bell which is located in Mexico City was rung in 1810 by Hidalgo in the city of Dolores Hidalgo which is where the park gets its name.

  • Day 10: Auckland to Sydney: After an early wake up I left New Zealand behind for more Sydney adventures. I couldn't sign into my airbnb until 4pm. So I found a place to leave my bag and I took off for a nice wander through the city.
