  • Curbside To-Go:  @jlbeersburnsville is one of the few places I get to visit a few times a year since it is in the south metro and I enjoy their burgers a lot.  Wait, let me rephrase that.  I enjoy their burger a lot. 😉

JL Beers - Burnsville / Not Just A Nutter Burger

Trying another burger on their menu is a new thing for me.  I almost always get the JL Burger with bacon.  I add a third patty a lot of the time as well.  I'll be honest, I was hesitant to not get my go to burger.  The reason I did was because it was #nationalpeanutbutterandjellyday and I thought it would be kind of cool.

I didn't expect their PB & J to be this good.  Every time you order, your peanut butter is fresh ground on the spot.  It did taste very fresh.  It's creamy, but you can still feel a little bit of the ground peanut chunks in it.  Delicious peanut flavor.  Their red pepper jelly is cool and sweet.  Not too sweet though.  The combination is magic.  What adds even more flavor to this are the added diced jalapeños, which add just a little heat.  They give you a nice amount of peanut butter and red pepper jelly, but I like to have the option to get a little crazy with extra sauce, so I did get an extra side of both and I used it all!  A nice amount of pepper jack cheese also adds a little kick.

One fresh Midwestern beef patty, charred and seasoned nicely on their unique grill press.  You won't find many places that use cottage bacon.  Cottage bacon is made from the pig shoulder/butt.  It doesn't have that big strip of fat that regular bacon has, so it's all meat.  Totally works for me.  The nicely toasted, soft bun works.  The top bun might look a little big, but it squished down nicely.  No issues.  I will get this burger again, but it will be after a few more JL Burgers!

  • We all want to do everything we can to help small businesses/restaurants get through this incredible tough time.  The reality is, we can't single handedly hit every place ourselves.  I've been asked, where do we start?  We start with the ones we know and love on a personal level.  We start with the ones we think need the most help.  We start with the ones who might not be as popular as others or get the most attention.  I could go on, but we all have our own places we want to help, and collectively, we can have a huge impact around the Twin Cities and around our great state!  From what I’ve seen, so many of us are doing all that we can.

Harry's - Lakeville / Bacon Cheddar Burger (Curbside Pick Up)

Harry’s offers no contact, curbside pick up or door dash delivery.  Their to go menu changes frequently and they have daily specials as well as family style meals in big portions.  Check their website or their IG page for all of the details.

The Bacon Cheddar Burger starts with a 1/2 pound, fresh, local beef patty, char grilled close to my temp and seasoned enough.  It had some juiciness to it.  Cheddar can be a challenge to get melted correctly, but no issues here.  It was melted nicely.  I got three strips of thicker cut bacon.  Lettuce, tomato and onion are provided on the side as well as a few sliced pickles, which I threw on top.  One slight issue the last time I visited was that the bun was more dominant than I would have liked.  There has been a bun change and it is a good one.  It’s smaller and softer, lightly toasted and much better.  I enjoyed it.

Harry’s Scratch Kitchen has been in Lakeville 20 years.  If you live in the south metro, this would be a great time to stop by.  If you live farther away, it's not that far. 😉

  • #TCBurgerNight takes us all over the Twin Cities showcasing Burgers from Fine Dining establishments to local neighborhood bars and restaurants.  This is a first tonight.  We are doing curbside pickup in a parking lot.  But, you know what?  Out of the 76 that @phatphood, @shawnsrodgers & I have done, this one might be the most important!

Sandy's Tavern - Richfield / World Famous Sandy's Olive Burger (Double)

It's more important that ever to take care of yourself, your family and your local businesses/restaurants.  Think of what they mean to us and what they've done for us.  It's payback time.  They need us!

Sandy's is old school goodness.  @daddyomattyo stepped in and bought Sandy's a few months ago.  He's doing his best to keep its legacy alive.  Their World Famous Sandy's Olive Burger is not something you would easily find out in the burger world.  The beef patties are a special Sandy's blend from @swanson_meats.  These two, fresh 1/4 pound patties, charred nicely on the flattop grill, are seasoned and juicy enough for your liking.  A slice of melted American cheese tops each patty.  Sour cream is slathered on the top bun and a bunch of green olives are stuck in the sour cream.  There is no shortage of green olives.  They also give you quite a few sliced pickles to add, which I did.  As you may have guessed, it's better if you like green olives.  I love green olives.  I liked the flavor of them with the sour cream.  The bun was soft, lightly toasted and good.  I'm giving it a thumbs up. 👍

Curbside pickup is currently available every day from Noon until 7:00pm.  Order online, pull into their parking lot and call them and tell them you are there.  We got our food at the selected time and enjoyed our meals in our cars, in the parking lot, with correct social distancing.  It was good to see the guys and keep trying to do our part.   • A few days ago, I wasn't sure where and when my next Burger post would be.  I wanted to make sure I was being sensitive and responsible to what is going on around us and doing what I am supposed to be doing to limit the spread of the COVID-19 virus.  The muddy restaurant picture has cleared up enough to let us know how we can help.  That being said, Burgers are still out there and Burgers still need to be enjoyed!

Celts Craft House - Apple Valley / Mushroom Burger (Curbside Pick-Up)

I've seen so many posts and stories of people supporting local businesses/restaurants.  Many of you have been to multiple places already.  You rock!  There is information out there detailing how we can support each place.  We all have our favorite local restaurants we hope will come out of this ok.  My favorite local place, as you know, is @celtscrafthouse.  They will be doing Curbside To-Go, every day of the week from 4-8pm.  Call them, place your order, pay and tip with your credit card.  You can use cash if needed, but it's safer for a credit card payment.  They will tell you where to park and give you a time it will be ready.  Park, roll down your window and they will hand you the goods.  Easy!  This procedure is going on at most restaurants.  A lot of places are offering delivery as well.  Pay attention to all of the great posts and stories on what all of these different restaurants are doing.

Oh, I almost forgot, the Mushroom Burger.  I've had it a few times, I love it!  Al's delicious, signature Bacon Cheddar Sauce with sautéed Cremini Mushrooms, is poured over their perfectly seasoned, juicy, 1/2 pound, chuck and short rib beef patty.  Their lightly toasted, @dennysfifthavebakery bun is fantastic as well.

We need to take care of and do what's best for ourselves and our families.  We also need to help our small, local businesses/restaurants survive this very difficult time.  I'll be doing as much as I can.  I know you will too!

  • The Treasure Island Center has brought excitement to downtown St. Paul.  Housing the Minnesota Wild’s practice facility and offering ice time to different college, youth and adult leagues.  Currently, there is a drug store, a coffee shop, a brewery, and soon, a pizza place.  As of a week ago, there’s a new sports bar called @thepillboxtavern.  The best way I know to thoroughly check out the burger options, is to call a 75th #TCBurgerNight with @phatphood & @shawnsrodgers.

The Pillbox Tavern - St. Paul / The Tillamook Burger

This is a sweet place to watch sporting events, hang out with friends and family and enjoy great food and great drinks.  As it should be, Burgers lead the way. 😉  They have three regular burgers and three Juicy Lucy’s, including the Jalapeño Popper Lucy, the 2019 @tcburgerbattle champion, that owner Bill Ashton brought over from @jerseysbar.  Check out Shawn’s post detailing that burger.

What I’ve got is The Tillamook Burger.  This one starts with 6 ounces of brisket, short rib & dry aged chuck, with a little butter thrown in for good measure from Rancher’s Legacy Meat Company in Vadnais Heights.  It’s cooked to temp.  It’s juicy, seasoned well and has a nice char on the patty.  Very tasty caramelized onions are generously dolloped on.  White, aged Tillamook cheddar covers the onions.  It’s beautifully melted, thick and drips down the side of the burger.

A creamy Dijon mustard is spread on top.  You will notice the mustard taste.  Under the patty are a few delicious, sliced pickles.  The soft, lightly toasted bun from @grandmasbakerywbl is great.  You hear me say it a lot, but this burger lands in the nice, soft feel category.  If feels good in my hands.  It's time for a stop in the capital city!  You'll enjoy this burger.

  • Congratulations to Mahtomedi High School on their first Minnesota State Boys High School Hockey Championship!  I've got an idea where Mahtomedi's favorite son, @tommyolson5858, @tommystastes58, former  @gopherfootball star & current @kfan1003 Power Trip Contributor, might have celebrated.

The Wildwood Tavern - Mahtomedi / Tavern Burger

A great place to kick back, relax, have a drink and some great scratch-made food.  There were so many things on the menu I wanted to try, like their wings, grilled cheese, poutine, the pork belly blt and the beer braised short ribs.  I also wanted a burger, and their signature Tavern Burger seemed like a great choice.

The hand-crafted beef patty is flame broiled, hit my temp, was seasoned ok and was pretty juicy.  American cheese is the choice.  Melt it a little more for me, please.  Under the patty, you get a tomato slice and some chopped lettuce, which is bathing in their delicious wildwood sauce.  There is some of that sauce on top of the burger, but I added a little more.  The pickles are great.  The bun is soft, lightly toasted and very good.  It has that little crunchy ring around it.  Get a side of the wildwood sauce for their house cut fries.  Check out their house made tater tots too.  If you make your own tots, I'm ordering tots!  Their loaded Brussels sprouts are a very popular item as well.

A Colby Jack Cheddar Cheese blend is melted over the chili.  A few sliced jalapeños give it a little kick and some chopped red onions are sprinkled on top.  The Denny's 5th Ave. Bakery Bun is fantastic as always.  I love chili in the wintertime, and this BOM satisfies my craving!

If you're like me, time was spent at @billysongrandave during the many, many years I attended Grand Old Day.  A large patio and so many seats inside, it was always packed with people.  With a new owner comes changes.  There will be decor changes as you might expect, but there is also a new executive Chef brought in to shake the menu up a bit.  Chef Jeremy Bechtold, @thenorthwoodstable has a relatively small menu you'll be able to work your way through.

What is a Hangover Burger?  Basically it's a breakfast burger with some hearty ingredients and possibly something spicy.  After a long night out, you might be a little dehydrated or super hungry or need to get woken up a little or need something to soak up that excess alcohol left in your system.  This burger will take care of everything!

This one is a 1/4 pound, double patty, chuck, brisket and short rib blend.  The char broiled beef has a softness to it I have never really seen.  It melts in your mouth.  American cheese tops each patty.  There are a few pickled jalapeños adding a nice little kick and some pickled red onions.  A couple strips of nicely cooked bacon are added.  The next ingredient is killer.  Duck sausage gravy is poured over the top.  It's salty and delicious.  It's finished off with a sunnyside up egg, which provides plenty of yolk.  The lightly grilled brioche bun is super soft and buttery.  Some of you may choose to tackle it with a knife and fork.  Not me!  I dove in with both hands!

Last year, I reviewed two places that want a piece of that Rochester Burger Pie.  I’ve got a third contender to that throne.  @fatwillysburgersmn has a super cool garage theme going on.  The lineup features burgers such as the Edsel, the Mustang and the El Camino.  The Super Bee caught my eye.

Pure and simple, the Super Bee is the Ultimate Bacon Cheeseburger.  7ounces of a special Angus beef and bacon blend patty from @yeoldebutchershoppe.  You will see the chunks of bacon blended in.  They put a super char on it, season it well and it’s juicy.  You can pick your cheese.  American, beautifully melted, please.  You want bacon, perfectly cooked and plentiful?  You got it.  Now I need a soft and lightly toasted bun.  Check!  This is a damn good bacon cheeseburger.  I thought it could be even better with some sautéed onions.  I was right.  Delicious!  If you are looking for some sauces.  Their sriracha and chipotle mayos are money!  Pickles are on the side.  If you are planning a Rochester Burger Crawl, put Fat Willy’s on your list!

  • Travel Post:  In asking for restaurant recommendations in the Daytona Beach area, Aunt Catfish’s was mentioned a few times.  When we arrived, the wait was long, which usually a good sign.  Located on the shore of the Halifax River, which is basically a thin strip of land away from the ocean, we not only were here because of the recommendations, but we had also booked a boat tour a couple of days later and wanted to check it out.  We’re glad we did.  It’s a hoppin’ place.

Aunt Catfish’s On the River - Port Orange, FL - Big River Burger

What brings the people in?  Good southern, seafood cooking, with a large menu to fill in any gaps.  All kinds of seafood, including, yes, catfish.  Their famous cinnamon rolls melt in your mouth.  With most orders you get hush puppies one of those incredible cinnamon rolls.  You might think a burger would get forgotten here.  Not a chance.  They’ve got a few burgers on the lunch menu and a couple of those on the dinner menu, which includes a Gator Burger.  I thought about it, but couldn’t bring myself to get one.  I picked their Big River Burger.  A 1/2 pound, fresh hand pattied Angus beef patty from the local, Gaff’s Quality Meat Market.  This is pretty much a plain burger, so I added American cheese, caramelized onions, pickles and campfire sauce.  They use a toasted kaiser roll, which is just a little different from the norm.

The beef patty is thick and very juicy.  They threw on two slices of cheese.  The caramelized onions did their thing.  The campfire sauce was pretty darn good.  The toasted Kaiser roll was a little over toasted.  I would come back for this burger and a few other fresh seafood items.  It was Daytona 500 weekend and Mike Joy was in the restaurant.  He is the Fox Sports lap by lap voice of NASCAR.  He is fantastic to listen to. .
If you are ever in Daytona Beach, I'd make this one of your stops.  I loved Aunt Catfish's!

  • If you’ve followed me for a while, I think you could guess my go to burger.  Well seasoned beef patty, juicy and pink.  American cheese, grilled onions, pickles and some special sauce on a soft, lightly toasted bun.  As my luck would have it, I just told you about my latest burger experience in the north metro.

Oliver’s - Shoreview / The Oliver Burger

@olivers_mn is the latest addition to the Elevage Restaurant family.  It's located in "The McMillan" apartment/townhouse complex.  It has modern decor, a ton of natural lighting and a comfortable feel to it.  When you walk in, you’ll see their coffee bar area first.  Keep walking a few more steps and you’ll see the restaurant area.  Let’s get to the TC Burger Blog Burger, oh, I mean The Oliver Burger.  A 6oz. house-blend of chuck, sirloin and brisket from Ranchers Legacy Meat Company in Vadnais Heights.  It’s seasoned well, cooked to my pink temp and juicy.  American cheese melted beautifully, of course.  Perfectly grilled onions on top.  They give you plenty of onions.  Quite a few very tasty pickle slices below the patty and a satisfactory amount of delicious special sauce, which you’ll want to get an extra side of for their very good smoked-salt rosemary fries.  When you first see the burger, you'll notice the beautiful, golden, buttery looking bun.  This egg bun from Hilltop Hearth is all that and more.  It has that soft feel, it's buttery, it's lightly toasted and becomes one with the rest of the burger.  A great bun!

There are numerous websites to assist you, but who just might be your best resource?  The locals.  We talked to a few locals about where to get a good burger in Daytona Beach.  They sent us packing!

Airport Restaurant & Gin Mill - DeLand / Port Burger

They sent us 20 miles southwest of Daytona Beach to DeLand Municipal Airport.  Located just outside the airport, you can watch planes take off and land, from your table.  You can even see skydivers jump out of perfectly good airplanes.  They've got a great outdoor patio and bar.  The burger, a 1/2 pound, Angus beef patty.  Charred nicely, seasoned pretty well and had some juiciness to it.  I chose White American cheese.  I added bacon, a couple strips, perfectly cooked.  A couple slices of fresh tomatoes, a thicker slice of red onion and a thin leaf of lettuce sit below the patty.  A good, toasted bun holds it all in nicely.  It’s a good burger.  We got some of their delicious tiger sauce for our fries.  I’d get an extra side and spread some on the burger to make it even better.

It’s a quick drive from the beach and a very cool spot for a burger, a cold beverage and some interesting things to watch.

Owners Shannon & Roger Burks have a cool spot in Excelsior and are serving up Southern classics and putting their own spin on some as well.  Things like Southern Fried Chicken, Chicken & Waffles, Fried Green Tomatoes, Collard Greens, Cheese Grits and they even have a Kentucky Hot Brown on the menu.  Bourbon?  You can get your fix here.  A great list of bourbon, whiskey and scotch on the drink menu.  Southern food and bourbon?  What's going on here?  Roger grew up in Kentucky.  I get it now.

There are two burgers currently on the menu, but there will be a few more added soon, due to the popularity these two have had.  I’m having the Great Southern Burger.  The beef is a blend of chuck, brisket & short rib.  It's a loose patty, which I always like.  It has a nice char on it.  It is seasoned decently, though I often want more.  They nailed my temp as well.  What gives this burger it's Southern twist is the pimento cheese.  You don't see it much up North, but it's everywhere down South.  Pimento cheese is considered more of a spread type cheese creation.  But on a burger?  Yes, totally works.  I had a ton of it spread on.  I was talking with our server, Nikki, about the menu, and told her I had seen a couple of pictures, but didn't see a lot of pimento cheese on the patty.  She gave away their secret, which I'm giving to you.  There is an onion ring on top of the patty and the pimento cheese is put in the circle of that onion ring.  When you take a bite, and channel your inner mouse, you'll find the cheese.

Burgers of all kinds should be celebrated.  From the simple, meat, cheese and bun, to burgers with lettuce, tomatoes and onions, to the outside the box burgers, topped with mac & cheese, pulled pork or maybe corned beef and sauerkraut.  This burger is going to take you to a whole new place, and you are going to love it!

Wendy’s House of Soul - Minneapolis / Mogul Burger
.
Multiple spices, which includes Wendy’s SOULseasoning, are mixed in with the beef.  The two 1/4 pound patties are formed Juicy Lucy style and filled with American, pepper jack and Swiss cheeses, along with chopped onions and green peppers.  The beef is par-cooked, turkey bacon and more cheese gets added.  Why is the beef par-cooked?  Because the beef patties are not going into a soft, lightly toasted bun.  They will go into in a gluten-free wrap and then deep fried!  We are now outside the burger box.

I’ve described it, but did I like it?  Nope.  I Loved it!  It’s cut in half, so right away you see the onions and peppers bathing in all that cheese, just waiting to burst out at first bite.  The wrap gives you some crunch.  The delicious cheese oozes out covering your tongue with deliciousness.  The onions and peppers are still a little crunchy.   • I'm a few days late getting out to Celts Craft House for Chef Al's February Burger of the Month.  Lucky for us, it's Leap Year, and that means an extra day to get out here and have yet another one of Al's fantastic burger creations.

Celts Craft House - Apple Valley / Tex Mex Burger (February BOM)

I know, I keep giving you the same old reviews of Al's BOM's.  Fantastic, Amazing and Incredible.  The truth is, if anything, it's a little tougher for Al to get my highest ratings because it is my favorite local go to place.  But, in the end, I have to give you my honest opinion of my burger experience.

This month, I've got a Tex Mex style burger to tell you about.  The incredible flavors put this burger in the upper class.  The 1/2 pound chuck, brisket & short rib blend hits my temp and is super juicy.  The patty is grilled, and when it's flipped, a wet chipotle paste is spread on.  This delicious chipotle concoction is more than enough seasoning for the beef.

Sautéed onions, red peppers and green peppers are heaped on top of the patty, and beautifully melted pepper jack cheese blankets all of it.  Fire roasted green chile's are sprinkled all over the top.  The pepper jack cheese and the chipotle rub give this burger a nice little bite.  Adding more flavor is Al's new lime, cilantro aioli that is generously spread on top of the perfectly toasted, Denny's 5th Ave. Bakery bun.  With Al's burgers, I never have to say, "if you're going to give me some sauce, then give me some damn sauce!". The combination of all these different flavors will have your taste buds tingling.  This burger is fantastic!

One thing it means is you may have a tough time pronouncing some of the menu items as well as knowing what the heck it's going to taste like.  But, I'll make it a little easier for you and say that you only need to know two words.  Really Good!  Oh, make that four words.  Fantastic Burger!

If you are planning to try a few other menu items besides the Burger, they have good descriptions and your server will do a great job of explaining what it is, and how delicious it will be.

Let's get to this burger.  The two thin patties are smashed and given a super char.  They were seasoned well.  They were slightly non-uniform, but no problem.  I didn't really get any pink, but they were juicy.  The cheese is amazing.  White American, melted perfectly, plentiful and oozing down the sides of the burger.

Topping that cheese are a couple of unique Spanish sauces.  Piperade, a mix of onions, peppers and tomatoes along with Romesco, consisting of tomatoes, garlic, roasted red peppers, almonds and more.  It adds delicious flavor to the burger.  There is a bit of tomato flavor you will notice.  Some tasty, tangy Duke's mayo is spread on as well.  The bun is soft and perfectly toasted.  This burger is another one that has the soft feel in your hand.  I think you will want to experience this fantastic burger!

  • It's been a year since I've been to @jellybeanjulias, and I've been looking forward to getting back very much.  This time I brought some friends you may remember, @phatphood & @shawnsrodgers and we'll call this the first #TCBurgerNight of the new decade!

Jellybean & Julia's - Anoka / Bacon Jam & Cheddar Burger

I've been talking a lot about new menus and new burgers.  I've got both for you.  Owners Cory & Koli have a small, 30 or so, seat restaurant in the Anoka Shopping Center strip mall.  This is the kind of place you want to find and support.  Owners that are passionate about what they do and care so much about the food they create.

I've got a new burger that started as a special a month ago, but is headed for the permanent menu, and for good reason.  What you will be remembering and telling people about this burger will be summed up in two words.  Bacon Jam!  If you don't already love bacon jam, there's no question in my mind that you will after devouring this burger.  The bacon jam is pure sweet, savory, sticky goodness.  The incredible flavor was still with me hours later.  It's not subtle, it's in your face incredible!  The 1/3 pound Angus beef patty was juicy, had a good char and was seasoned nicely.  The smokey cheddar was melted beautifully.  Delicious garlic mayo is slathered on the bottom of the soft, lightly toasted bun.  I made this a double patty, but it really didn't feel like too much beef.  This is a sweet, sticky, delicious burger!

Other new menu items are the Jalapeño Popper Burger, Potato Salad and the Peach Pig Burger.  Their breakfast features some very unique and creative items such as Cheese Hash & Gravy Waffles, Chicken Wing Waffles & Rib Waffles

  • South St. Paul, historically known for having the worlds largest stockyard at one point, during its 122 year run.  The last cattle sale was back in 2008.  It was also known for having the largest meatpackjng plant in the world.  I think it's a fitting place to have a burger.

Kaposia Club - South St. Paul - The Big Mick

The @kaposiaclubssp pays homage to South St. Paul's historical roots.  Their menu has burgers called the Cowtown Classic and the Stockyard's Burger.  You can also start your day with their Cattleman's Breakfast.  I'm having their most popular burger, which as you might imagine, is their version of the Big Mac.

Two juicy 1/4 pound beef patties cooked to a perfect medium.  They have a nice char on them.  The loose patties were a little non-uniform, so they kind of slid around.  Not something I couldn't handle though. I wanted a lot more seasoning on the beef.  A bunch of thicker cut pickles totally satisfied me.  The thousand island sauce was plentiful and tasty, and coated the perfect amount of crispy, shredded lettuce on the bottom bun.  American cheese, of course!

The only things missing were some onions and the sesame seed bun.  I'll take the onions, but the bun was perfect!
.
This was a good take on the Big Mac!  I think you'll enjoy it.  I have my eye on their Stockyard's Burger for my next visit!

The Tilted Tiki - Stillwater / Luau Burger

I said at the beginning of the year, let's all keep our eyes and ears open for new menus and new burgers being unveiled.  I’ve got some new stuff and some old stuff for you.  I’m going to focus on the Luau Burger, but in this post, I will cover ALL of their very good burgers!

The Luau burger has been The Tilted Tiki’s entry in Stillwater's Best Burger in the Valley contest the last two years.  It’s very popular for good reason.  The 6oz. Angus chuck & sirloin blend is seasoned with their special dry rub, it has a great char and was pretty juicy.  Cheddar and pepperjack cheeses are melted on top.  There are some nicely cooked fried onions and chopped bacon.  I love places that chop bacon for their burgers.  You get bacon in every bite.  They add a generous mound of their tender and juicy, house made bbq pork.  Habanero aioli is drizzled on top and gives it a little bite.  The @franklinstreetbakery bun is soft and lightly toasted.  You will like all of the flavors the Luau Burger gives you.

Sweet ‘n Sassy Burger - This is the new burger created for the new menu.  The sautéed onions, which are sautéed in pineapple juice stood out to me, along with the delicious, sweet bbq sauce.  It has some of their chopped bacon and cheddar and pepperjack cheeses.

Elvis Burger - This burger was created specifically for this years Burger contest.  You won't see it on the menu yet, but it's always available.  The peanut butter will hit you right away.  Brie cheese, bum bum rum vinaigrette and organic grape jelly are a great combination.  You do get a little runny yolk from the egg.
.
Tropical Pineapple Cheeseburger - This is @thetiltedtiki original burger and owner Chris Goetzke’s old standby.  The beef patty is topped with bacon, cheddar cheese, pina colada sauce and grilled pineapple.  The grilled pineapple gives it a nice, sweet, tart flavor, but doesn’t take over.

    Tropical Pineapple Cheeseburger - This is @thetiltedtiki original burger and owner Chris Goetzke’s old standby. The beef patty is topped with bacon, cheddar cheese, pina colada sauce and grilled pineapple. The grilled pineapple gives it a nice, sweet, tart flavor, but doesn’t take over.

  • I was feeling like some Mexican food.  You might be thinking tacos and burritos.  Not me.  I’m thinking hamburgers and hot dogs.  But that’s not Mexican food?  Oh, how wrong you are!

If you told me I could get my Mexican fix and still have a burger, I would have said you were crazy or that a Mexican place trying to make a good burger has disaster written all over it.  Well, not only can you find burgers in northern Mexico, they are muy bueno!  I was looking through their menu and thinking, I don’t really want this ingredient on my burger, I wonder if I could get this instead of this, etc.. Then I quickly came to my senses and reminded myself to enjoy the experience exactly as it was meant to be enjoyed.

The patty is a deceiving half pound, because it is on the thinner side, but it is a wide patty.  You can get it as a double, but make sure you know, that’s a pound of beef.  It’s seasoned well and juicy enough.  There are a lot of things thrown on this baby.  A slice of mozzarella cheese, topped with a thin slice of ham and then topped with a slice of cheddar cheese.  A couple slices of tomatoes, some raw onions, tasty pickle peppers, slices of avocado, and some nicely cooked bacon.  There is a lot of shredded lettuce on the bottom bun and they put ketchup and mustard on the top of the sesame seed bun.  That’s a mouthful in more ways than one.

I would like to see the cheese melted and a lot less shredded lettuce, but it is a good burger that will satisfy your appetite.  So, the next time someone asks if you want to go out for Mexican food, you can say, yes, I feel like a burger! 😉

  • I thought it might be kind of fun to give you some insight into what I think about on a daily basis.  I know what you are thinking and you are correct.  Burgers!  I think about these six burgers that I have only had once, but made an impression on me that sticks in my head.  I want to experience these burgers again in 2020!

Perfect Burger at @willardsmn .
This was the burger that started it all for me and is my #1 Burger in Minnesota!  Juicy beef, perfectly melted cheese, delicious bacon, tasty Dijon aioli, fantastic icebox pickles on a great bun.

I was in Oklahoma where the Oklahoma-style Onion Burger was created and I fell in love with them.  Chef Eli Renn is the only one who is making this style of burger and he's knocking it out of the park.  Thin shaved onions smashed into the patty and grilled with the beef.

This is basically an opened faced hot dish burger on top of Texas toast.  The patty is topped with hash browns, onions, mushrooms, cheese and delicious brown gravy poured over everything.  This was so much fun to eat!

  • One of the things I've learned on my Burger journey, is that you can find good burgers in any type of restaurant, bar, cafe, bakery, etc.. One thing I can't say is that I've had a really good burger at a wing place.  Yes, you guessed it, until now!  Let's talk wings first.  One thing you don't know is that I sold chicken wings at festivals for a couple of years, long before I started my Burger Blog, so wings are near and dear to my heart.  The wings were fantastic!  The Burger was really good.

D-Spot - Oakdale / Emma James Burger

I have known about this place for a few years and finally got the chance to experience it.  They have quite a few burgers on the menu, but the one getting the most attention has been the Emma James Burger.  It’s very satisfying.  I made no changes to this one.  The 1/3 pound patty was seasoned well and pretty juicy.  I asked if the fried egg was ever ordered over easy, since I love some yolk when an egg is on a burger.  She said, not really, so I went with it.  I was pleasantly surprised when I picked the burger up and some yolk came out of it.

Delicious smoked pancetta layered below the patty adds the bacony flavor.  There is also a good amount of tasty harissa aioli swiped on the bottom bun.  This burger does not come with cheese, but you can add it.  I think cheese would make it even better.  The bun is soft, lightly toasted and good.  I enjoyed it.  I will be back for more wings and burgers and I will recommend @d_spot_wings for both.

  • A couple of months ago I was at a pizza joint in Robbinsdale, enjoying a good burger.  Last night I was at a Costa Rican restaurant located in that pizza joints former home, a block away, having a good burger.

I have read a couple of articles heaping praise on @marnaseaterylounge and their burger.  As you can imagine, expectations were high.  Well, this burger definitely provides flavors you probably have not seen on many burgers around here.  It's unique and it's certainly very good!  The story goes, Chef Diaz came up with the burger while interviewing for a Chef's position over 10 years ago.  He was caught off guard and had to quickly throw some ingredients together for a burger.  They loved the burger and he got the job.

Here's what you need to know.  The beef is, what they say, infused with Chipotle.  This smoky, spicy, juicy, super flavorful single patty is the star of this show.  The patty also has a great char on it, and I was able to get it cooked to a medium temp.  The juices were dripping onto my plate.  Swiss cheese blankets the beef.  Caramelized onions cooked just the way I like them and a couple of, thicker cut bacon strips, satisfy my salty, savory need.  The last two components may surprise and confuse you, but don't let them scare you.  It is topped with a slice of grilled pineapple.  Our slices only covered half the burger, but I did pay attention to every bite I did get with it and its sweet and tart flavor certainly didn't overpower the rest of the burger.  There is also a creamy curry sauce swiped on the bottom bun.  It was delicious.  I would have liked a lot more of that curry sauce.  The brioche bun was soft, toasted nicely and also had some thick grill marks on the top bun.  It was a very nice bun.

If some of these components confuse you, you are not alone.  One thing I can say with certainty, is that you will have a reaction to this burger.  I want to hear it.  I think it will be a good one.

  • I have three favorite foods.  Burgers, of course, Pizza and Wings.  As far as drinks go, I'm a beer guy.  Show me a place that prioritizes those four things, and also champions my local Minnesota sports teams, and I'll keep coming back.  Especially, when it's located in the south metro.

It's funny, but what I am thinking about after stopping into @northerntapmn is how cool I thought it was, how big their booths were and how much I loved their giant, cube sized, beer-battered, aged cheddar filled, signature cheese curds.  As it turns out, I've had cheese curds like these twice before, and both were restaurants owned by the Letnes Restaurant Group.  These curds are fantastic!

Let's talk burger.  I wanted to keep it simple so I ordered The Cheeseburger.  Two 3 oz., Hereford beef patties, cooked to a medium well temp.  They did have a good char on them and were juicy enough for me.  I would have liked more seasoning though.  American cheese is always a great choice.  They throw on a few thick sliced pickles on the bottom bun and give you some of their pretty tasty house burger sauce.  More would have been even better.  Get some more on the side and some of their sriracha aioli to dip your fries into.  The bun, from Mainstreet Bakery was lightly toasted and very good.  Being an onion lover, I like grilled onions on my burger.  I opted to try their Worcestershire red onions.  They may have been too generous with them.  The red onion bite may have took over a little bit.  They were good, but I will leave those off next time or ask for just a few.  I would like to see a regular white or yellow grilled onion option on the menu.  They do have a build your own burger option, which I always love.

  • We’ve reached a new decade and we’ve also reached a 23rd Burger of the Month from Chef Al at Celts Craft House.

Celts Craft House - Apple Valley / Asian Mushroom Burger (January BOM)

I can tell you one thing about Al.  He’s had a smile on his face for 23 straight months.  He lights up when we talk about his BOM’s and he loves the reactions he gets from us after devouring them.  What amazes me is the different seasoning and flavor combinations he comes up with each month.  If you like mushrooms and Asian flavors, you will love this burger!

Al never skimps on anything.  You get a ton of mushrooms piled on top.  The flavors coming from sautéed crimini, shiitake and oyster mushrooms.  Now, there are two things I want on my beef patty.  I want melted cheese and I want the patty salted.  Al doesn’t give me either of those.  Trouble, right?  Nope!  There is no seasoning until a glaze of hoisin sauce, soy sauce, ginger and toasted sesame oil is brushed on the beef patty.  There is my salty taste.  The chuck, brisket and short rib beef blend was perfectly cooked and juicy.  Toasted sesame seeds and diced scallions are sprinkled on top.  The lightly toasted, Denny’s 5th Ave. Bakery bun is one of my favorites.  You don’t think of cheese in Asian cooking, so I’m just fine without it.  This is a burger where cheese does not belong.  Did I just say that?

I think the Burger is already the most talked about single food item around here, and all of us do a great job posting Burgers, but I would like us to be even more "Burger Aware" this year. Keep your eyes and ears open for new Burgers coming out. Restaurants, if you have a new Burger coming out, get a foodie out there to help get the word out. It does make a difference. A new Burger should be a big deal. Let's make them even bigger in 2020!

Falls Landing - Cannon Falls / Cheeseburger

@fallslanding, the centerpiece of this food hall, offers supper club type food as well as what you might get out hunting and fishing.  Things like walleye, perch, duck, and a couple of delicious steaks.  What other option do you want besides fish and steak?  You got it, a Cheeseburger.  This burger gives you the standard lettuce, tomato and onion additions.  The lettuce is chopped and the onions are raw and red.  There is also the not so standard, Colby cheese, which was melted nicely and gives you a different cheese option than what you normally find on your burgers.

The beef was juicy and had an incredible thick char on it.  The menu says the bun is a Kaiser roll, but mine was just a simple, soft, lightly toasted regular burger bun from @hanischbakery.  It was good.  You get some delicious pub sauce on the side.  I poured some on my burger and used the rest to dip the crinkle cut fries.  When you first see the burger, it does look small.  The patty is pretty thick though.  I would not plan on sharing the burger.  The smoked ribeye was delicious and the chocolate brownie/cake dessert with ice cream and whipped cream was fantastic!

I visit southeastern Minnesota quite often, so I’m planning on stopping in again soon.  This food hall also has a pub called @olysroadhouse, serving brick-oven pizzas, craft beer and a “curd burger”. I just might have to check that out.  Tag me if you do.

  • Unfortunately, my duties as a Burger Blogger do not allow me to get back to places where I've had good burgers very often.  Case in point, the last time I stopped into this Irish Pub was right after they had won the 2017 @tcburgerbattle.  They have a 5 star burger in the Big Stag Burger, but I'm checking out the other burger on their menu.

McKinney Roe - Minneapolis / All American Burger

@mckinneyroe is a great place to stop if you are down by US Bank Stadium on the Eastside area of Minneapolis.  This burger could not get any more simpler than it is.  It's basically meat and bun.  It's really good meat and a really good bun!  You are going to want to complete it by adding cheese.  The 1/2 pound angus beef patty is juicy, seasoned pretty well and I got it pink.  The egg bun is soft and delicious.  I added white American cheese, and it's creamy and delicious.  I asked for pickles, but got a pickle spear.  Make sure you specify sliced pickles.  You can make it Cali style if you like as well.  This is another one of those burgers that has a nice, soft feel to it.  It's a very good burger!

The All American Burger is on the Lunch menu.  You can get it before Vikings games too.

  • I love a good bakery as much as anyone.  I grew up in a small town with a great local bakery.  I just loved their glazed donuts and they had the best hamburger and hot dog buns around.  What I love even more is when a bakery adds cafe food and that food is really good!

Patrick's Bakery and Cafe - Richfield / Cheese Burger

I basically took a flyer on this one.  What caught my eye was their extensive menu, which includes, burgers, sandwiches, many different kinds of meat and fish, as well as being a full service bakery.  This cafe is more like a restaurant.  I went with the classic Cheese Burger and added a couple things.  The half-pound, 100% angus beef patty, did not hit my desired temp, but was juicy and seasoned enough to pass.  What did stand out was the fantastic, soft, airy, brioche bun and the super creamy, white American cheese.  I added some sweet, tasty, thick cut caramelized onions.  I also added some flavorful bistro sauce.  There are a couple slices of tomato, and on the bottom bun, there is some fresh, crunchy chopped lettuce.

This burger is certainly good enough that I will order it again.  Aside from their traditional burger lineup, they have a few, what they call, "Patou Burgers". I believe Patou is a French nickname for Patrick's.  These burgers are served on their fresh baked baguette bread.

Don't forget to pick up some pastries or baked goods before you leave!

The first thing you can't help but notice when you grab this burger for your first bite, is how soft and bouncy it is.  The egg bun from Hilltop Hearth is lightly toasted and feels so good in my hands.

Now, what I am about to tell you makes me extremely happy.  If you follow me, you know my main burger disappointment is lack of seasoning on the beef patty.  I am a firm believer in liberally seasoning the beef with salt.  It flavors the meat and also helps to create that great crust we look for as we cook the patty.  When I took my first bite, I knew it was my night.  My tastebuds were doing the happy dance, as the delicious, salty beef hit my tongue.  Oh, it wasn't overly salted, it was perfectly salted!  Thank you, Chef Tyler!  The 6oz. @stockyards 100% angus beef blend of chuck, brisket & sirloin, was juicy and perfectly cooked to my desired pink temp.

Smoked cheddar is their choice of cheese.  Delicious, sweet & savory bacon jam is spread on the top bun.  On the bottom bun they add a couple thin slices of tomatoes, a leaf of lettuce and some super tasty special sauce that will ooze out from below the patty.  There are also a few slices of pickled jalapeños.  Don't be afraid of the heat, it's just a little kick.  I really enjoyed this burger.  I can't wait to get back and build one exactly the way I want it.  By having great beef and a great bun, any one of their burgers are going to be great.  Wednesday nights could be fun making your own Juicy Lucy.  I definitely think a stop will be worth your time!  More on my website!

Snuffy's Malt Shop - Bloomington / The Big Mike

I was at the original Snuffy's Malt Shop in St. Paul back in 2017.  The original location closed back in July of this year, but they do still have three locations you can visit.  I'm at their Bloomington restaurant, which is their most recent expansion, and that opened up in March.  It's retro, but modern retro.  You'll recognize their signature red and white decor.  What do I think of when I hear someone say Diner?  Burger, Fries and a Malt.  That's what you'll get here.

I went with The Big Mike.  Two 1/4 pound angus beef patties, seared on the flat top grill.  American cheese beautifully melted on each patty.  They chop up some raw onions, give you a bunch of sliced pickles and a little tub of 1000 island dressing on the side.  I liked getting everything on the side, allowing me to add as many onions, pickles and dressing as I wanted (all of it, of course)! I actually got some of their delicious chipotle mayo and slathered the top bun with it, then loaded everything up.  The bun was lightly toasted and good.

This burger is just what you would expect.  A little greasy, a little juicy, a little cheesy.  It had all of the components I wanted and it was a good, flat top, diner burger!

The Big Mike was created in honor of Snuffy's founder, Mike Mueller.  A portion of this burger's proceeds will go to the Mike Mueller Fund, which supports local athletes around the Twin Cities Metro Area.

  • We've reached the final month of the year, and with it, the final 2019 Burger of the Month at Celts Craft House.  The bad weather has been making me think about getting away for a few days, then reality sets in and I tell myself to be patient, it's only December.  I found a fix for my cold weather blues when I stopped in for Chef Al's December BOM.  He's taking us on a flavor cruise around the Mediterranean.

Celts Craft House - Apple Valley / Mediterranean Burger (December BOM)

Can a burger transport you to another place?  It sure can.  I've never been to this part of the world, but the next best thing is being treated to the many different flavors of this area, and that's what Al has done so superbly.

The brisket, chuck & short rib beef blend is seasoned with salt, pepper, oregano, garlic and lemon zest.  It doesn't happen often, but I distinctly tasted the seasoning.  The beef was juicy and cooked to my perfect pink temp.  Manchego cheese gives us its zesty, slightly salty taste and buttery texture.  It's a little more work to get it melted, but it was.  I love olives, and Al's olive tapenade is fantastic, and you definitely get enough to enjoy it.  The final piece is a mound of Caesar salad below the patty.  If gives you a salty, lemony, garlicky flavor and a nice little crunch.  Denny's 5th Ave. Bakery provides the soft, lightly toasted bun.

There are so many flavors to enjoy that you won't want this burger experience to end.  I know I didn't.  I definitely wanted another one.  This is a fantastic burger!  If you are planning a trip this winter, head south to Celts Craft House in Apple Valley for a delicious taste of the Mediterranean!  You've got the month of December to do it!

  • One cool thing about being on this burger journey, is the genuine surprise I get when a great burger comes out of left field from a place you would never expect.  I’m talking about a St. Paul neighborhood restaurant known for their Old Fashioned Hot Dago and Chicken Parmesan, both of which have their signature red sauce.  This place has been around for 86 years.  If you love Italian food, you probably are familiar with this restaurant, but until today, I don’t think it’s ever been mentioned as a place to get a great burger.  These are changing times!  The restaurant is DeGidio’s, the home of your next 5 Star Burger!

DeGidio’s - St. Paul / DeGidio Burger

On the surface you might be saying, what the heck, how is that possible?  But, when we find out that owner Jason Tschida brought in Chef Shane Oporto, previously from La Belle Vie and most recently, Octo Fishbar, you can certainly believe it's possible they've got a winner at @degidios.restaurant.  Chef Oporto has some burger cred, and this burger will only add to that.  Two 1/4 pound beef patties, a blend of brisket, chuck & sirloin, are from Husnik Meat Co. in South St. Paul.  They are juicy, seasoned nicely, have a nice sear and have a soft, loose feel to the patties.  I talk a lot about something grabbing you right away.  It's the cheese!  Their special blend of Italian cheeses, Tallegio and Fontal, is velvety smooth, provides incredible meltability, and the sweet, nutty, tangy taste is fantastic!  This cheese does become one with the beef.  Another big hit is their delicious fancy sauce.  It has just a little bit of heat from the addition of Italian Calibrian peppers.  You are going to want to get a side of it for your fries.  A few very tasty, thin sliced, crunchy dill pickles, make their prescence known throughout the burger.  The egg bun from @franklinstreetbakery is soft, lightly toasted and close to perfect.  This is another burger I describe as having that soft feel to it.  It will melt in your mouth.  This burger will be in the conversation for best new burger of the year!  Catching a Wild game?  This needs to be part of your Burger stop!

  • Scenario:  You open a new restaurant.  You create a signature burger.  That burger gets some buzz and becomes very popular.  What's next?  You add more burgers to satisfy your patrons wishes!  Then you start a Half Price Burger Night, which puts the cherry on top.  Brilliant!

The Brooklyn - Brooklyn Park / Brooklyn Masterwork Burger (Double)

When I tell you D'Amico & Partners are running the show, now the buzz makes sense.  Pretty good track record from these brothers.  I was invited to kick off @thebrooklynrestaurant first Burger Night.  Every Monday from 5:00 - 9:00pm, all burgers are 1/2 price.  Tell me that's not a big deal.  I'm focused on that signature burger I mentioned above, The Brooklyn Masterwork Burger.  You can go single patty or my desired, double patty.  It's a brisket, chuck blend from @reviercattle.  The 1/4 pound patties are normally cooked to a medium well temp, but you certainly can ask for your desired temp.  They nailed my pink request!  The beef was juicy, seasoned to my liking and certainly is a great anchor for this fantastic burger!

American cheese?  Of course!  Melt it just a little bit more.  Underneath the patties are a couple of sliced tomatoes, cooked confit style.  The tomatoes, roasted in olive oil and a few different spices add another flavor to the mix.  There are a few delicious, vinegar type pickles on the side.  I just popped them in my mouth.  So, if you look at my picture, you see lettuce.  I'm not going to say a lot of lettuce, but a generous amount.  It's not too much at all.  The shredded Romain lettuce is mixed with their fantastic masterwork sauce.  You could say it's related to 1000 island, but it's so much more, including some Uncle Pete's Mustard.  The lettuce/sauce mix will hit you right away and it's a great flavor to start with.  The soft, lightly toasted potato bun is fantastic!  This Burger needs to get on your list!  You will love it!

The Foxtrot Burger Spot - St. Paul / Como Colossus

You may have known this place as Delicata Pizza, but owner, Mattie O'Reilly, closed the pizza joint and opened it up as a Burger spot.  I think they are riding the Burger wave.  They've got a long list of different burgers on the menu to satisfy your different tastes.

Being in the Como area of St. Paul, I went with what is their signature burger, the Como Colossus.  The double patties are a blend of brisket and chuck.  There is a thick, well seasoned char on them, which I really liked.  They normally cook the patties through, but you can ask for pink.  My patties were no pink, and I would have liked it them a little more pink.  Their cheese choice is cheddar.  It's a very thin slice on each patty.  I would like a little more cheese as well.  There are a couple of thin sliced tomatoes on top, then what they call whizbang sauce is poured on.  That sauce is very good.  I got some on the side for my fries, or pour some more on top of the patties if you like.

We are not done yet.  Below the patties is some pretty tasty bacon jam.  It's a dryer bacon jam, but is good.  The bun from @grandmasbakerywbl is squishy and fantastic!  I think you should check out @foxtrotstp.  They will definitely have something you'll like.

  • My first two loves are Burgers and Pizza.  Two weeks ago I had a great burger at a pizza place.  This week I'm having a great, classic style, pizza themed, burger, at an Irish Pub.

Celts Craft House -  Apple Valley / Margarita Pizza Burger

When Chef Al said he had created a pizza burger for his November Burger of the Month, my first thought was of the pizza burgers I'd had in the past, with a heavy tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese and pepperoni thrown on.  I should have known Al's version would be nothing like that.  It has to start with a great piece of beef.  Their blend of chuck, brisket and short rib was seasoned well with salt, juicy and hit my perfect temp.  Al takes his house made marinara and reduces it down until it is very thick, then ladles a good amount on the patty.

Next, is his 3 cheese pizza blend, which includes mozzarella, provolone and reggiano.  It's melted beautiful over the marinara topped patty.  Al takes a couple thin slices of tomatoes and grills them until they are nice and soft, then adds a few fresh basil leaves to top things off.  He then takes his roasted garlic and spreads it on the toasted and simply perfect bun from Denny's 5th Avenue Bakery.  You'll certainly get the tomato taste from the marinara and the grilled tomatoes, and the great pizza flavor of the delicious 3 cheese blend.  Basil and tomatoes go hand in hand.  There is not one flavor that dominates everything else.  It's perfectly balanced.  If you like Margherita pizza, I think you will love this burger!

  • Last night marked the 72nd #TCBurgerNight with @phatphood & @shawnsrodgers.  I've always looked forward to seeing the boys and dominating any and all Burgers that cross our paths that night.  I had a little extra spring in my step, thinking about a special Burger getting unveiled.

Holman's Table - St. Paul / 300 Dollar Burger
.
Holman's Table opened their doors back in January of 2018.  They offered a couple of the same burgers as their sister restaurant, @rockelmtavern.  I remember looking at their menu and saying to myself, those are the same burgers, I don't really need to get out there right away.  That all changes now!  Owner Troy @trexreding and Chef Garrett Green have unveiled their signature Burger, the 300 Dollar Burger, and you are going to want to plan a visit to @holmanstable very soon to check out this decadent beauty!

Their beef is Black Angus from @reviercattle out of Olivia, MN.  It was flavorful, juicy, cooked to the perfect pink temp and seasoned pretty well.  The creamy, nutty gruyere cheese is perfectly melted.  A delicious Madeira Truffle Demi is poured over the cheese.  This is a classic French brown sauce made with Madeira wine.  There will be even more sauce added, to mix for dipping going forward.  Adding to the decadence, is a couple of square pats of savory, foie gras butter added at the end to slowly melt over the patty.  The brioche bun from @franklinstreetbakery is toasted beautifully, has a nice soft feel and is a great choice to finish off this outstanding Burger.  The bun will be scaled back size wise a little bit to perfect the meat to bun ratio, although I didn't think it was much of an issue.  This is certainly an elevated, gourmet burger.

Chef Green has a bunch of new menu items that you'll love, including some fantastic poutine, but the 300 Dollar Burger is the centerpiece of it all.  Kudos to Troy and Garrett for creating a signature Burger that you can only get at Holman's Table.  Treat yourself to this baby!

  • St. Paul's Keg and Case Market has been a hot spot since it opened nearly a year and a half ago.  A collection of restaurants and market merchants, offering a bunch of different food options and shopping experiences.  Can I get a good burger somewhere in the market?  I saw Revival Smoked Meats was there and I was super excited to have yet another option to get their fantastic Revival Burger.  I found out there was one problem, you can't get their Top 5 burger at this location.  Fortunately, for me and you, Revival owners, @chefthomasb & Nick Rancone, have yet another restaurant at the market and it's got a pretty darn good burger.

In Bloom - St. Paul / Burger

When you go, sit in the kitchen area where everything is cooked.  They only use wood to cook.  The wood fire smell is so good.  It's pretty cool to watch everything.

These guys know how to make a fantastic burger.  Once again, I've found a burger that has that soft feel to it and melts in your mouth.  Local beef, an 80% brisket to 20% NY Strip, ground in house.  They nailed my pink temp!  It's soft and melts in your mouth.  You won't find many burgers around here that use raclette cheese, but it's a great choice.  It melts well and has a nutty flavor.  It is similar to gruyere.  They give you plenty of cheese.  Duke's mayo is squeezed onto the top bun.  I know a couple of people who love Duke's as we don't see it a lot up here.  The @thesaltytartstp bun is sheer perfection!  It's soft, lightly toasted and feels so good in your hand.  I did have to knock my rating down.  I needed a lot more seasoning on the beef.  This is a problem at far too many places.  This is a very good burger!  I was a little confused, and probably just don't get it, but with the burger you get a little bowl of charred onion jus.  It's like a little bowl of onion soup.  I don't know if they wanted me to dip my burger in it, but I didn't want to do that.  It was good on its own.  There also are no fries or any potato options for dinner to go with my burger.  There are breakfast potatoes you can get for brunch.  I get there are no deep fryers, but I want a potato option!

I found out there was one problem, you can't get their Top 5 burger at this location. Fortunately, for me and you, Revival owners, @chefthomasb & Nick Rancone, have yet another restaurant at the market and it's got a pretty darn good burger.

    When you go, sit in the kitchen area where everything is cooked. They only use wood to cook. The wood fire smell is so good. It's pretty cool to watch everything.

    These guys know how to make a fantastic burger. Once again, I've found a burger that has that soft feel to it and melts in your mouth. Local beef, an 80% brisket to 20% NY Strip, ground in house. They nailed my pink temp! It's soft and melts in your mouth. You won't find many burgers around here that use raclette cheese, but it's a great choice. It melts well and has a nutty flavor. It is similar to gruyere. They give you plenty of cheese. Duke's mayo is squeezed onto the top bun. I know a couple of people who love Duke's as we don't see it a lot up here. The @thesaltytartstp bun is sheer perfection! It's soft, lightly toasted and feels so good in your hand. I did have to knock my rating down. I needed a lot more seasoning on the beef. This is a problem at far too many places. This is a very good burger! I was a little confused, and probably just don't get it, but with the burger you get a little bowl of charred onion jus. It's like a little bowl of onion soup. I don't know if they wanted me to dip my burger in it, but I didn't want to do that. It was good on its own. There also are no fries or any potato options for dinner to go with my burger. There are breakfast potatoes you can get for brunch. I get there are no deep fryers, but I want a potato option!

I did find one on their Happy Hour menu that I can talk about.  @pigatemyza , which is under the Travail umbrella, offers this cheeseburger as a single or a double patty during Happy Hour, which is 3pm to 6pm, Tues. thru Thurs. and 3pm to 5pm, Fri. thru Sunday.  For now at least.  The Burger is only $4 for a single patty & $6 for a double patty.  Unbelievable!

A simple name, but not a simple taste.  This Burger creation will rock you!  It's a special, in-house grind of beef, which comes from @swanson_meats.  It is super juicy, seasoned well, cooked pink, and you'll notice an incredible outdoor grill type char.  It's a heavy char and I love it.

American cheese is nicely melted on both patties.  Next, there's a fantastic sweet chow chow pickle concoction.  It's kind of a pickled relish type topping.  The pickles are thin sliced and delicious.  Their whole grain type mustard aioli has a great flavor.  Finally, their house made bun not only is toasted, but I'd say there's some char going on with it as well and it certainly works for me.  It will squish down as you are holding it some, but it's a darn good bun!

  • I started a periodical burger lunch with the @ziegler_cat work boys and girls a few years ago, which has taken us to a lot of good burger spots in and around the Bloomington area.  We keep it within a 20 minute one way drive.  This trip, we hit, not an old diner, but a new one.

Flynn’s Diner - Richfield / Double Bacon Burger

@flynnsdiner has been open a few months, giving us that retro style decor and that classic menu with a little of their own modern spin on some things.  It’s counter service, so order up front and take a seat.  My double bacon cheeseburger was impressive looking.  The beef patties had a loose feel.  I didn’t get much juiciness or great seasoning from them, but they had a nice char.  It was definitely cooked to a medium well temp.  Cheddar cheese was melted well on each patty although I’d like a choice to have American cheese at a diner.  A couple strips of nicely cooked bacon.  I added some really good fried onions on top.  It does come with raw onions, lettuce and tomatoes on the bottom bun, with pickles as well.  There is some Flynn’s sauce on the top and bottom buns, but as you hear me say, if you're going to give me sauce, then give me some damn sauce!  I needed more than a teaspoon.  A slathering is what I'll take.  I couldn’t really tell you if the sauce was good or not.  The toasted bun was fine.

At the end of the day, or meal, it’s a good diner burger.  I’ll stop in again.

You can get Juicy Lucy's all over the Twin Cities.  Whatever you can dream up to go inside a burger, you can probably find somewhere, but I'm guessing there's not one exactly like the Jalapeño Popper Juicy from @jerseysbar.

They've had a number of Juicy Lucy's, which they call Jersey's Juicys, on their menu for quite some time, but this one is a little special.  Earlier this year, they competed in the 2019 @tcburgerbattle and not only won the People's Choice Award, but won the Judge's Choice Award as well.  That's the first time a contestant has won both trophies in the 6 years of the Battle!  Is it that good?  Yes, it is!

The beef is stuffed with pepper jack cheese and jalapeños.  There's your heat.  The patty is then breaded and deep fried.  Really?  Who does that?  Jersey's does!  The beef is cooked to a medium temp.  It's seasoned fine.  It does have a crispy feel on the outside as you can imagine a deep fried burger would, but it does have some pink inside.  It's not too dry.  They don't skimp on the cheese.  There are plenty of jalapeños inside as well.  To cool things down a little, the patty is topped with a tasty jalapeño cream cheese.  It's a good amount, but I don't think it was too much.  On top of that, some of their delicious, signature pepper jam is poured on.  That cools things down a little bit more.  I don't think this Juicy is too hot as you might think, with the jalapeños and pepper jack cheese.  It's definitely got some heat, but I think it's a great choice for anyone, except the super mild, "Minnesota hot" palettes out there.

The bun, from Main Street Bakery, is soft, toasted and very good.  After a couple bites, you are going to get cheese oozing out of this baby.  I love the heat, the sweet, and the cool of this Juicy.  If you want to try a double award winning burger, get out to Jersey's Bar and Grill!

  • I promised earlier this year to do my best to find some great burgers up in the Twin Cities, North Metro area, which I pretty much have to book a flight to get there from the South Metro, where I reside.  I'll tell you what, if there are more burgers like the one I just had, I'll be racking up some frequent flyer miles real fast!

The Tipsy Steer - Blaine / Bacon Jam Burger

A locally owned and managed kitchen, they share the building space with Invictus Brewing Co., and there is a lot of space.  The parking lot was full on a Tuesday night, but there were still many tables available.  Two days later and I'm still thinking about this burger and when the heck I can get back to enjoy it!

The two beef patties from @reviercattle out of Olivia, MN, have a beautiful, salty char on them.  They are cooked to a medium well temp, but are juicy and flavorful.  Creamy, buttery Brie cheese is a good choice here.  What will grab you with your first bite or two, is the sweet and savory bacon onion jam on top.  It is dominant and it is absolutely fantastic!  Some may think it adds too much sweetness, but not me!

Below the patties are some chives and a very good charred jalapeño aioli.  You also get a few pickles on the side.  The buttered and lightly toasted bun from Main Street Bakery, gives you a satisfying, soft feel.  It's fantastic!  I cannot wait to get back to @tipsysteer and try another burger and some more @invictusbrewingco beer.  I loved this burger!

  • There's a new building across from the Galleria in Edina, that looks like a modern day palace.  What is it?  It's an upscale, furniture retailer with two floors of high-end home furnishings and a lot more.  Doesn't this building have three stories?  Yes!  It certainly does.  When you get to the top of the stairs on the third floor, you will say a word or sentence closely related to Wow!  It's a beautiful spectacle.  This is the RH Rooftop Restaurant and it is something you need to experience.  There are trees, plants, a water fountain, couches and chandeliers for you to look at in amazement, all under a glass roof.  The site at night is amazing!  Oh, yes, I almost forgot to tell you about a Burger that's on the menu.  It resembles the famous Double Cheeseburger at Au Cheval in Chicago.  Before I get into the details, I just want you to know, It's Amazing! .

I'm going to change it up and talk about the bun first.  Think of a pillow and how it feels in your hands.  This brioche bun from @turanobread has that pillow factor to it.  Soft, toasted and magical.  Two custom blended, 1/4 pound beef patties coming from W.W. Johnson Meat Co., are juicy, cooked to a perfect medium temp and have that soft feel to them.  Sharp American cheese creeps over the sides of both patties and is delicious.  Next, you have a very important choice to make.  Do you want to add their, melt in your mouth, thick cut pork belly bacon to the burger?  The correct answer is, Absolutely!  I would order a plate of it by itself and it only adds to the magic of this burger.  I love the small dice of the red onions, the thin sliced pickles and the tasty Dijonnaise on the top bun.

JL Beers - Burnsville / Not Just A Nutter Burger

Trying another burger on their menu is a new thing for me.  I almost always get the JL Burger with bacon.  I add a third patty a lot of the time as well.  I'll be honest, I was hesitant to not get my go to burger.  The reason I did was because it was #nationalpeanutbutterandjellyday and I thought it would be kind of cool.

I didn't expect their PB & J to be this good.  Every time you order, your peanut butter is fresh ground on the spot.  It did taste very fresh.  It's creamy, but you can still feel a little bit of the ground peanut chunks in it.  Delicious peanut flavor.  Their red pepper jelly is cool and sweet.  Not too sweet though.  The combination is magic.  What adds even more flavor to this are the added diced jalapeños, which add just a little heat.  They give you a nice amount of peanut butter and red pepper jelly, but I like to have the option to get a little crazy with extra sauce, so I did get an extra side of both and I used it all!  A nice amount of pepper jack cheese also adds a little kick.

One fresh Midwestern beef patty, charred and seasoned nicely on their unique grill press.  You won't find many places that use cottage bacon.  Cottage bacon is made from the pig shoulder/butt.  It doesn't have that big strip of fat that regular bacon has, so it's all meat.  Totally works for me.  The nicely toasted, soft bun works.  The top bun might look a little big, but it squished down nicely.  No issues.  I will get this burger again, but it will be after a few more JL Burgers!

Sandy's is old school goodness.  @daddyomattyo stepped in and bought Sandy's a few months ago.  He's doing his best to keep its legacy alive.  Their World Famous Sandy's Olive Burger is not something you would easily find out in the burger world.  The beef patties are a special Sandy's blend from @swanson_meats.  These two, fresh 1/4 pound patties, charred nicely on the flattop grill, are seasoned and juicy enough for your liking.  A slice of melted American cheese tops each patty.  Sour cream is slathered on the top bun and a bunch of green olives are stuck in the sour cream.  There is no shortage of green olives.  They also give you quite a few sliced pickles to add, which I did.  As you may have guessed, it's better if you like green olives.  I love green olives.  I liked the flavor of them with the sour cream.  The bun was soft, lightly toasted and good.  I'm giving it a thumbs up. 👍

Curbside pickup is currently available every day from Noon until 7:00pm.  Order online, pull into their parking lot and call them and tell them you are there.  We got our food at the selected time and enjoyed our meals in our cars, in the parking lot, with correct social distancing.  It was good to see the guys and keep trying to do our part. Harry’s offers no contact, curbside pick up or door dash delivery.  Their to go menu changes frequently and they have daily specials as well as family style meals in big portions.  Check their website or their IG page for all of the details.

The Bacon Cheddar Burger starts with a 1/2 pound, fresh, local beef patty, char grilled close to my temp and seasoned enough.  It had some juiciness to it.  Cheddar can be a challenge to get melted correctly, but no issues here.  It was melted nicely.  I got three strips of thicker cut bacon.  Lettuce, tomato and onion are provided on the side as well as a few sliced pickles, which I threw on top.  One slight issue the last time I visited was that the bun was more dominant than I would have liked.  There has been a bun change and it is a good one.  It’s smaller and softer, lightly toasted and much better.  I enjoyed it.

  • What do I do after a couple of back to back visits to the Minnesota State Fair to recover from the insane amount of food consumed?  How about a short road trip to Rochester to check out a Burger place?

Hot Chip Burger Bar - Rochester / Classic Cheeseburger

This is a super cool bar, with a super cool patio and super cool music, which includes 80's Rock! 🎸

The Classic Cheeseburger is pretty cool as well. 😎  Two 4 oz. patties that definitely have that charbroiled feel to them.  These were seasoned nicely and although they are cooked through, they did have some juiciness to them.  The patties do seem on the small side.  American cheese, which they call "Merica" cheese, is melted nicely and soaks into the patties.  There are a couple of thick cut raw onions thrown on top.  They use Tony Packo's pickles, which are small chunks of deliciousness.  They are fantastic!  I think I'll pick up a jar of them on my next visit.  Their special sauce caps it off and it is also fantastic!  As you can see, I had them add some extra sauce.  The egg bun is nicely toasted, soft and very good.  There are 10 different burgers to choose from and you can add extra cheese, more sauce or another beef patty if you like.  Rochester is adding more and more good burgers to their stable of restaurants.  This is one of them that should get your attention.

  • October is a new month, and with that, we get a new Burger of the Month at Celts Craft House.  The exciting part for me is that, not only is this a new BOM, it's a new style of burger.  Chef Al has given us a double patty burger for the first time, and he's knocked it out of the park!

Celts Craft House - Apple Valley / Double Bacon Cheese Burger

I'm also excited about the fact that Al has been working on a new menu, and this burger will be added to the regular menu.  It totally deserves it.
.
Two 1/4 pound, chuck, short rib & brisket blended beef patties are seasoned perfectly, juicy, have a great char and are cooked to the perfect pink temp.  American cheese is melted beautifully, engulfing both patties.  Delicious bacon, cooked just right, tops both patties.  Next it's topped with a few very thin sliced red onions.  Just the right amount of shredded lettuce on the bottom bun with three thin sliced tomatoes.  Al slices the tomatoes thinner and spaces then evenly to minimize the patties from sliding all over the place.  There is a science to creating a great burger.  There are also a few tasty, thin sliced pickles on the side.

The top bun is generously slathered with taste bud satisfying seasoned sour cream, as Al calls it.  It a mix of sour cream, mayo, herbs and spices, and it's unbelievably good!  The bun, as always, from Denny's 5th Ave. Bakery, is toasted nicely and just the perfect burger bun to complete this masterpiece.

Chef Eli Renn, @eli_renn is one of these players!  @phatphood was lucky enough to get a good look at this burger a couple of weeks ago and tell us about it.  What he told us was a #TCBurgerNight was needed at @wayzatabarandgrill.  @shawnsrodgers & I certainly couldn't say no.

Wayzata Bar & Grill (The Muni) - Wayzata / Butter Burger (Double)

I think you know what happens when you have great beef, great cheese and a great bun.  A great burger happens!  The Butter Burger is proof of that.  This double patty is a super juicy blend of brisket, chuck eye and butter.  It is seasoned nicely, has great flavor and a super char.  This burger is modeled after the Oklahoma onion burger.  Yes, it is a thing.  Chef takes red onions and shaves them super thin.  They are placed over the ball of beef and then that is smashed down on the grill.  It's flipped once and the onions will cook into the beef on the hot grill.

American cheese is perfectly melted over each patty and becomes one with the beef.  The Mainstreet Bakery bun is soft, lightly toasted and very good.  You get a few pickles on the side to add some vinegar flavor to the burger if you like.  I liked.

This is a fantastic burger that deserves to be in your Top 10.  I'm thinking it will make its way into mine.  Check out my website (link in bio) to find out where. One thing it means is you may have a tough time pronouncing some of the menu items as well as knowing what the heck it's going to taste like.  But, I'll make it a little easier for you and say that you only need to know two words.  Really Good!  Oh, make that four words.  Fantastic Burger!

If you are planning to try a few other menu items besides the Burger, they have good descriptions and your server will do a great job of explaining what it is, and how delicious it will be.

Let's get to this burger.  The two thin patties are smashed and given a super char.  They were seasoned well.  They were slightly non-uniform, but no problem.  I didn't really get any pink, but they were juicy.  The cheese is amazing.  White American, melted perfectly, plentiful and oozing down the sides of the burger.

Topping that cheese are a couple of unique Spanish sauces.  Piperade, a mix of onions, peppers and tomatoes along with Romesco, consisting of tomatoes, garlic, roasted red peppers, almonds and more.  It adds delicious flavor to the burger.  There is a bit of tomato flavor you will notice.  Some tasty, tangy Duke's mayo is spread on as well.  The bun is soft and perfectly toasted.  This burger is another one that has the soft feel in your hand.  I think you will want to experience this fantastic burger!

There are numerous websites to assist you, but who just might be your best resource?  The locals.  We talked to a few locals about where to get a good burger in Daytona Beach.  They sent us packing!

Airport Restaurant & Gin Mill - DeLand / Port Burger

They sent us 20 miles southwest of Daytona Beach to DeLand Municipal Airport.  Located just outside the airport, you can watch planes take off and land, from your table.  You can even see skydivers jump out of perfectly good airplanes.  They've got a great outdoor patio and bar.  The burger, a 1/2 pound, Angus beef patty.  Charred nicely, seasoned pretty well and had some juiciness to it.  I chose White American cheese.  I added bacon, a couple strips, perfectly cooked.  A couple slices of fresh tomatoes, a thicker slice of red onion and a thin leaf of lettuce sit below the patty.  A good, toasted bun holds it all in nicely.  It’s a good burger.  We got some of their delicious tiger sauce for our fries.  I’d get an extra side and spread some on the burger to make it even better.

It’s a quick drive from the beach and a very cool spot for a burger, a cold beverage and some interesting things to watch.

I would love to see a few Epic Burgers come out this year.  I'm talking something very Instagrammable, but also very good.  Word spreads fast.  I do have ideas! 😉

I'd like to make this, not only the year of the Burger, but going forward, the decade of the Burger.  I think the Burger is already the most talked about single food item around here, and all of us do a great job posting Burgers, but I would like us to be even more "Burger Aware" this year.  Keep your eyes and ears open for new Burgers coming out.  Restaurants, if you have a new Burger coming out, get a foodie out there to help get the word out.  It does make a difference.  A new Burger should be a big deal.  Let's make them even bigger in 2020!

Finally, I'd like to thank everyone who follows me on my Burger journey.  I don't take any of you for granted.  I am grateful!

  • 2019 was a whole lot of Burger fun! It's great being a Burger lover in the Twin Cities! Our choices are virtually unlimited. What is 2020 going to bring? I'm hoping for more of the same. I just want to continue the Burger journey into the next decade.

    100 reviews were written in 2019. 90 of those were in the Twin Cities Metro Area. My goal is always 2 Burgers a Week. If I don't like a Burger, I will not review it. I am here to keep things positive! #onlygoodburgers .
