  • How COOL is this! @zeroco.com.au is calling for us to 'win the war-on-waste at your place'. They are running (a very successful) kick-starter campaign to help launch their zero-waste initiative, which is essentially the milk-in-bottle return/refill system of home cleaning products. It would be amazing to have this service available in our community to help eliminate 1 million plastic bottles from the system, in the first year!

  • Далее то, зачем хожу на #рынок лично я: #специи , качественное #масло -в данном случае, #оливковое , и, собственно, сами #оливки 😋 только на рынке вам взвесят самые ароматные, насыщенные эфирными маслами специи: сладкая паприка, жгучий чили, ядреный чеснок, яркий шафран...от разнообразия оливок (слово #маслины должно вообще уйти из обихода!существуют только #черныеоливки и #оливкизеленые !) вообще разбегаются глаза-всего не перепробовать: есть и горьковатые, и терпкие, и жутко соленые, и вполне себе приятные по солености...что до #oliveoil , то здесь правил при покупке всего 2, очень простых: 1) #масло должно быть исключительно осеннего отжима!и никак иначе. Берите только ту бутылку, где дата производства с 01.09 по 31.11, причем сентябрьское-октябрьское более предпочтительно; 2) бутылка должна быть из темного стекла;

#SaudavelTodosOsDias!

  • Olives, fresh off the tree! I've always been curious to taste them at this stage. I'd heard numerous times that fresh olives are "inedible" until you cure them to remove a bitter compound from the fruits. But nobody seemed to offer the information I really wanted to know: what do fresh olives actually taste like - aside from the bitterness? Specifically, do they taste... like olives?

I've finally gotten the chance to taste fresh olives, straight off the tree, and I can now answer the question I wondered for years. The answer is: YES! They taste like olives - rich, oily, with that wonderful complexity of intense flavors that you only get in a really good olive. But on top of all those pleasant tastes, there's a powerful, over-riding bitterness, too concentrated for me to want to eat more than a small nibble of this fruit.

That brings up another question: why would a tree invest all that energy to produce an oil-rich fruit, but then make that fruit too bitter for animals to eat? From a tree's point of view, a fruit is a way to entice animals to disperse its seeds widely into the world. Making those fruits intensely bitter seems counter-productive.

The answer to that riddle is: we're not the intended dispersal agent for this fruit - birds are. Birds apparently can't taste the bitterness. Wild olive trees co-evolved over millions of years with birds eating their small, bitter fruits, spreading those olive seeds over many miles, further than any mammal could. The trees cleverly evolved the bitter compound to deter mammals, so they could reserve the fruits for a type of animal that's more effective at spreading its seeds.

Humans stumbled onto this relationship about 7,000 years ago, and we did two things. We figured out techniques to leach the bitter compound out, and we bred olive trees with bigger, fleshier fruits, too large for birds to swallow whole. The olive tree has found an even more effective partner than birds to disperse itself around the world.

Next time you eat an olive, you might give a little thanks to the millions of years of birds, and thousands of years of humans, who made this fantastically delicious treat possible.

  • I had a great day yesterday at the fall festival with the family. We got some pumpkins, went on a hayride, ate some yummy food and the kids got their faces painted. It was a fun day with memorable moments.
.
On this plate is toasted sourdough with smoked salmon and dairy free almond cream cheese, avocado slices, a soft boiled egg and arugula salad with roasted pumpkin seeds, purple kraut, salty olives, a squeeze of lemon and a drizzle of olive oil. I hope you’re enjoying the day!

  • Sunny-side-up Eggs in olive oil with Sumac

The simplest yet most common egg dish that shows up on a Palestinian breakfast spread. This egg style was my frequent weekday bite before heading out to school. The eggs are fried in extra virgin olive oil and topped with salt, pepper and tangy sumac. Then warm olive oil was drizzled over the eggs and eaten by scooping it with warm pita bread.

Our fridge always had leftover plain rice. This was my Mom’s quick supper fix, just topping a heated plate of plain rice with this delicious egg recipe and a sprinkle of sumac. How do you like your eggs prepared?
