  • I recently read the poem by #kittyomeara Addressing our social isolation, the ways we adapt and find meaning at the moment. #isolationcreation. Here is a small part of the poem. “And people stayed at home
And read books
And listened
And they rested
And did exercises
And made art and played
And learned new ways of being
And stopped and listened”

This painting I wanted to achieve an almost #meditativemind, that a sense of Stillness.

  • Museums and galleries around the world are sending virtual bouquets from their collections, sharing a #MuseumBouquet with other cultural institutions.

This bouquet by #EthelStephens (1864-1944) is for our friends at @tweedregionalgallery!

Born in Sydney, daughter of Professor William John Stephens a famously enlightened early headmaster of The Sydney Grammar School and later Professor of Natural History at Sydney University, she became Julian Ashton’s first pupil in 1886. Stephens painted flowers and other still life subjects, portraits and landscapes.

In 1888 she exhibited in the amateur section of the Fine Arts section at the Women’s Industries Exhibition in Sydney. In 1890 she won two student prizes for her life-size studies of heads shown at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, listed as an amateur. In 1892 she was the first woman elected to the Council of the Art Society of NSW then was re-elected to the new Council in 1894. She became a founding member of the Society of Artists (her work was included in its 1901 Commonwealth Exhibition). Stephens began to take pupils and held painting classes in her studio from 1900. In 1905 with her cousin Alice Norton, Emily Meston and Aline and Edith Cusack she exhibited in the 'Five Lady Artists’ at Bradley’s Art Gallery in Sydney. At the 1907 First Exhibition of Women’s Work at Melbourne she won the prize for best flower painting.

Her work sold well and in the 1920s she was able to build a home and studio at Vaucluse and make several trips abroad. Travelling to London and Paris in 1920-23, she studied at La Grande Chaumière and exhibited in the Old Salon (1920-21). She regularly gave talks on her own and others’ art, on exhibitions and on her experiences as an art student, usually stressing the importance of tradition.

  • Obviously, for many artists, nothing has changed in their daily routine except that the world has fallen apart beneath their feet.
All forms of art are on the brink. Theaters, concerts, filmmakers, and visual artists of all kinds have seen the world seemingly cease interest in supporting the projects they were in the middle of. Cancelling shows or moving them to online only shows which really does nothing, for everyone, even us, are holding on desperately to our savings to weather whatever unforetold future is on approach in distant, dark clouds. • The best part about April is that the dramatic weather starts blowing in. We've had a few incredible storm systems go through here in eastern Washington already, including a small tornado which is VERY uncommon for the area! I'm crossing my finger for lots of dramatic skies without any property damage!⠀
