  • Computer glitch? Look for the interview of Notre Dame’s engineer. He said they updated everything a few years ago to prevent any potential electrical fires. He also said 800 yo oak would not burn like it did without some sort of kindling... and two fires started at one time? Supposedly the alarm was sounding for 25 minutes before they located the fire? This whole thing smells terribly fishy. #notredamefire

  • I didn't plan to post anything of my solo trip to Paris until after I return home...nor did I plan on witnessing the Good Friday Easter Service taking place outdoors. French Christians gathered on the Île de la Cité bridges for the outdoor service, with Notre Dame in view after the recent fire. While I am far from fluent in French, their singing gave me goosebumps and just being here was a holistic experience. I'm thankful I was able to be here today.

A four-hundred-year-old painting and all the artwork inside the Notre Dame were damaged by the immense fire that engulfed the Paris Cathedral on Monday. However, the holy symbol (cross) and the altar in the cathedral remained untouched.

People took to Twitter and expressed their amazement at the cross remaining intact.

However, giving it a scientific explanation, another Twitter user said ‘Because the melting point of gold is 1064°C and a wood fire burns at around 600°C’. Which is true, by the way!

Miracle or science, what do you think?

  • NOTRE DAME PRINT SERIES/ FUNDRAISER

Dear friends of architecture and history,

As a personal response to the devastating fire on Monday, I am offering a limited print series of my 2018 ink and watercolor “Notre Dame”, from which 100% of the proceeds will be donated toward the cathedral’s restoration.

Last spring, I was fortunate enough to spend the morning with Notre Dame. I had drawn her as a twelve year old on my first trip abroad with my grandmother, and was drawn back as an adult to do so again.

For four hours, I sat there, examining her elements one by one, building my drawing. The morning was somewhat chilly, and I had placed myself in the shade, atop my own little tower, balancing my grandmother’s watercolor pallet, brushes, water, pens, and inks while alternating between sitting and standing to keep my legs from falling asleep. (Plein air painting may be romantic, but it is seldom a physically comfortable experience.) Still, as usual, I found myself profoundly grateful to have my little spot, hidden and unbothered by the passing crowds: a few hours of communion with Notre Dame. I am all the more grateful now.

When I found out about the fire on Monday, I was heartbroken. Since then, I have read quite a bit and found some solace in the wisdom of others who have helped to place this event in a longer arc of history. I hope in this offering to find further meaning through action: to share her past and contribute toward her future.
The prints are 12"x16", on German etching textured archival paper, and will be signed and numbered in a series of 500. Prints can be purchased at the Sylvan Pen shop (link in bio) for $150 or $300; all proceeds (after accounting for printing, merchant service fees, and shipping costs) will be donated to La Fondation Notre Dame for the cathedral’s rebuilding.

Thanking you in advance for your part in restoring this historic treasure so that it may live on to inspire future generations.

  • So glad to hear that in all the devastation that occurred at Notre Dame that the bees have survived! “The bees that live on the roof of Notre Dame are alive and buzzing, having survived the devastating fire that ripped through the cathedral on Monday, the beekeeper Nicolas Geant confirmed to CNN.”

  • ✨Notre Dame, Paris✨
It’s somber to see this just two days after the fire, and as I walked around I noticed that my boots were covered in ash. The roof of Notre Dame is called the Forest because it took 21 acres of trees to build. France no longer has trees large enough to replace the wooden beams so they will have to find a different method for restoration. #NotreDame #Paris

  • I haven’t had a chance to react to the Notre Dame burning that took place on Monday because of this crazy hectic work week but here it goes: I’ve never been to Notre Dame but I was very upset watching Monday’s events unfold helplessly from the US. Later this year, Nick and I are going to Paris and we’re so incredibly excited to see the gorgeous cathedral. We had plans to attend Mass and tour it. It’s somewhere that I’ve always dreamed of seeing since I was small and now I’m so sad that those plans have changed.

I did what I always do when I have reeling thoughts and talked more about this in a blog post - link in bio. I started blogging to inspire others to travel and go after their dreams. Right now. Not later down the road when it’s too late.

To the people of Paris, I can’t even begin to imagine what you are feeling. I’m praying for you and for everyone’s safety as the Cathedral gets rebuilt.
