  • In Paris between the world wars, specifically in the bohemian, artist haven of Montmartre, a community of queer women grew and thrived (to the extent any oppressed community can).
.
One bar named Le Monocle is known for being an epicenter. The name was taken from the trend at the time for queer women to flag by wearing a monocle. I don't know about you but that is so dapper I'm really tempted to make myself a monocle lapel pin...
.
Anyway, the second world war swept it away along with its purge of humanity and culture, and though it did reopen its doors after the war on the other bank in Montparnasse, it never saw quite the same life it held before. The above photo is the New Monocle that still stands at 60 Boulevard Edgar Quinet. 🌈
