  • Had an incredible day on Monday looking through all the arachnid specimens at Queensland museum.
Even learned how to distinguish the different kinds of mygalomorph spider. Mygalomorphae is a family of spiders with primitive lungs and mouthparts including species such as the funnel web, mouse spider and trapdoor. Other cool facts include the several types of silk spiders produce; a different formula for each use such as the structural strands of webs, the sticky strands of webs, the strand of web to wrap up prey, the stand of web to insulate eggs and the hard protective silk to protect eggs. Spiders that have more developed systems even have extra glands for other web types such as their little spinerette parachutes.

It’s important to note that whilst these creepy crawlies seem scary, they play an integral role in the ecosystems they inhabit. So that little huntsman on your wall, or orb weaver in your garden are actually quite shy but beneficial predators that keep other damaging or annoying insects at bay (such as houseflies and mosquitoes indoors and caterpillars/moths, locusts and others outdoors)

This exhibit is doing wonderful things in extinguishing fear around these intricate and beautiful creatures. And inspiring enthusiasm and knowledge in the younger generations. Hopefully when you next see a spider you can admire the subtle intricacies of its work, or at least safely remove it and relocate it outdoors where it can continue it’s good work for the ecosystem.

  • So interesting how the shape of board shifts your perspective and composition. Made some real progress on the perimeter this evening.
