  • Despite internet memes suggesting that social distancing is an introvert’s paradise, it’s really not that simple, says University of Arizona psychologist Matthias Mehl.

While it’s true that introverts may be more accustomed to – and comfortable with – spending time alone, both introverts and extroverts need human interaction for their health and well-being, says Mehl, a professor and director of the Naturalistic Observation of Social Interaction Laboratory in the UArizona Department of Psychology. “Indeed, introverts have – on average – fewer social interactions and extroverts have – on average – more interactions,” Mehl said. “From that perspective, social distancing creates more of a challenge for extroverts because it’s harder for them to get the large number of social interactions they typically have. But in no way is it ‘business as usual’ for introverts.” Since extroverts might be more flexible than introverts in the way they seek out social interaction – reaching out via phone or social media, for example – they might actually be in a better position while following public health advice to practice social distancing in an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19, Mehl said. “We find in scientific data that extroversion is reliably correlated with receiving more social support, and we think this is because extroverts have an easier time reaching out to others, saying they need help and support,” Mehl said. “From that perspective, extroverts may actually have an edge in social distancing. Dentro de una hora pude pasar desde el agobio tras de una semana aburrida encerrado en casa, hasta la alegría conduciendo mi scooter, la temperatura agradable, los paisajes tinerfeños a la vista, las palmeritas, la playa, el océano, el aire libre... aunque todo muy extraño, no habiendo nadie por ningún lado... para acabar volviendo al agobio más total, viendo la cara desalentada de la gente en el supermercado, esas miradas perdidas detrás de las mascarillas empujar los carritos prácticamente sin ánimo...

  • Hello. For the remainder of lockdown I am aiming to put out 3 podcasts a week - Monday, Wednesday and Friday. These will be conducted over Skype and will mainly be with previous guests and friends of the podcast, checking in with them all and discussing how things with Coronavirus are unfolding and discussing the potential mental health ramifications for ourselves and everyone affected...so everyone.   • Patience is a virtue, so they say. Well there’s little of it in this house I can tell you! I’m even getting on my own nerves. This horribleness will pass but we have to be patient. So homes will be in absolute chaos. What we’re doing is massive!! Our NHS, our carers. All our frontline workers out their are risking their lives. And there’s actually non humans giving abuse to frontline staff not just nhs council workers too. WTF?? These things are not human and they should be locked up. Absolutely revolting. I’m scared. Scared as to what’s going to happen to us. Trying to keep myself busy but it’s not really working. We just have to look out for each other. Stay safe everybody and much much love.xxxx. *
