  • Leo Messi. ⚽️⠀
⠀
Extraterrestrial. Magician. La Pulga. The Best.⠀
Messi goes by many names, but no matter what you decide to call him, his brilliance remains the same.⠀
⠀
I think we can all agree that out of all the amazing qualities that Leo possesses, his dribbling ability is what has set him apart for the last last decade, but why did he spend so much time perfecting his technique and how did he achieve this absolutely insane level of skill? ⠀
⠀
Leo’s dribbling, at a glance, can seem selfish. Especially in his early days as a professional, Messi often picked up the ball from the wing or from deep in the middle of the pitch and just blew past defenders, not linking up with teammates (since he didn’t have to) until the final moment where he’s at a position where passing the ball would more likely result to a goal than if he were to take a shot for himself. Many would consider this, “selfish” and even think Leo as a ball hog. However, if you analyze his game, you see that not only is that statement false, but his dribbling is actually a SELFLESS action. See whenever a player has the ball, he/she becomes the center of attention. They are in control of the game because they have the ball. Messi knows this and take advantage of this information every single time he steps foot on the field. Leo attracts defenders towards him and away from his teammates, causing so much time and space to be freed up for them. While the defenders close him down, Messi is able to tear right through them and what does he have after he gets past them; teammates with huge amount of time and space ahead of them, waiting for a pass that can lead to a goal. This is why Leo’s dribbling isn’t a selfish action. He’s doing this to make the game easier for his teammates. ⠀
⠀
How can you develop the technique that Messi possesses? Before I tell you, you need to understand that if you truly want to be at this level of skill it is 100% possible, but it is going to take long tiring hours perfecting your technique. Don't worry about obtaining his skill. Instead, focus on developing your own dribbling ability a little bit every day. (Continue Reading In Comment Section)

  • There is much more to Messi’s game, but here are some things that make it up! You can work on each of these areas!
-
🔥 Messi makes things happen. Whether that is through his exceptional passing ability, his goal scoring, or his ability to beat players. A playmaker needs all of these qualities!
-
⚽️ It seems like he had the ball glued to his boot at times! Doing this allows him to beat so many people even in tight spaces. It allows him to keep the ball under his spell! Ball mastery drills will help this area!
-
👤 One thing about Messi is he loves to combine with his teammates to open up space and play around the defense. Little combos, one twos and so on are great for creating space and getting in behind!
-
🧐 Finally, find pockets of space! Messi will drift around the pitch until he finds a pocket of space where he can receive the ball. This is actually a skill and a very valuable one for playmakers who require a lot of the ball. Constantly be looking out for these pockets and move into them!
