  • What 👏🏽 is 👏🏽 this 👏🏽?! Very bold step indeed. Does this article have the power to change the entire way the archaic and completely rigid medical schools do their schedules? God forbid we stray away from a tradition that has been in place since the 1800s! This is a very surprising and almost shocking article, but it brings up good points. My question is — what if these incoming medical students don’t volunteer to do this? Do they have automatic matriculation into a 2021 class? A lot of questions. A lot of what ifs. What do you all think about this?! #JAMA #boldmove #medschool #medschoollife #covid19 #pulmonary #criticalcare #newwayoflife #newtraditions

This study published in JAMA (Journal of American Medical Association) revealed decreased all cause mortality (less chance of dying) with the more steps you walk daily (refer to the chart). Greater step intensity on the other hand was not associated with lower mortality.

  • [Difference between Rheumatic Fever Arthritis VS Rheumatoid Arthritis]⁣
⁣
Eventhough the symptoms of rheumatic fever (RFA) are similar to those of Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), these two diseases are not related.⁣
⁣
🔎 Rheumatic fever is a severe inflammatory disease that develops from complications of strep throat. ⁣
⁣
🔎 Rheumatic fever commonly affects children between the ages of 5 and 15. ⁣
⁣
🔎 Like RA, the RFA affects the joints. But unlike RA, rheumatic fever arthritis only lasts for a few weeks, it's a temporary condition. ⁣
⁣
🔺 NB! - Severe cases of (acute) rheumatic fever can result in long-term heart damage, known as rheumatic heart disease.⁣

  • This portable, handheld ultrasound device is called the @clariusmhealth HD C3 Scanner and it's taking telemedicine to another level. (via @techthatmatters)

In just 10 seconds, a doctor can conduct full-body imaging – from the heart, lungs, and abdomen, etc. using a single scanner and launching the Clarius App on iOS and Android.

It’s as easy as using a phone’s camera app. All you have to do is tap, switch modes, pinch to zoom, slide up and down to change gain, among other user-friendly features. Doctors can easily store and send exams from the Clarius App.

The Clarius HD C3 Scanner also allows doctors to seamlessly transition from scanning the abdomen to the extremities without changing devices. With top-notch imaging quality, this pocket ultrasound device can navigate the depths and complexities of the abdomen, superficial anatomy, and the heart.

As with some devices battery life is an issue, but the Clarius HD C3 Scanner and has battery longevity. It’s powered by a replaceable and rechargeable battery that stays cool due to its liquid cooling system. This element prevents it from overheating and allows continuous scanning to up to 45 minutes.

  • I know things have been hard for everyone lately. Myself included. A lot of second year medical students are in dedicated USMLE prep right now. During any other year it would’ve just been a really difficult grind. This year, it’s a really difficult grind amidst everything going on around us. A lot of us wish we could be out there doing anything even remotely helpful. But so much of our time is taken up by studying all day for the exam.
•
It’s necessary part of our education though. We’re doing this so that one day we can be out there in the front lines just like our healthcare heroes. For now, we just have to keep working towards our goal while doing our part to support our healthcare workers and spread truthful information.
•
One thing I find helpful is to stay informed about COVID-19, but to also refrain from checking the news too often. Checking social media and the news excessively can add a lot of anxiety, especially during an intensive study period. We have to remember to do our best to maintain our physical and mental health during this time. A lot of us are looking back at photos of happier days (picture of a bustling Las Vegas city behind me earlier in the year). There may be a long road ahead, but we’ll be back out there soon enough. Let’s do our best to stay positive!

  • How to stop procrastinating:
I recently saw this article where they talked about ‘Parkinson’s Law’. Parkinson’s law is the concept that “work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion". If you give yourself a week to complete a two hour task, it will probably take you a week.
This is also the reason why we procrastinate on a task: let’s say an essay that is due in 3 weeks. However, when the essay is due tomorrow, we are able to write 5000 words in 24 hours 🤔. Fortunately, we can use this law to our advantage by creating our own deadlines. The next time that you’re making a to-do list give yourself half that time to complete the task and make your own deadlines. This will create a sense of urgency and will (hopefully) stop you from procrastinating✨
P.s. don’t be harsh on yourself

On a scale from 1-10 how much of a procrastinator are you?

  • Have your premed advisors or professors suggested you only apply to DO schools based solely on your low GPA? .
Don’t limit yourself! An advisor told me to ONLY apply to DO schools based on my low GPA. Don’t get me wrong, I always had plans to apply to DO schools because I knew the difference between DO and MD is so minimal that in the end, both make you a great doctor. But to tell someone to only apply to one type of school because of their grades, is not good advice. .
All of the DO schools I applied to rejected me. ALL. .
Meanwhile, I got 6 MD interviews (and some at schools that advisors would have never allowed me to apply to, but I did). I did have a near average MCAT score for matriculating medical students so I definitely think this helped me get my foot in the door. Then my personal statement and activities took me all the way to the interview invites. .
My advice: apply to MD and DO schools and don’t limit yourself to only one. Don’t let a low GPA or MCAT score deter you from applying to medical school. Just be sure you have a strong MCAT if you have a low GPA, and vice versa. Of course, this is my experience and others may have a different story to tell. ¡Si se puede! .
