  • Finished at last!! I've just finished Jerry's Oppenheimer's Toy Monster and I must say that, in general terms, is a good reading. For me the first part is pure gold, so much information about the beginnings of Barbie, very Jack Ryan centered with his lights and darks but with many witnesses who give very interesting facts and many names that I wrote down to expand the information later. You can have hints of what could be Mattel at that time and in, some parts, you can imagine it as if it were a movie.
The second part is pretty interesting and very Jill Barad’s rising centered. Those were the years I was a child and I've loved to see what they were cooking at mattel while us children were playing. The truth is that I had the sensation that Jill was like a Barbie doll herself in the middle of all this 80's and 90's craze that you could see in the american movies and I’ve felt the essence of those years too revisiting again my childhood imaginary about that.
The book decreases and the third part, for me, is quite boring, the Mattel of the 21st century under the CEO Robert Eckert and is full of problems and intoxications because of the materials, accidents with the toys, litigations and trials for MGA Bratz line.
We can’t forget that, as the title says, is a book that pretends to explain the shadows of Mattel, not the lights, and for a sensitive reader about the topic the book can be a little disturbing but I still enjoyed it so, in general terms... yes I recommend it.
