  • Found the latest batch of 2019 Matchbox miniatures. There was a sealed case sitting on the shelf so I know I found all models. Once again, at my lucky local Walmart. There are eight of them (in no particular order): 1) MB857 Chevy Suburban
2) MB1182 Jeep Wrangler
3) MB1180 Dodge Coronet
4) MB1001 Chevy El Camino
5) MB765 Austin Mini Cooper
6) MB909 Rapid Rescue
7) MB917 Mini Dozer
8) MB1092 Mercedes GLE Coupe
I love to collect factory bloopers but the error has to be on the model, i.e., the model is still an error when it is released from its packaging. I do not go after models packaged the wrong way. Having said that I made an exception to this rule by buying the Mercedes packaged the wrong way because Mercedes is my favorite car and I found it on the pegs. Otherwise no other reason for this model to be in my collection. Slide for more fun. Happy collecting.

ONE TRICK PONY
RCCA 1964 Dodge Super Stock Drag Car, (Bill “Maverick” Golden), made by Action for Racing Collectables, 1994.

In 1992, the Racing Collectables Club of America (RCCA) launched a dazzling assortment of brightly colored and accurately detailed 1960s NASCAR vehicles. This was at about the same time Racing Champions introduced a similar line.

But you could only buy the RCCA cars by joining their club and ordering them through the mail. Quality was a cut above Racing Champions. Separate chromed-plastic bumpers and grilles as well as superior paint finishes set them apart.

Then, in 1994, Action Performance purchased RCCA. That’s where this car comes in. Action created two drag racing cars in their “Platinum Series.” One used the body from the RCCA 1962 Pontiac stock car. But this Dodge has no NASCAR equivalent in the RCCA lineup. I believe Bill Golden’s “Maverick” racer was the only time the casting was ever used.

Both drag cars feature a redesigned chassis to accommodate slightly fatter wheels in rear and skinny tires up front. While all of the original RCCA stock cars featured a die-cast chassis, the drag cars made do with plastic.

This car may look familiar to Johnny Lightning collectors as RC2 produced a similar car 16 years later in 2010. But look closely and you’ll see many differences, most notably the upscale Polara C-pillar on this car and the correct “330” C-pillar on the JL.

Note: I encourage photo/post sharing on social media as long as the pictures aren’t altered. You may share these photos and/or text wherever you like.
