What’s the 411, CD

Once I had to have my car towed. This big truck shows up, and this huge white dude steps out. He looks like he just stepped out of a movie. He’s baldish and bearded, wearing overalls and som day glo green high visibility gear. Tattoos run up this guy’s arm and neck. He throws my car up on the back of the truck, says to me “Let’s do this.” We jump in the truck, I tell him where to go. He turns on the radio which is cranked up as loud as it can go. It’s Mary J. Blige and he’s singing along as we drive to our destination.
I’ve never been a big fan of tracks like “Leave a Message.” Entirely skippable. I’m not a big fan of “Reminisce,” or any music where the singer holds out these notes for long periods of time. Yeah, she can sing, but it just ain’t for me. I think “Real Love” is better. The beat is better and faster. It’s a less drawn out affair. “You Remind Me” is even better. It’s got a solid beat and direction. All of the tracks so far do sound a bit dated; it’s obvious this is from the 90’s.
I don’t remember Busta Rhymes being around back in ‘92, I thought it wasn’t until the early 2000’s that he really blew up, but he makes an appearance here on “Intro Talk,” which, unfortunately, I would just skip over. I actually like “Sweet Thing,” which makes the want to skip over “Intro” even greater. “Love No Limit” isn’t bad either. “I Dont Want to Do Anything,” May be my favorite track on the album up to this point. “Slow Down” is way to slow jammy for me. “My Love” and “Changes I’ve Been Going Through” are more my speed as far as R&B goes. “What’s the 411,” isn’t a bad way to close this album either. I can’t say I remember Grand Puba.

  • Day 9: (1998) The Fugees were the rising heroes of RnB and East Coast rap. The trio, consisting of Wyclef Jean, Pras Michel and Lauryn Hill, topped the charts with massive hits like "Ready or Not" and "Killing Me Softly." The fame was overwhelming for the incredibly young Ms. Hill, who was only 20 years old when the group broke up due to rising tension amidst Lauryn's waning mental health. She then sought to find healing within music, working tirelessly with friends and collaborators DiAngelo and Mary J. Blige on a small batch of songs designed to embody the polar opposite of smash hit singles. The batch, under the production of Hill's partner Rohan Marley (son of reggae posterchild Bob Marley), grew into a momentous album that captured incredibly unusual themes in hip hop during the late 90's, such as female empowerment (Doo Wop), love as a metaphysicality (Ex Factor), a lead female rapper (Lost Ones) and even gospel allegories (To Zion). The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill was an immediate overnight spectacle, winning Grammy's, selling out the largest venues in North America, and generating non-stop airplay of the album's lead single, Doo Wop. Hill sought to bring herself back up from the ruin of her mental lows, injecting her pained and passionate singing throughout this meticulous and multifaceted project. It remains her only studio album, but there have been recent rumors of Hill working on new music, so who knows where that will go?
