  • On one of my very first layovers, I was surprised I could visit Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s home in Montgomery, AL. So I ubered down, walked around the city center, visited the Rosa parks museum, inhaled glorious southern food, and strolled to what I thought was the main event. In retrospect, there wasn't anything ghostly about his home, nor unsettled. Even with a gun shot mark outside on the porch. Rather it had this air of total peace. The bedrooms, the kitchen... all frozen in time. I wonder what he sees when he looks down at all of us, what does he feel? Does he smile at the progress, or furrow his brow at the distance we have to go?
The museum added beautiful engravings on the ground and at that time of year the leaves were just covering them so. I stared at the one at my feet and it stared at me, "Forgiveness".

Myon Burrell was falsely accused of being involved in the shooting death of Tyesha Edwards while Amy Klobuchar was the Hennepin County Prosecutor. She ran on a “tough-on-crime” campaign and delivered on her promise by seeking a harsh punishment for an innocent man where evidence was available to exonerate #MyonBurrell and evidence was available that impugned the case brought by the police and prosecutors. Since turning to running for the presidency, #AmyKlobuchar has used the case as a badge of honor in her campaign and only recently has begun back-peddling. 16 at the time, Burrell was interrogated for 3 hours. He asked to speak with his mother 13 times and his mother was also asking to speak with him, but they denied both of them, violating their rights. Burrell was at a Cub Foods equipped with security cameras at the time and urged his defense and prosecutors both to obtain the footage. Neither party deemed it worthwhile to do so, treating Burrell’s life as if it had no worth. Ike Tyson admitted to the shooting and made it clear that no one else shot and that Burrell wasn’t even involved. During all of this, Klobuchar was at the helm of the prosecution, and Burrell squarely lays the blame upon her. Even after his original conviction was thrown out, she vowed to try him again, without ever taking the time to review the exculpatory evidence. When his mother died in an accident going back home from visiting him, Klobuchar denied his request to go to her funeral.

  • Mechee X (@MecheeX) breaks down the reason that only white people can be racist. Sure, everyone can be prejudiced or think that their race is superior, but that leaves out an integral part of racism: power. She points out that we could call a white person a honkey but don’t have the power to control the schools that white people go to, don’t have the ability to create false curriculum that “blackwashes” history and don’t have the ability to create a school to prison pipeline that creates mass incarceration of white people. This is an example in just one area, and the argument can be expanded to talk about housing, to talk about the police, or any number of things in which white people maintain their dominant power. She goes on to urge Black people to stop talking about, “Well, Black people can be racist too, you know,” which is one of the most annoying and ignorant things a Black person can say. If a Black person hates a white person because they’re white that is nothing like having a whole system created to harm and exploit Black people because they’re Black. Racism (i.e. racial oppression) is not the same as prejudice.

  • Wise words from the good Doctor.

Of course, there are so many applications for this. He said "all" life.

Be careful what you do to others, say to others, let those around you do and say without comment, etc., whether that be other humans you've been indoctrinated to mistrust, judge, etc.; other beings you've also been told to dislike: microbes, weeds, etc.; or even parts of your own body—the ones causing you pain or holding disease, for example.

He said "all" life, and I agree. Our lives are tied to one another's, and I prefer that mine be compassionate, including where there is confusion, a lack of understanding, or hard emotions.

How can we expect to receive something other than what we give to others?

120 years after the first time the anti-lynching bill was introduced, it finally passed in the House of Representatives with 410 voting for and 4 voting against. Yes, four white men still feel like saying lynching Black people should be a crime is just going too far. What are Black people going to want next? As we all know, first lynching becomes illegal and then all white people become slaves… 🙄🙄 So Republican-leaning Independent, Justin Amash of Michigan, and Republicans Louie Gohmert of Texas, Thomas Massie of Kentucky and Ted Yoho of Florida voted no on the bill. If any of these are your representatives, make sure you let everyone to know how racist they are. It is absolutely insane that it has taken a country that pretends to be about justice 120 years to pass a bill that should have been law since its founding. It is even more insane that four elected officials still voted no 20 years after the year 2000. Just your all-too-common reminder of how racist this nation is.

  • What a shrine: Lord Jesus Christ, APJ Abdul Kalam (President of India, 2002 to 2007), Martin Luther King Jr., Bob Marley, Swami Vivekananda (one of the first to introduce yoga to the US), and Sachin Tendulkar (Cricket God of India). Religion, politics, sports, yoga, and music rolled up into one shrine. Through each of these domains, humans seek to attain freedom. But outer freedom does not bring about inner freedom. Rather inner freedom manifests or brings about outward freedom. Shrine or no shrine, the shrine is within.

  • Just a mom in yoga pants that decided to go for it.

It took me almost two years, a third pregnancy and a whole lot of creeping my coach to finally decide I was ready.

Ready for more.

Ready for change.

Just flat out ready.

That first little step... you better bet it was the hardest part.

But I was and still am worth it.

Y O U • A R E • W O R T H• I T

Take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just the first step.

    -Martin Luther King JR.

Finishing out my first round of BARRE next week. These 8 weeks flew by. I’m starting my second round on March 9 for anyone who wants to jump in with me. If BARRE isn’t your thing, no worries. We can find the program that is right for you!!
    .
All you have to do is say Y E S.

    I am ready.

    Let’s do this. 👊🏻

  • The Upper and Middle Schools marked Black History Month with special assemblies in February. Both assemblies featured student performances of excerpts from “The Mountaintop,” a play by Katori Hall that is a fictional portrayal of the last night of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s  life prior to his assassination in April 1968.
.
.
At the Middle School assembly, students from each grade spoke of important events of the civil rights movement, including the sanitation workers’ strike in Memphis, Emmett Till, sitting campaigns, freedom riders, Bloody Sunday, and Dr. King’s Poor People’s Campaign.
.
.

At the Upper School Assembly, members of Jamaa spoke about the 1619 Project and women in the civil rights movement, including those who were instrumental in beginning Black Lives Matter. On a more personal note, students also spoke of how conversations about race at Collegiate and other schools should not be optional and of the open letter that student s published one year ago in the Collegiate Journal. One Jamaa student who is a senior and will graduate in a few months encouraged 9th, 10th, and 11th graders to keep the momentum going. #collegiatenyc #blackhistorymonth #martinlutherkingjr

  • While working on our pride collab Ella @noonan.photography came up with the brilliant idea of doing a black history month collab! We were able to gather together an amazing team of artists to pull off this collab in less than a week! 🖤🖤It was absolutely amazing to work with such talented people and it was extremely fun to brainstorm over so many ideas. We hope and wish to spread awareness to encourage, support and cheer on the celebrations of black history month!!💫🖤 .

Thank you Dr. King for these wise words and for all you’ve done for our precious country. As we remember you today, your words were a great reminder to trust in my faith. A rough day in the gym is just that. A rough day. Tomorrow is a new one, and with refreshed faith, I will try again💙 .
