  • Whenever I work on isometric holds it helps to identify some mobility issues. After a session yesterday with @chelseywilkens although not bad in the strength department, I need to work more on my psoas mobility... feeling good about L sit strength, now time to open those shoulders up! Too much cooking not enough rolling out 😝 ... captured by my legend @don.eim #makeathletesbetter @underarmour

  • Going to great lengths to get some of my early off-season hockey players moving better and making them aware of imbalances that may predispose them to injury.

In the first clip, the athlete was too quad dominant on his lateral goblet squats. Placing his feet up against the base of the platform basically provided a stopper and forced him to drive his hips back more and engage his glutes, while being cognizant of maintaining a nice rigid torso. Also working on getting him out of such a pronounced anterior pelvic tilt when standing up tall during the transition between squatting to each side.
Second clip provides an interesting view of sumo goblet squats. While things were looking good from a straight up anterior view, this angle shows some issues in terms of both core and lower body stability, as well as shortening on the left side of the torso into the lower back.
area.

All par for the course in the early off-season as we look to get the body back in balance and a big reason why we don't just get into lots of mindless loading right away.

  • We get better at the things that we do. It's simple. You want to be in a better shape? Start moving better, eating better and recovering better. Don't know how? Seek real help.

.
If you want to get better at something, plan a short term goal. As you progress, that short term goal will turn into something sustainable. Then you plan a longer-term goal.

I don't believe in challenges or drastically changing all habits at once. I believe in a progressive road to success. With awareness of your starting point through physiological and physical assessments you can build a strong foundation. Jumping into something too hard too quick often results in failure, disappointment or injuries. Be aware of the complexity of what you will put your body into before entering the next new trend/ challenge. Make sure it's something you will be able to sustain especially diet wise. Your body is the only thing you will ever own. Respect it's needs. Add the good before suppressing anything. .
