  • “When I stopped focussing on what everyone else was telling me to wear and instead focussed on what I loved to wear, and finding those timeless pieces within my own wardrobe, I became much happier with not only how I looked but also how I felt. When fashion is in harmony with you, those things line up so beautifully.”

  • Introducing the Editor’s Diary. In this blog, you’ll find amateur illustrations by yours truly and anecdotes of how I ended up here…

I had quit my full time job and was studying a postgraduate degree when I decided on a whim to pursue makeup artistry... I learned that you really can do whatever you want as long as you trust your own abilities, do your homework, stay open-minded and be willing to take a few risks. You don’t have to be bound by anyone’s preconceptions—not even your own.

In my first post, I wrote about my existential crisis, the vocational monoculture I grew up with, and the Modern Goddess: a woman who lives a life of her own design. Have a read and leave me a comment if you can relate 👑 Link in bio.

  • “The reason I decided to stop working with Victoria’s Secret was I didn’t feel it was an image that was truly reflective of who I am and the kind of message I want to send to young women around the world about what it means to be beautiful. I think that was a pivotal moment in me stepping into my power as a feminist, being able to make my own choices and my own narrative, whether through the companies I choose to work with, or through the image I put out to the world.”

#worldmentalhealthday .

Alone, all by myself in fear of failure
Unable to see who I am, who's my savior
And I don't know why, why I've come here
To the place of condemnation, my existence remains unclear
But I have broken through, through whats enslaved me
Abolish your guilt wall, realization allowed me to be free
And my self confidence has taught me virtues
Your power was my weakness. My weakness was your power
Me...Do they need me? You...Do I need you? .

Man I love early 90’s hardcore and Snapcase are amongst my favourites, I was lucky enough to see them every time they played the U.K. and they never failed to deliver anything but a great time 🙂 The best thing about shows back then was the lack of windmills and karate kicks 😂 As for WMH day, I think everyone has 💩 to deal with and some of us cope better than others, regardless of that, just try to be nice to people, it may make someone’s day and it might make you a better person 🤔

  • When I embarked on a solo trip to Europe in 2017, I arrived in Paris exactly 2 years to the day of the November attacks.

During my wanders, I saw a woman carrying a canvas bag from the lingerie store, Etam. It was emblazoned with the following manifesto: “We are French. We believe in being sexy, independent, fashionable, optimistic”. It was a charmingly accurate representation of French liberté. I was incredibly moved by the resilience of the French people in the face of tragedy.

Looking back on my life, I realised that every experience has made me who I am today. Every heartbreak, disappointment, frustration and mistake has only driven me closer to my truth.

When I quit my uninspiring corporate job, I had no idea what was in store for me. And in retrospect, if I had known how hard it would be, I probably wouldn’t have quit! But I’m so glad that I did because it gave me the impetus to create something that is uniquely my own. Watch this space ✨

If you are like most people, you care very much about what other people think about you. According to research, 55% percent of people believe that their self-worth is often, or always tied to what others think about them 🎭.
👇
This phenomenon is called the “Looking-Glass-Self.”
.
In many cases, we choose to associate ourselves with people whose opinions we value and respect—and we seek approval and validation from them. Their opinions become the basis for how we value ourselves, for our self-acceptance.
.
The problem is that if you base your self-concept on what you believe others think of you, then you will always be vulnerable. Your self-concept will have no true foundation. If the other person is having a good day and responds to you in a friendly, affirming manner, then you feel good 🙋‍💁. If not, you wonder what you did wrong 🙍🙆.

  • Days 41-50 // "Nothing of me is original. I am the combined effort of everyone I've ever known." - #ChuckPalahniuk
In the past 3 years, I’ve made #consciousness and self-awareness my personal mission by trying to decipher the patterns of how I stabilize my identity.
If you’ve heard of #Cooley’s “#LookingGlassSelf” theory, you’re familiar with the concept that we come to ourselves through the interfacing and our interactions with the people in our lives. “I am not who you think I am. I am not who I think I am. I am who I think YOU think I am.” Jason Silva expands upon this beautifully- we emerge as a self by creating a mental model of the other person’s interior world, then furthermore- by creating a mental model of that person’s mental model modeling of us (mouthful!). So in essence, we create our identity by building these bridges with the kinds of people we connect with. We adjust our sense of ‘self’ depending on who we spend time with.
Lately, it seems like #JimRohn’s words – we are the average of the 5 people we spend most of our time with – keep popping up everywhere for me. I find myself paying attention to the people I spend my time with. I’m selective with who I choose to invite in my life. And the past few weeks have felt a bit chaotic with the intensity of connecting with so many people and all the activity with art. I've felt lost and #disconnected from my identity for days now. When those days become weeks and weeks become months...you end up at a place in life where you never saw on your maps. It’s time to seek out an oasis.
Few years ago, I discovered my love for the #mountains. I think they have a way of humbling you. For the past 3 years, every time I’ve felt overwhelmed with life’s impassioned unfoldings, I’ve seeked solitude through my hikes in the mountains in the gregarious environment to allow myself to move beyond my ‘self’ – to exceed myself. Feeling this need to disconnect (again), I’m headed to Aspen on Sunday. To watch my tetherings and anchors implode and lead me to a calmer journey when I return. #100DayPaintingByJVyas #The100DayProject #100daypaintingbyjennyvyas

  • Every single one of us struggles between the world we carry within ourselves and the world that we live in out there with others. Most of us are constantly trying to build a bridge to connect those two worlds through our work, art, experiences... Work that ends up being self-improving or self-destructive. Something I'm ruminating over these days- how do we transcend into a more dimensional sense of belonging to ourselves more than the outer world? How do we gently correct our sense of who we truly are from the self we've created for others based upon what we THINK they see in us? Because we all know, there's a vast difference between the two. #lookingglassself
🖤
“This collision between one’s image of oneself and what one actually is is always very painful and there are two things you can do about it, you can meet the collision head-on and try and become what you really are or you can retreat and try to remain what you thought you were, which is a fantasy, in which you will certainly perish.” — #JamesBaldwin #indentitypolitics #mirrormirror 🖤

  • Thought for the day courtesy of Charles Horton Cooley.
.
Who is Charles Horton Cooley? I had to google him. BTW: I never post a quote from someone without finding out who they are. Words are important, but who they come from is equally important.
.
Charles Horton Cooley was an American Sociologist. He is best known for this "looking glass self" theory. According to Wikipedia: "...the concept of the looking-glass self expresses the tendency for one to understand oneself through their own understanding of the perception which others may hold of them. This process is theorized to develop one's sense of identity. Therefore identity, or self, is the result of learning to see ourselves as others do."
.
Knowing a little something about Charles Horton Cooley really enriched this quote for me. Does it do the same for you?
