Just finished “The Wall”, the last novel by John Lanchester who recently made me engrossed in his “Capital”. I cannot recommend this book to anybody due to the sucking feeling of hopelessness and despair that it leaves the reader with. The narration is full of long but juicy descriptions of weather, feelings of the main hero and again, a feeling of the complete end of the world.
But anyway, the thing I want to share is an idea, which is maybe one of the most burning and topical nowadays.
It is the world after the global ecological catastrophe. The sea level has gone so high that no beach is left in the world. The UK built The Wall (that’s how the book got its name) but mostly to defend the island not from water but from other people coming to the survived land. All these immigrants are called Others and if one dares to come close to the wall he would be shot by hundreds of soldiers carrying their shifts under nasty Britain rains on The Wall. It’s impossible for citizens to avoid the 2-years job on The Wall — both men and woman should carry their duties. And they fail and let the Others come to the country they will...no, not shot, but put to the water to replace the Others.
All the citizens have ID-chips, nobody wants to have children due to the scarce resources, the flights can be afforded only by rich people. Agricultural work is made by robots and drones, while house chores in rich families — by ”Help”, slaves from Others who were caught on The Wall. The generation born after the catastrophe hates their predecessors for such a gift, despises the parents and make the reader think 🤔 What if our children face such a Change?

  • Had to stop our trip in a haste, looking back and already missing those times that only belonged to us three.
