  • Photographer Eric Kim wrote about his understanding of the art of street photos, based on his personal experience.
I think street photography is an art - both in terms of how you shoot, how you walk along the streets, and how the photos look.
For example, I would like to see a street photo with something like a walk-meditation. Shooting a street photo is a quiet walk with a camera in hand, enjoying the surrounding city, the people around you, the feeling of the sidewalk under your feet.
But not only that. When I take a street photo I like to turn off my mind. I turn off the phone, do not listen to music or podcasts. I try to clear my mind as much as possible, so I can’t let the things around me litter my head. It helps to feel better what is happening around me, and also gives more chances to find good “crucial moments” in shooting.
I try to be “inside” a street photo when I disconnect a creature from my body and mind. When the camera becomes a continuation of the body, I just take pictures on instincts, in my gut, without thinking.
In fact, you do not want to think when shooting a street photo. You need to turn off the brain during shooting and use it only when you go home and choose the best shots. Even the poet Horace urged his friend not to think when he wrote poetry - because it is impossible to do two things at the same time.
