  • They bumped into each other, and I expected Petrojvic to just be touchy touchy and move along but instead they patted their heads and sat like this 🥺
.
There's research that leeches feel good when with each other so I hope Wormson feels comforted since lately they've been feeling under the weather, Petrojvic is still robust thankfully to keep Wormson company.

  • The new tank set up. It's round to accommodate for how leeches would bump into the corners of a square tank. Also last shots is Petrojvic going into loaf mode after swimming for 10 minutes.

  • Just the sight of these leeches may invoke feelings of panic and disgust but a new exhibit at the Royal Ontario Museum is exploring the biology and use of these bloodsucking creatures.
•
The interactive exhibit Bloodsuckers: Legends to Leeches opens this weekend and will feature over 30,000 species including birds, moths and other animals that feed on blood.
•
Doug Currie, senior curator of entomology at the ROM, aims to have the exhibit give people the information they need to live "in harmony" with bloodsuckers.
•
Sebastian Kvist, the exhibit’s curator of invertebrates, said that when leeches get stressed out while feeding, they can vomit some of the blood back into the open wound.
•
"It'll bring with it a bit of bacteria, normally, and so you can get a minor infection from it," he said.
•
"A really good way of stressing a leech is pouring salt or lemon on it or burning it with a cigarette butt, so we tell people not to do that anymore."
•
Kvist recommends using a fingernail or a credit card to break the seal between the leech's mouth and your skin quickly, "so it doesn't have time to regurgitate blood." •
Leeches are not known to transmit any diseases to humans.

  • Check out this beautiful array of leeches, many of which are new to science!
These lovely parasites belong to the family Glossiphoniidae, a group of freshwater leeches which parasitise fish, reptiles, and invertebrates. However, the leeches pictures here were all found parasitising freshwater mussels!

  • In my medical field we call organisms like these #leeches and #parasites.

Shame on Nigerians. Here is your number 1 #slavemaster.

  • The Kinabalu Giant Leech is one ferocious creature. Running down long and soft invertebrates such as earthworms, they proceed to start at the head. Slowly, the entire prey will be swallowed, leaving no trace of the tussle. Growing past half a meter long, this is one terrifying beast. Fortunately, this leech only lives high above on Mount Kinabalu, where it feasts in peace.

  • What happens when leeches and crustaceans mix? While these parasites need soft tissue, lobsters/crayfish have a hard exoskeleton. Unfortunately, that means that this flexible invertebrate must squeeze through the creases to attach to the host. Thank gosh this arthropod seems to already be deceased.
