- Built between 312 BC and 244 BC, the Via Appia was the first Roman road, and the prototype for all that followed. It was named after Appius Claudius Pulcher (the Blind), who first started the work on it when he was consul.
It was initially built to aid armies get to conflict zones quicker, first heading to Capua then being extended to Brindisi.
The first sight people arriving from Southern Italy would see would be like after mile of tombs, many belonging to wealthy Roman families and often trying to outdo each other in grandeur. It was illegal to bury the dead within the sacred boundary of Rome, as it was believed that it would offend the gods, so they were buried along the roads leading out of Rome.
The next sight would be the grey smog hanging over the city of Rome - pollution from all of the workshops.
The landscape hasn't changed a great deal in 2,500 years.
On Sundays the road is closed to traffic and you can hire a bicycle to drive the length of it, and it is surrounded by public parks and archaeological sites. The Parco degli Aquedotti is also nearby.

- Since Salerno is very close to Naples, pizza for dinner felt like the only option. This fluffy, charred capricciosa with olives, ham, salami, mozza and tomato sauce is among the best I’ve ever had. Enjoyed at Pizzeria Sorbillo, founded in 1935, and as it happened just next to our hotel.
