  • Don't experience an improvement in mood, energy or sleep during your Week 1 (period week) or Week 2 (the week leading up to including ovulation) despite rising estrogen? In fact, do you feel the *opposite* on these cycle days: Are you sad, irritable, foggy-headed, lethargic, anxious and have difficulty sleeping? Your problem could be that you're low in iron.

Here's why: When you bleed during your period, you naturally lose some of this essential mineral. Thing is, iron is needed to help the brain create serotonin—a chemical that impacts mood, sleep and other processes. Plus, iron helps send energizing oxygen throughout the body and brain, which plays a key role in how much mental and physical energy you have.

When your iron level dips—even a little—you could suffer symptoms that kind of feel like PMS.

Are you eating iron-rich foods or taking an iron supplement, yet still feel these bothersome symptoms? You might not be taking enough iron. Or you could be taking iron at the "wrong" time. Some supplements, foods and beverages (such as black tea and calcium) can block the absorption of iron, which means you may not be getting the full recommended daily 18 mg.

Do you have heavy menstrual bleeding? This means you're losing even more iron than usual.

My advice: Talk to your healthcare provider about taking iron supplements or increasing your iron intake via the right foods at the right times. (A registered dietitian can help you with this part.) If you have a genetic condition called hemochromatosis, you can't take iron so talk with your healthcare provider about other options.

  • Getting iron levels up is hard enough for women, but especially pregnant women, as iron needs are 1.5x higher.

This is something I have had to monitor and manage throughout my pregnancy and definitely before I was pregnant.

As a former vegetarian and having hashimotos, my iron has always run on the lower side.  But ever since I started to include animal protein it has made a huge difference in how I feel and function.
Through both animal and some plant foods, and taking a quality supplement daily - I have really helped my levels get to a reasonably healthy level.
Other ways to boost iron levels:
🍳Cook in a cast iron pan
🍊Eating citrus with any iron containing foods to help absoption
💊Take an iron supplement containing iron bisglycinate

  • Hablemos hoy del ROM (“Range of Motion”) Estas siglas hacen referencia al rango de movimiento de nuestros ejercicios, teniendo en cuenta que hablamos dentro de un contexto de ejercicios anaeróbicos con cargas de peso. A menudo no se tiene en cuenta esta variable que al igual que otras como el TUT del que hablamos en otro post tiene una importancia relevante dentro de nuestros entrenamientos. Es importante realizar un rango de movimiento completo en nuestros ejercicios para poder beneficiarnos totalmente de nuestros entrenamientos, realizar rangos de movimientos completos nos reportara en grandes beneficios entre los cuales podemos encontrar:

1) Articulaciones más saludables: Al mover una articulación a lo largo de todo su rango de movimiento, los ligamentos y los tendones también trabajarán para estirarse y contraerse. Esto estimulará las vías de recuperación para reforzar esos tejidos y fortalecerlos.
2) Reduce los desequilibrios en la fuerza muscular
3) Mayor desarrollo muscular: El tiempo bajo tensión (TUT) aumentará y se requerirán más unidades motoras.
4) Mejora de la Movilidad: Al trabajar en rangos completos de movimiento, se tensarán menos los tejidos blandos (músculos, ligamentos, tendones, etc.) Produciendo mayor movilidad articular.
5) Menor riesgo de lesión: Cuándo un músculo es fuerte en toda su amplitud, se encuentra mejor desarrollado lo cual disminuye el riesgo de lesión8
