  • From the website city-data dot com: In 1796, the Connecticut Land Company sent US General Moses Cleaveland to survey the Western Reserve, a half-million acre tract of land in northeastern Ohio (at the time called New Connecticut). General Cleaveland platted a townsite on Lake Erie at the mouth of the Cuyahoga River (Native American term for “crooked river” due to the unusual U-shape that causes it to flow both north and south). In laying out the townsite, Cleaveland used the New England style town-square layout. The settlement was abandoned when dysentery and insects drove Cleaveland and company back to New England. The eventual taming of the Western Reserve wilderness has been credited to Lorenzo Carter, who returned to General Cleaveland's original townsite in 1799. Carter, a man of ability and great stature, brought stability to the primitive setting, established friendly relations with the Native Americans in the area, and revived the settlement, naming it after its founder. The current spelling of the name can be traced to a newspaper editor who dropped the first "a" from Cleaveland in order to fit the name on the newspaper masthead. Cleveland's geographic position as a port on Lake Erie made it ideally situated for developments in transportation, industry, and commerce. By 1813 the port was receiving shipments from the cities in the East, and the city was chosen as the northern terminus of a canal system connecting the Ohio River and Lake Erie (completed in 1832). Cleveland was incorporated in 1836 as its population increased dramatically, telegraph lines were installed in 1847, and the opening of the Soo Canal in 1855, as well as the arrival of the railroad further strengthened Cleveland's position as a transportation center (city-data.com, “Cleveland” 2019).

  • If you regularly travel through the infamous "Split," you may already know that there's a big, costly modification project taking place there - and you've likely experienced a fair share of traffic headaches because of it. But approximately how long will the construction take to complete, and what can drivers expect to see? Find out answers to those questions and watch a short video at the #linkinbio.

This photo by @robin.rudd.56 shows Interstate 24 as its westbound traffic passes Eastgate. Tennessee Department of Transportation Commissioner Clay Bright, along with state and local elected officials, visited the I-75/I-24 interchange modification project in Chattanooga, Hamilton County on Tuesday, October 15, 2019.

  • The cornbread kingpin strikes again, as Cracker Barrel acquires Maple Street Biscuit.
🍞 👑
As part of the acquisition, Maple Street -- a quirky Jacksonville, Florida-based fast-casual chain with 33 locations -- will absorb Cracker Barrel’s previously acquired Holler & Dash Biscuit House locations.

Biscuits + maple… Mmmmm.
The country-style breakfast boss has been making serious moves

The Maple Street buyout comes just months after Cracker Barrel invested up to $140m for a noncontrolling stake in Punch Bowl Social, an “eatertainment” (oh yes) chain with strong recent growth.
It could be a smart diversification play, given the rise of the experience economy -- and gaining a competitive edge is key in the increasingly saturated fast-casual restaurant market.
Recently, Cracker Barrel has seen a 0.7% dip in traffic, but it expects to flip the pancake -- I mean, decline -- through these recent investments.

  • Daily dose....
The Blood Orange season is short. It runs from July to October. Since July, I’ve been drinking this fresh juice every day. And I must say, I’m feeling really well ! For those of you who know me, I never give out health / nutrition information. I leave that for health professionals.
But I was recently reading that Blood Oranges apparently contain higher levels of antioxidants than berries.
I have secured a very large supply of this magical citrus for this year @redbellycitrus And it’s such a pleasure working directly with these lovely growers.
Ready for your summer drinks and cocktails @thecanberradistillery coming up - @bowerbird.au November 1 - 3
@handmadecanberra Dec 6 - 8
