  • Kick imposter syndrome to the curb! That awful feeling that you don't belong, or aren't good enough in your profession. It's true, you can. How do I know? Because I have. I used to have so much self doubt and be so insecure, but not anymore. I believe that imposter syndrome disproportionately affects women. And I'm trying to help. I'm reformatting my weekly newsletter to include a tip that's worked for me to improve my confidence and help me overcome imposter syndrome. Sign up today - link in bio - to get the first one today.

  • Writing a book is hard. That sounds obvious, but it's not so much the content as the size of the project. I've never worked on anything before that was so big, takes so long and is so completely mine. It would be so easy to get stuck, paralysed before even beginning, bogged down in the enormity of it.
So right at the start I decided to break it down into steps. This year, I am aiming to write one chapter, which is about 8,000 words, a month. With a couple of months off for science festivals and holidays, that will mean I have the bones of the book written by the end of the year, giving me a few months next year to go back through what I have written and make it better.

It's not been easy, but so far I'm on track. I'm nearly halfway through my words, and my chapters. It has really helped me knowing that what I am writing right now isn't the finished thing. It doesn't matter if its not great right now- that's what next year is for.

This year is about getting things down, doing the research and the interviews and writing some words. Words that will do. Words that are good enough. This has been really helping- allowing me to move on even when I'm not happy with what I have written, and stopping me from going down the never-ending hole of 'just reading one more paper'. Because I know I can come back and sort it out later.

Is this the right approach? I don't know- I've never done this before! What I know is that I am not a last minute person- I'm slow & steady, little by little- partly because of my illness, but also because of my personality. I'm an anti-procrastinator, and I hate feeling like I'm up against a deadline. So I'm hoping this will avoid a mad panic at the end, when the deadline is looming. Will it work? Ask me again next May.
But for now, I'll just keep writing. Writing something, even if it doesn't feel good enough. Even if I feel like I don't know enough or haven't done enough research. And when I do have a confidence wobble, and wonder if I can do this, my @hana.ayoob laptop sticker is there to remind me- I'm a #BadassScienceLady and I'm writing a Badass Science Book!

  • Fresh off the press! 🗞 First paper as Dr Shu! Super excited to be a part of this work on metabolic regulation in the retina. In this paper, we silenced a gene that is important in regulating mitochondrial health and it did some crazy things to the retina! 🤪 👀 Link to paper in profile too! http://www.life-science-alliance.org/content/2/3/e201800212
