  • The Walt Disney Company’s $71.3bn takeover of most of 20th Century Fox is a gigantic deal, the business equivalent of a sex scene between Alien and Predator – and Fox’s Alien and Predator products are included in the purchase, along with James Cameron’s Avatar franchise and many other lucrative properties. It is estimated that the merge gives Disney control of 40% of all theatrical box office and puts it in a position to take on the digital streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon and Apple. (Incidentally, the deal includes a commitment to offer to buy 100% of Britain’s Sky TV.
.
.
The deal also adds the superheroes X-Men, Deadpool and the Fantastic Four to the Disney fold – where they could conceivably slot into the Marvel Cinematic Universe; Disney also gets series like Planet of the Apes and will also acquire the original 1977 Star Wars, Episode Four: A New Hope. In addition to that it gets Fox’s regional sports networks, dozens of big TV properties like The Simpsons, Family Guy and Modern Family and the enormous Star India channel.

It’s an almost cartoon-like demonstration of alpha-capitalism: diversity and differentness mushed together into a great big monopolistic blob. Source: The Guardian

  • 📽 One Show Only: Human Flow⠀
3/24, 2 PM⠀
⠀
Ai Weiwei’s film captures the lives of people displaced from their homes. In a statement, the film’s director said, "Human Flow is a personal journey, an attempt to understand the conditions of humanity in our days. The film is made with deep belief in the value of human rights. In this time of uncertainty, we need more tolerance, compassion, and trust for each other since we all are one. Otherwise, humanity will face an even bigger crisis."⠀
⠀
UICA will extend the dialogue with a panel discussion after the screening. The panel will include experts, educators, and entrepreneurs – each with a strong tie to the topic of refugees and migrants. ⠀

The madman returns with another boundary-pushing assault on the senses–go to the cinema for this one, you’ll rave with him or run out screaming.
𝐸𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑉𝑜𝑖𝑑 director @gasparnoeofficial uses the adrenaline of controversy like no other, maybe only rivaling his Danish counterpart, Lars Von Trier, bringing us the festival of fear that is 𝐶𝐿𝐼𝑀𝐴𝑋. There is nothing to compare it to other than his own work; I so far have referred to it as a threesome between 𝑆𝑡𝑒𝑝 𝑈𝑝, 𝐶𝑎𝑟𝑟𝑖𝑒, and 𝐸𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑉𝑜𝑖𝑑. Following the disco credit intro, we’re led in with this very human, “school dance” type atmosphere, complete with horny conversation, spiked punch, and a dance floor, cranking up the decibels with the same pace it takes LSD to escalate. Picture a hand and fingers slowly raising the bass knob of a ghettoblaster stereo playing a ferocious list of dance tracks.
We’re introduced to a mostly French dance troupe through a series of interviews displayed on this retro TV set, competing for limited spots on a team headed for The US. Stacked around the tv, in focus, are all the inspirations Noé pulls from, paying colorful homage to the blend of influences that are about to be seen. Dario Argento’s 𝑆𝑢𝑠𝑝𝑖𝑟𝑖𝑎, David Lynch’s 𝐸𝑟𝑎𝑠𝑒𝑟ℎ𝑒𝑎𝑑, (also known as 𝐿𝑎𝑏𝑦𝑟𝑖𝑛𝑡ℎ 𝑀𝑎𝑛) etc.

The styles of dance represented are strange and compelling, a savage blend of vogueing, krumping, tutting, bone breaking, etc that we’re put together by Noé and choreographer, Nina McNeely. The most impressive sequence is the opening 6 minute take, highlighting and foreshadowing everyone’s individual talent and energy.

As the paranoid trip of “who drugged who” grows into a nightmare, Noé plays with our mind through impressive but nauseating camera work that quickly arrives in Hell and crescendos in primal fashion. The color palette unifies Noé’s body of work and he’s at full force here, playing with neon silhouettes throughout.
