  • Édouard Manet, A Bar at the Folies-Bergère, 1882, Oil on canvas, 96 x 130 cm, Courtauld Gallery, London.
Édouard Manet, 1832-1883, broke new ground by defying traditional techniques and by choosing subjects from the events and circumstances of his own time. He developed a style, creating form not through a gradual blending of tones, but with discrete areas of color side by side. Manet's embrace of what Baudelaire termed the "heroism of modern life" and his bold manner with paint inspired the future impressionists. Manet presented A Bar at the Folies-Bergère at the 1882 Paris Salon exhibition just one year before his death. The Folies-Bergère was a variety-show venue where the upper middle class of Paris came to see a wide array of entertainment, including ballet, cabaret, acrobatics, pantomime, operetta, and animal acts. Manet made a number of sketches at the venue, but actually painted the work in his studio. The central female figure, leaning on a marble countertop, was modelled by a girl called Suzon, who worked as a barmaid at the venue. There are bottles of champagne, a vase with flowers, a bowl with clementines and bottles of beer on the countertop. Much has been written about this work, about Suzon’s facial expression for example. Is she sad, tired, indifferent or just a bit absent minded? And then there is the incorrect depiction of the reflections in the mirror that runs the entire length of the background. Suzon’s reflection is shifted all the way to the right. It appears she is serving a male customer. Does this mean Manet wanted us to be the stand-in of the customer? The work was bought by English industrialist Samuel Courtauld who founded The Courtauld Gallery in 1932. Because of a renovation project at the London gallery the work is part of a travelling exhibition. At present it can be seen at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum.
