  • November 14th is also #WorldDiabetesDay, AND coincidentally my company just launched their new (mostly) blue uniforms during #DiabetesAwarenessMonth. ๐Ÿ’™

This is my tenth year with diabetes and my first as a flight attendant with it, and the last ten months as a flight attendant with this disease have definitely been the hardest.
The symptoms diabetics have when their sugars are high (or low) already suck - but high altitudes amplify that and make it 100x worse.
I actually have had to be removed from a trip once because I couldnโ€™t stop vomiting after a 50-minute flight with a high blood sugar. My blood sugar was โ€œonlyโ€ 320, which is something I have no problem with handling on the ground, but after 50 mins in the air from SEA to GEG, my symptoms had worsened so much that it made me too nauseous and unable to function.
This just happened this summer, but now I have an insulin pump (pictured) AND a CGM that help me regulate and keep track of my sugars so much better!
So if you see anyone with one of these on their waist, in their pocket, or in their hands, theyโ€™re diabetic! (Currently you canโ€™t see mine because Iโ€™m usually wearing a cardigan with my uniform that covers it.) And weโ€™re fighting low sugars, high sugars, headaches, nausea, excessive hunger & thirst, site changes, painful injection sites, finger pricks, expensive insulin and supply prices, plus so much more, more often than you think.
But none of us are ever not trying.
If you know a diabetic, give them a hug today! ๐Ÿ’™ And for those of you that wore blue today, (whether you had a choice or not ๐Ÿ˜‰) thank you!
