  • Hoof building work for Repo this morning. I walk him in his boots from one comfortable surface to another as we have unavoidable areas of stoney, rough ground on the yard, but then he works his hooves on softer surfaces barefoot.

His schedule until next Friday includes these daily proprioception, strength and resilience building slow work on different surfaces (indoor, outdoor arenas, grass, smooth tarmac) and short trotwork indoors.
Next re-assessment with @hoofologylucy on Friday 29th March 💪🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻 #nofootnohorse #equinebiomechanics #barefootperformance #barefoottransition #hoofcare #exracehorse #reporehabstory

  • The last few days have been busy! SWIPE to see our Barn Makeover progress! 🙌🏻😍 •

Dixie’s due date is coming up fast! We started our Barn Makeover to get her ready! We also went and picked up our first round of square bales for her. She’s getting stalled next week until 30 days after she has her foal so if anyone has ideas to keep Boss Mare from getting bored, let us know! 😘 •

We got the barn cleaned up and moved some things around and started building our new tack area. I think this was definitely a Pinterest Win! 🙌🏻 We’re using the current pallet temporarily until we can get the full tack pallet built. •

We also laid down 6 TONS of gravel and leveled it out. We did the entrance to the barn, walk way around the feed bins, our tack area, stall 1, and leveled out stall 2. We just have to get mats, this week, for stalls 1 and 3. Once the rain lets up and the horse’s entrance to the barn dries up, we’re going to be scraping it and putting down about 15 tons more to help prevent mud so their walk way is dry. But that’s another project for another day 😂 •

  • Day 21 of Repo’s barefoot transition and the start of work.
20min of a look at his paces and comfort levels on arena surface today in walk & trot. I’m very happy with how he moves at the moment. There’s a significant change in front limb movement in that he doesn’t show any tripping or incoordination he showed when shod. There is also a more pleasing harmony to his movement with greater suppleness already which makes me feel very excited for his future journey to sounder, happier life.

Stay tuned 😁 and keep everything crossed 😁

  • A nice movie we got in from Verhoeven klauwverzorging. Father and son both hoof trimmers in this family business. One 800-1 and a SA0051 working together, both delivered by CowCare. The setup is good made, if you watch the movie you see a second SA51 standing in the left corner. Thanks Rob for sharing this movie!

More info about the 800-1 here: http://tinyurl.com/y49ufkob

  • Better 4 Hooves ingredients:

Biotin – is a B complex vitamin that can be present in the diet but only at minimum quantities, the level published to improve hoof horn and quality is significantly higher. Previously Biotin had been used singularly but further research has shown that Biotin can reach it’s maximum effect when combined alongside other nutrients.
Better 4 Hooves packs in a whooping 35mg per daily serving, the optimum amount required.

  • I am going to start posting some trimming related images here. It's scary as anything because #hooftrimming has got to be the most controversial horse related topic, and by posting pictures I'm opening myself up to a lot of potential critiscm. But, my mission in life is to be a bit more brave all the time, so here goes.

Obviously still a long way to go on this hoof, but I love tracking progress. It is the right hind hoof of a TB mare, and this is the difference with 4 trims on a 7 - 8 week schedule.

My preferred schedule is 3-5 weeks, but this is not possible for every horse owner.

This hoof has evidence of a massive abscess bursting not long before her first trim, which has drastically affected the lateral (outside) bar/heel area, and will be an ongoing management issue until fully grown out.
This horse also hadn't had any #hoofcare for numerous years until the current owner came into the picture late last year, so all things considered she's now doing very well. She has been sound the whole time.

I would welcome any questions or comments, I love talking hooves and I still have so much to learn!

Anyone interested in learning more about hooves and trimming I'd highly recommend finding @davidlandreville on Facebook.

  • PUTTING TOGETHER THE PUZZLE

Hooves tell a story; some have a short one to tell, some are more like War and Peace. Either way, they help with piecing together a puzzle that goes deeper than hooves alone.

I look how a horse walks, stands, holds up their feet. I look at all the structures in the hoof and take a mental note of anything out of the ordinary, any changes from previous trims. Anything I didn’t expect to see. One structure suddenly becoming more pronounced versus the other ones, different wear patterns, different sized, shaped or angled opposite hooves, how diagonal hooves compare, changes to the hooves due to compensatory loading.

I ask you questions about any changes since I’ve last seen you. All those questions about what surface your horse stands on, turnout, when you last wormed your horse, if there’s a foot s/he finds difficult to pick up. I really welcome you telling me anything, and it doesn’t need to be in the foot. It could be shoulders, back, stomach, or even the poll. Behavioural changes are always a significant puzzle piece. Diet is the major one. Please tell me about those little details you have noticed!

I take trim notes after every trim, noting down anything of interest. “No changes” is of interest too. I take pictures of the hooves, and I look at these afterwards, and then again before the next trim, to remind me where we were at six weeks ago. The pictures also allow me to go back and follow developments, expected ones and unexpected ones.

All these things can give us an early warning sign to act, change and adapt something. They could give me the chance to recommend a physio/bodyworker having a look. Or simply show in a few months’ time how far you and your horse have come.

This is what holistic hoof care is all about – not just each hoof in isolation, but all four hooves in correlation to each other; not just the foot or leg, but the WHOLE horse, inside and out, as well as the environment it lives in. All playing together to make up the puzzle that is each and every individual horse.
