  • This forest in Norway felt much older and different than the ones I'm used to in the States. It reminded me of the old ways, when people still believed in the creatures that lurk in the dark.
One in particular that's always fascinated me is the Huldra. Also called Huldre and Skogsfru, meaning "lady of the forest," the Huldra are forest dwelling female creatures. Similar to sirens or nymphs, they are known for luring men into the forest, sometimes to bless them, sometimes to curse them. They are usually depicted as beautiful blonde women with the tail of a cow and are associated with living underground. Sometimes they look like milkmaids or farmers. Not dissimilar to other creatures like tomte, faeries, and the like, they are also associated with helping humans, if treated kindly. It's interesting that the root word is related to "hidden" or "secret," which reminds us of the Sídhe and Tuatha Dé Danann, who are also known to be hidden from humans, but capable of interfering in our lives. In fact, it is very likely that the Huldra and other similar Scandinavian creatures are simply manifestations of what appears to be a universal, hidden creature common to nearly all mythology and folklore: dwelling in nature, hidden to humanity, and choosing to interact in both positive and negative ways when provoked. The similarities between countless cultures around the world are both shocking and unsurprising to me. This is just one other example of how the archetypal human story has evolved due to geography, landscape, language, and culture.
It should also be noted that Huldra are likely related to the Germanic Holda, also called Frau Holle, who is likely a folkloric version of the Germanic fertility goddess Holle. I will do another post just for Holle, but for now I'll say that the connections between this goddess and the forest creature, while they may seem like a stretch, would speak to the vast interconnectedness between these cultures, as well as the seemingly universal patterns of human belief.

⁣She fascinates me endlessly and I honour her in all her forms, in my work, in my house, in the forest, her home. She holds a special place during Winter time. At Yule she was served as a special guest at our table.⁣

⁣“I have turned, in contrast, to folk-customs and folk-legends and I claim that the material has allowed me to discern the clearly defined form of potent female forces, imperious Ladies f the Woodland, who found their origin at a very early stage of social development. More specifically I assert:⁣
⁣1.The female forces, here discussed, are indeed divinities. ⁣
⁣2. Behind the many local manifestations we may recognise one basic form with vivid characteristics. ⁣
⁣3. These forces belong to a widely diffused type: they developed from guardians of nature and of animals, found among hunting civilisations, into a more complex godhead, and resemble in this development the ‘Lady of Wild Beasts’ of ancient civilisations. (…)⁣
⁣To affirm the claim of divine stature (i.e. that people had faith in these figures) I point to the following: The anger and ordinances of the church.”⁣

  • Perchtenlauf & Distaff day
Marking the end of the Jultide (Weihnachten) is "St Distaff day." A day when women and spinners can resume their craft. As it was said that one must finish all work in progress before the Weihnachten as this was reserved for rest and celebration. So alas on the final day and proceeding forward we resume on January 7.
St Distaff day has come to be known as an "unofficial Catholic holiday" as surely there is no "St Distaff." Many may wonder where this concept of halting spinning during the holiday and then resuming on January 7th comes from?
The answer being is that this is a custom that is a Germanic folk tradition actually stemming from pre-Christian times.
Frau Holda(Holle) or as she is known in the Alpine regions Frau Perchta was a goddess associated with spinning and such domestic arts. Holle was also associated with witchcraft and the Wild Hunt. It was said that she lead a procession of women (Hexen) who mounted distaffs and brooms to fly through the sky.
One can also note another custom commonly associated with the end of Jultide is the Perchtenlauf which takes place on the night of January 6. Many folk would leave out offerings of fish, gruel or dumplings in honour of and to appease Frau Perchta and the Hexen. #stdistaffsday #stdistaff #perchtenlauf #holda #frauholle #distaff #witchcraft #traditionalwitchcraft #hexerei #witchesofinstagram #heidentum #folkways #heathenism #jul #jultide #yule #weihnachten

  • In honor of all the #wittywomen in the world, I started this January 6th with a bowl of oatmeal cream with apple, raisins and cinnamon. Some salt, a hint of sugar. And shared it with mother #Earth.
Before Christianity, this was a day with a different kind of #Epiphany. #Holda. #Perchta. And many other Ladies in white. Witty women. One part of the year old hag, the other a shining maiden.

Will you get coins or coal for the work you've done? Are the results what you hoped for?

May the Earth calm down and men wisen up. May we regain proper balance between life and death, stillness and movement. We could do so much better.

Berkano is the rune of the Goddess, the Earth Mother Nerthus, Frigg, Berchta and Holda, among others. It is the rune of creation and birth, healing and the womb. 49 years ago today my own mother gave birth for which I am ever grateful, as I am grateful to all the matrilineal ancestors who came before her. Hail to all the mother goddesses everywhere. And thanks for all the birthday wishes from everyone throughout this day!

Rito 🔮
Acenda a vela.

Acenda a vela.

We are officially Spring Equinox.
A point of perfect balance on the journey through the Wheel of the Year. Night and day are of equal length and in perfect equilibrium – dark and light, masculine and feminine, inner and outer, in balance.

The natural world is coming alive and the year is now waxing. The sun is gaining in strength and the days are becoming longer and warmer. The abundant fertility of Earth is represented by what we call “Ostara”
💐🐥
It is officially the first day of Spring!
Ostara takes its name after the Germanic goddess, Eostre/Ostara, who was traditionally honoured in the month of April with festivals to celebrate fertility, renewal and re-birth. It was from #Eostre that the Christian celebration of Easter evolved ( or was hijiacked) and indeed the naming of the hormone Eostrogen, essential to women’s fertility. The Goddess Ostara has the shoulders and head of a hare. The Symbols of Ostara are:
💐
The Hare
In Celtic tradition, the hare is sacred to the Goddess and is the totem animal of lunar goddesses such as #Hecate, #Freyja and #Holda – the hare is a symbol for the moon.

I had such a wonderful time today.. me and my best ladyfriend organize a temple in honor of the Lady every season. It is more ceremonial than the womens circles that I throw alone. Less talking and more about sinking in that deep feminine energy, feeling, intuition, oracles, meditation, connection to the ancestors and so much more.... it was a wonderful edition this time where we touched Frau Holle, played and practised with different ways of oracles such as runes and the crystal ball which turned out to be very fascinating!
