Opulent candlelit bubble baths? Manicures? Pedicures? Long delightful walks in beautiful scenery? Massages? Always wearing a splash of expensive perfume or aftershave? Reading a book on a sunny beach?

Sure, these things could be part of self-care but it’s not just treats and indulgences.

Daily self-care is a commitment to yourself, a discipline that often takes determination to place as a priority.

Self-care is about understanding what you need and is very much driven by respecting and honouring both yourself and the people you share your life with.

Self-care is drinking enough water, eating healthy food, having the right amount of activity and movement, getting enough sleep. It’s about going to bed at a wise and sensible time, even if you’d much rather watch the next episode of that gripping TV show.

Self-care is taking time to include fun and lightness in your life.

Self-care is ensuring your needs are cared for on every level. Physical, emotional, spiritual, recreational.

Self-care is whatever you choose it to be.

But make no mistake, self-care takes thought and commitment.

What small changes could you make in your life to maintain, or bring in more, caring for you?

It’s something that’s easy to overlook and yet you will reap so many incredible benefits when you care for you.

When I was 19 my world turned upside down with an incurable leukaemia diagnosis and I spent many subsequent years sitting with my mortality and thoughts of dying being a very really part of my life, alongside losing friends too young to cancer.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
All of this built a layer of gratitude for life on a deep level. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Honestly, my diagnosis has been the blessing of my life. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

It’s forced me to go inwards and sort out my values & passions. All of this reflection and inner work, along with my lived life experiences are why I am so passionate about living my life in a way that feels good and right for me because simply put, I’ve faced the prospect of not being here. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

  • Would you like to be happier?

Gratitude can do that. Neuroscience has revealed that gratitude literally rewires your brain to be happier.

Turns out gratitude isn’t a new-age fad but, instead, causes the brain to be optimistic and compassionate.

Not only that, it has a positive impact on appetite and sleep AND it releases dopamine, a pleasure hormone, which promotes feelings of self-worth and compassion for others.

But watch out, there’s a catch.

Turns out, to benefit from all of this good stuff, you have to be open and willing to express gratitude.

There are three main things that you can do every day to grow your gratitude.

1. Write a list of three things you’re grateful for.

2. Tell the people in your life what you appreciate about them.

3. Reflect on the qualities you like in you or on something that you have recently achieved.

Yes, daily!

Just imagine how your life would be if your consistent automatic default was closer to positivity, confidence and joy. Also known as happiness.

  • I used to absolutely rip myself apart in my mind. 👹 ⁠⠀

I'd compare myself to everyone else in every sense of the way. I was beyond stuck in comparisonitis!!⁠ ⠀⁠⠀
How I looked, the shape of my body, the house I lived in, the car I drove. The career I built, the amount of money I had, the level of success I had created.⠀⁠⠀
⠀⁠⠀
Louise Hay changed my life in SO many ways, but there's one thing she said that had the most profound effect on my thoughts: "STOP saying negative things about yourself. Just stop." It was as simple as that. Just stop. 🤚⠀⁠⠀
And so I did. Once I cleared all the negative thinking out of my mind, I finally had room to dream. Room to create. Room to BE.⁠ ⠀⁠⠀
I just needed to hear those simple words - and to know that it IS possible to just stop. Are you constantly talking down to yourself and criticizing every little thing about yourself? ⠀⁠⠀
⠀⁠⠀
I'll give you the same challenge I give the girls in my Awaken Your Purpose program. I challenge you to stop - when a negative thought comes up, tell yourself NO. I'm just not going to think this about myself anymore. And think the exact opposite thought. Before you know it, your mind is filled with loving thoughts that build you up rather than tear you down. 💕⁠⠀

  • Happiness and productivity are linked.⁣

A lack of productivity leads to a lack of happiness and vice versa. When life is getting you down and you can’t see yourself making progress or getting things done, you get anxious and become stressful.⁣
⁣
So when life gets busy and you become stressful and anxious, I suggest you find purpose in your productivity because being busy means doing more and more things that will stress you out while being productive means doing something with purpose. Always strive for accomplishing something rather than simply doing more.⁣
⁣
That way you will be both happy and productive hence enjoying your life!⁣

  • Have you ever compared, criticised or judged anyone?

It’s easy to do, without even realising.

The person I’m most concerned about you comparing, criticising or judging is you.

Are you tempted to look at your past self and and berate yourself for being imperfect or making mistakes?

Or have you judged your past self to such a high standard that you now wonder if you could ever match up to that person?

Do you look at your future self and judge that person to be better than you are now, you know, when life is perfect and the situation is ideal?

Or do you judge your future self harshly, thinking that nothing will ever change and that your future self isn’t going to be who you want them to be?

However you view yourself, watch out for the temptation to compare criticise or judge.

Certainly, visualise who you would like to be. But let that vision serve as an inspiration and not a discouragement.

Observe your thoughts and let go of the CCJ of compare-criticise-judge.

Notice the wonderful parts of you. Accept, or call a truce on, the not so hot parts (rest assured, we all have them). Move forward without harsh thoughts about you.

Imagine being your best friend, always having your own back and feeling confident and authentic.
