When I was a kid, we didn't have any lilacs in our garden and I didn't encounter them anywhere else in our little Portland suburb. I never saw them anywhere when I moved down to Los Angeles for a few years, either, probably because the temperature is a touch too scorching for their cool temperament.

I didn't actually encounter a lilac until I was in my mid-twenties, surprisingly enough. It was during a visit to Missoula, where Jeremy's family lives. It must have been over Memorial Day weekend, since we didn't get much time off work during that period, so it was about this time of year, I think.
.
I remember walking along the road, Jeremy having just parked the car, and heading to someplace like Big Dipper Ice Cream or Rockin' Rudy's. The smell hit me first. Sweet, not cloying, but gentle, deep, and delicate. Like if a rose and jasmine had a scent baby. It was a wonderful, heady smell.
.
I turned my head to see what on earth this was coming from, and saw a solid wall of lavender next to a parking strip. It was a hedge wall of old-growth lilacs, towering over 7 feet tall and packed from stem to crown with pale purple plumes, each one coated in hundreds of tiny blossoms.
.
It was love at first whiff, although I wouldn't encounter them again until we moved back to Portland years later, when I was driving around during our first spring and saw them blooming. I pulled the car over and cut some off a street corner with my car keys like a maniac because I was so ecstatic.
.
Luckily, I ended up having an old bush at our new-to-us house, and that's what I used to make these guys. You can find the recipe via the link in profile, and enjoy their fresh scent all summer long 👆🏼

  • When Melanie and I first walked up to the open yard of chickens and goats at Pajaro Pastures, I think we both were a little confused. “So you just let them roam free?” “What do you mean you don’t lock them in pens at night?” “Umm, do you not have coyote problems?” And Ryan just casually reached down to pat one of the waist-high Anatolian Pyrenees dogs that had greeted us at the fence. “That’s why we have these guys,” he replied, and informed us about the history of these shepard dogs in what is now Turkey, where they were bred to ward off predators such as wolves and bears — so yeah, coyotes aren’t such a big deal to them. In their years of raising truly free-range chickens, Pajaro Pastures has yet to lose any animals to predators.

There’s something really special about entering a space where the chickens, goats, and dogs all casually interact with each other, and the wisdom of this historic livestock system is hard to miss.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Having this system allows Pajaro Pastures to practice rotational grazing. Soon the coops, animals, and temporary fencing will be shifted to another area, and the land will be allowed to rest and regenerate.

Pattani Kuzhambu is a South Indian style vegan dish made with dry peas or vatana. This flavorful dish is a quick alternative to our regular, sambar and I usually make it when I am craving for South Indian food but lazy to cook a sambhar. This with rice is like one golden combo! Entering the long weekend with a bang! Woohoo!!!
