Menopause is simply a natural transition in a woman’s life as her menstrual cycles come to an end. Changes in hormones can cause symptoms like hot flashes and poor sleep and may negatively affect metabolism and bone density. . .

Did you know that there's evidence that certain foods may help relieve some symptoms of menopause, such as hot flashes, poor sleep and low bone density. . .

FOODS TO FOCUS ON:

Dairy

Quality protein

Healthy fats 
Whole Grains

Fruits and vegetables

Phytoestrogen-containing foods: found in  soybeans, chickpeas, peanuts, flax seeds, barley, grapes, berries, plums, green and black tea and many more . .

FOODS TO AVOID:

Processed Carbs & Added Sugars

Alcohol & Caffeine

High Sodium Meals (Too much salt)

Depending on your body, SPICY FOODS too!!! (I don't know if I can let go of my spicy foods though 🤔 maybe until then, we'll find out of it'll affect za body) . .

All these is to ensure we know OUR WHY! Make sure you're embarking on this journey with a ROCK-SOLID WHY! It'll push you when you're down right tired and de-motivated to go on! . .

  • "Functional Fitness"

I like to use exercises which fall under that category for several reasons, and I figure this is a good medium to share - despite 5 second attention spans. 
To be clear "Functional Fitness" can be defined as any exercise which will than serve the individual doing the exercise by facilitating movement outside of a fitness atmosphere easier. 
In the case of a sledge hammer and tire type exercise, that would only apply to people who chop wood or are involved in demolition. 
Outside of my definition of "Functional Fitness" I find that there are several wellness and fitness benefits that stack in the group of movements. 
I find most functional efforts have several joints involved and they consistently include more than 2 directions of movement.  This allows for lots of creativity, innovation and stability during the exercises.  Multi-planar multi-joint exercises also have a higher metabolic cost and will work more muscles per movement, meaning that the opportunity to mechanically disrupt your muscle and  burn calories will go up.  The more muscles you move per movement the faster your heart rate will be affected. 
When challenges are novel and practical it will lead the person exercising to have higher chances of physical adaption (build muscle, burn fat, get stronger, have more endurance, better mobility), and more fun (reward). The real downside to unconventional exercises of this nature is the increased likelihood of dangerous movement patterns (have you ever hit yourself in the shin with a sledge hammer?). Often individuals will do a less conventional exercise because they saw it on a #nike, #underarmour, or #adidas commercial.  Please try to be aware of what part of your fitness you are trying to challenge and incorporate your choice of exercise accordingly. .

Happy Friday peeps! Coming at you with another one of my workouts from this week, this was a pull workout - so focusing on back and biceps 🤟🏼.
I’m trying out a heavy 5x5 range on my 3 big lifts (squat, deadlift, bench) to see if I can push up my strength again (have lost strength this summer), and then focusing on hypertrophy (10 reps is my sweet spot) for the rest of the workouts (want to keep growing my legs & arms in size)! So will keep you updated how it goes 🤓

  • BALANCE | I get asked sometimes how I manage working, owning a gym, having a small child, fitness, and all the other things life throws at us all.

The truth is sometimes I don’t manage it very well. I get stressed, tired, cranky, but I’ve learned a few small hacks over the last couple years:

1. Stick to your strengths - you can’t do it all and do it all well. Stay in your lane.

2. Prioritize - I’m a list maker. I write down everything that needs done in the order of priority. “Me time” like working out, reading, or doing whatever you enjoy should be high on the list.

3. Learn to say “NO” - I used to be so bad at this. My guilt and people pleaser mindset would get the best of me. But you cannot please everyone. YOU’RE NOT CHOCOLATE. 🍫

4. Exercise - when I go more than a day or two without exercise, I just don’t feel great. Exercise boosts endorphins, your body’s feel-good chemical. When you feel good, you can accomplish more. 🙌🏻
