  • *FALAFEL*
_______________

  • ”Food before one is just for fun”. I bet you’ve heard this one before. Although food can and should be fun, baby’s growing body actually has high nutritional needs. The truth is that every bite counts.

Which is one of the reasons why baby-led weaning can be intimidating at first. There is often food being splattered, there’s gagging, there’s the occasional vomit - and very little food actually going into baby’s mouth at first.
I was overall very anxious with and around Simon as a first-time mom, so BLW wasn’t really an option for us then. This time around I’ve learned to embrace the mess and, more importantly, trust that Lia knows best. As long as she’s hungry, she keeps trying to grab and bring food to her mouth. Once she’s not hungry any more, her focus shifts somewhere else. And that’s ok! Some days she eats more, other days less. My job as her mom is to offer healthy food a few times a day, and to respect and trust that she knows how much food she actually needs. I don’t force her to nurse, so why should I force her to eat?

It’s been a steep learning curve for both Lia and I, but we’ve made so much progress in the 1+ month since introducing solids to her. Look 👏🏼 at 👏🏼 her 👏🏼 go 👏🏼. By now she doesn’t like it when I try to feed her, and much prefers trying to grab the spoon or food by herself. A huge benefit of BLW is that finger foods are not only fun, they also help improve dexterity and teach babies how to chew and manage food in their mouths safely. It’s fascinating to witness Lia becoming more confident and independent by the day. And she’s only 7.5 months. 😭

#fingerfoods #fingerfood #fingerfoodideas #fingerfoodcasamento #weddingfingerfood #fingerfoodwedding #weddingfood #ideiasnoivas #ideiasdecasento #wedding #casamento #inspiracaonoivas #inspiracaocasamento #noivas2019 #noivassantacatarina #noivassc

  • The age old tale of weaning making babies sleep longer dies hard!! Delicate tummies can be upset by large amounts of solid food to begin, and cause gut issues which may be lifelong.
Although the current research shows a very different picture (over the last 15 years at least), parents buy into the marketing of food manufacturers selling their wares and babies are being weaned against current guidance as young as 10 weeks old 🙊😭 based only on old school parenting doing so "and it did us no harm" (more on that next week!!) From around 5/6 months, babies are able to sit (aided, or unaided), and they begin to lose the tongue thrust before which pushes food they are unable to safely chew and swallow, back out. Their hand/eye coordination becomes honed, and they learn to use different grips to pick up and bring objects to their mouth.
Amounts of food aren't important as baby learns the art of how to chew and swallow safely, they will pick up food and experiment with the textures both in their hands and mouths.
Slowly does it. Milk forms the main nutritional needs for a baby upto 1 year, and solids are complementary, as the enjoyment of food is learned.
Baby led weaning when baby controls their intake via finger foods or loaded spoons, also allows them to regulate their own appetite and reduces the risk of over eating which can inadvertently happen when solely spoon feeding prescribed amounts in jars and cartons.
Start with whole foods which are easy to digest and move through the food groups slowly over the course of time as baby learns the art of chewing, swallowing and digesting new foods.

  • If you’re a new parent, you may be worried about exposing your little one to bacteria, however not all bacteria are considered “bad for you!” In fact, the human body has trillions of bacteria, viruses and fungi that live in the gut-microbiome, and they all play a very important role in health.
