...............................................
The present ruins date from the 13th to the 16th centuries, though built on the site of an early medieval fortification. Founded in the 13th century, Urquhart played a role in the Wars of Scottish Independence in the 14th century. It was subsequently held as a royal castle, and was raided on several occasions by the MacDonald Earls of Ross. The castle was granted to the Clan Grant in 1509, though conflict with the MacDonalds continued. Despite a series of further raids the castle was strengthened, only to be largely abandoned by the middle of the 17th century. Urquhart was partially destroyed in 1692 to prevent its use by Jacobite forces, and subsequently decayed.
Subsequent plundering of the stonework and other materials for re-use by locals further reduced the ruins, and the Grant Tower, seen in my pic, partially collapsed following a storm in 1715.
By the 1770s the castle was roofless, and was regarded as a romantic ruin by 19th-century painters and visitors to the Highlands. In 1884 the castle came under the control of Caroline, Dowager Countess of Seafield, widow of the 7th Earl of Seafield, on the death of her son the 8th Earl. On Lady Seafield's death in 1911 her will instructed that Urquhart Castle be entrusted into state care and opened to the public.
Historic Environment Scotland is managing the site
It is now one of the most-visited castles in Scotland.
I love to take the short boat ride over Loch Ness when visiting there. It's the best way to see the dimensions of the castle. In its days it must have been an impressive sight.

The 14th Century Tower House is the Clan seat of the MacKenzie clan, and currently the family home of the Clan Chief, the Earl of Cromartie. Located near Strathpeffer, Castle ‘Leod’ or ‘Liotr’ is a Viking name which can be traced to an uncle of the mighty Norseman Thorfinn, Jarl of Orkney and Caithness. Thorfinn established himself in the area in the 11th Century after the local ‘Battle of Torfness’ when King Duncan was slain and Thorfinn’s half brother, Macbeth, Mormaer of Ross and Moray, became King of Scotland.
The former Pictish fort on the mound was replaced by the Norse Earls with a stone built keep in the eleventh century by Liotr or Leod or by his kinsman, Jarl Olaf.
It is not known what further building work was carried out over the centuries except that by the late15th century it looked much like it does today.

The castle was granted to John of Killin, 10th Chief of Clan MacKenzie (1485-1561) after he fought at the Battle of Flodden.
The current castle is the result of work carried out in the early 17th century by Sir Roderick Mackenzie, the ancestor of the Earl of Cromartie. The castle has remained the seat of the Earls of Cromartie ever since.
In 1746 George Mackenzie, 3rd Earl of Cromartie, forfeited the estate, following his support for the ill-fated 1745 Jacobite Uprising. The estates, but not the title, were restored to his son in 1784. The castle was reported to already be in a run-down state earlier in the same century, when the estate was badly debt-ridden. —————————————————
