  • Finally! Here is my post and story of the Inter-Canadien F28-1000 that overran the runway in St. John’s, Newfoundland on August 1 of 1999, after departing from Halifax, Nova Scotia. C-GTIZ, operating flight 2210, touched down on runway 16, which was wet at the time and had a displaced threshold, reducing the runway to 5,530ft. The aircraft touched down 1500ft beyond the already displaced threshold and was unable to stop at the end of the runway. The plane came to rest approximately 420ft past the end of runway 16, when the nose gear collapsed. The braking system was not sufficient, nor are the F28 engines equipped with reverse thrust. Out of the 56 people on board (plus 4 crew), 5 passengers and 2 crew members sustained minor injuries. The crew instructed the passengers to brace, as the plane skidded past the end of the runway. Because there was no threat to the lives on-board, after the aircraft came to rest beyond the runway, the passengers were instructed to stay seated, followed by the captain ordering an evacuation through the front right door, as the main front left door could not be opened due to the position of the plane jamming the air stairs. Weather at the time was partly cloudy at 18C with winds at 5 knots. Despite the damage sustained to the belly and nose gear of C-GTIZ, the airplane was repaired and put back into service for Canadian Regional Airlines. It was later parked and sourced out for parts at YXE (Saskatoon). *SWIPE FOR OVERHEAD SCHEMATIC DIAGRAM*
