  • What an interesting few weeks it has been for all of us around the world. I've had a business come to a stop overnight, a trip back home to Australia cancelled, the majority of my income lost and some tears shed. It is crazy to think that this time a year ago, my partner and I were selling our belongings and preparing for our move from Australia to Scotland. I didn't envision our second year in Scotland to involve being in lockdown in our flat in Edinburgh.
⁣
⁣⁣Despite this, I'm incredibly grateful for what I do have. We may not have control over the situation, but we have control over our reaction and what we do with this time. I'm slowly finding the silver linings that appear in situations like this and focusing on what I can do. I'm so lucky - I can still think, learn, create and do so many beautiful things from home that bring me joy. I have learnt to truly appreciate our home and surroundings, especially this view from our bedroom window.

  • 🌲⛏🌿 Wild Ritual 🌿⛏🌲
.
.
So anyone who had been following me for a while will remember that my epic boyfriend recently gave me the best present ever - an antique Axe (I know right, who says romance is dead). People who know me best will surely tell you that the way to my heart is definately through the strange/ possibly dangerous end of the spectrum and with this amazing find it's definately love. .
⛏
.
The last few months this beaut has been a side project for me, lovingly, sanded, buffed, stripped and wire brushed all by hand to bring her back to former glories while still keeping the gnarly details intact. Underneath years of neglect was a beautiful and well used tool that I just new was going to be awell loved part of my practice in the wild. In my hands was something special, something with a history and a past life, something that cannot be manufactured, replicated or bought. My energy has went into restoring something that was gifted to me and that alone makes it in its own way sacred.
.
🌿
.
So firece is my reverence to the untamable nature that I am often surrounded by that I feel that nothing other than something special and beautiful should be used. The ritual of creating starts at the very beginning of my processes and harvesting should be no exception. If my offerings are made under the namesake of a warrior queen then a tool fit also for battle seems fitting too! .
⛏
.
To finish my restoration (so far) wooden handle has been oiled with intention using an oil I crafted myself from the woods it will be harvesting. Rapeseed oil from Scotland slow infused with boughs of Conifer, Scots Pine and Cedar from only my very favourite trees, all to connect the axe to the land. Finally she was blessed by the smoke of evergreen branches on the banks of Loch Lomond. .
🌿
.
I know most people will find this level of effort totally insane and unnessecary, but what is witchcraft if not just an outpouring of devotion.
.
They say that the Devil's in the detail but personally I think so is the Divine.

  • My therapy to cope with not being able to get out into the hills is living vicariously through other people’s adventures in podcast form. Today when I was deleting old pictures off my phone (honestly swimming in free time these days 😂) I found photos of some of my earliest hikes so I could live vicariously through my own (much less exciting!) adventures for a while.
————
To save y’all from the same old content I thought I’d share a few ones here, so this is me on Day 2 of my solo wall of the West Highland Way in September 2016. Essentially my first hike since DofE and I didn’t really train for it, just relied on the fact that I was quite fit and bloody-minded 😂
————
I’d just split up with my boyfriend of nearly 6 years, recently graduated from university and was mourning the result of the Brexit referendum and was SO READY for 6 days of walking alone with my thoughts. Honestly it was probably the best trip I’ve ever done 💚

  • Stepping through the archway leaving Edinburgh Castle has the feeling of entering the city of Edinburgh all over again. In the distance you can see the Hub dominating the skyline. Although it looks like a church it was never consecrated as one, built in 1845 it was originally called Victoria Hall and used to house the general Assembly.

Couple interesting facts on Edinburgh Castle itself.

1) It has a gun similar to our 9'o clock gun in Vancouver that fires everyday. It's original purpose was for sailors to set there
chronometers to the correct time.

2) It was built ontop of a volcano. Archeological data shows that people have lived there since 850 BC and the architecture was originally built over the plug of the volcanoes vent.

3) It's the most besieged Castle in Great Britain, having been attacked 23 times.

4) Best prices for tickets are found online at https://www.edinburghcastle.scot/plan-your-visit/tickets

  • Today marks the 700th anniversary of the Declaration of Arbroath.
.
The letter was written in 1320 asking the pope to recognise Scotland's independence and acknowledge Robert the Bruce as the country's lawful king.
.
„... for, as long as but a hundred of us remain alive, never will we on any conditions be brought under English rule. It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom – for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself.“

  • Lochranza Castle was founded in the 13th century by the MacSweens or the Stewards of Menteith; in 1266 it became the property of the Scottish Royal Family. Around 1450 the castle came into the possession of the Montgomerie family, who converted it into a Tower House in the late 16th century, before it was given as collateral for a loan to the Dukes of Hamilton at the beginning of the 18th century. In the 19th century the castle fell into ruin.

  • Stac Pollaidh, River Polly Valley, March 2020

One of my favourite parts of the Assynt area. I've still got plenty of exploring to do at this location.
This is not a great pic, the foreground to the right is a bit empty but when the rainbow appeared there wasn't much time to faff about switching lenses. Better to catch a moment and preserve a lovely memory.
What a beautiful spot.

  • Scotland Fix of the Day: Eilean Donan castle on Loch Duich has the highest ratio of shutter clicks to hours of daylight of any castle in Scotland. The fairytale bridge hosts countless wedding portraits as well as movie sword fights. But it’s a modern addition, part of the early 20th century reconstruction; a bridge is pretty but a bad idea if a rival clan is after your blood. MacKenzies held the castle but picked the Jacobite cause leading to it being demolished with 27 kegs of gunpowder in 1719. There’s plenty more murderous history to go with that bit. (And, no, Jaime Fraser did not sleep here with Claire.) #scotland #highlands #outlander. #getolympus

  • Scotland Fix of the Day: Remarkable how we become embedded in a place. Finding that red phone booth on that stormy evening beside Loch Eriboll in the far north sticks with me. Stuck out there in the middle of nowhere and the light was on! This was 26 years ago, my first assignment in Scotland and it was going badly. I stopped to photograph it and then I called Kathy, my wife. “I’m failing,” I told her, “they’re going to find out I don’t know what I’m doing!” She could hear my panic. “There, there,” she said, “stick with it. You’ll make it work.” She was right. The story was a success, the first of many in Scotland. I’m sure the phone booth is no longer in use, but it saved me that night and lingers fondly in my memory. #scotland

  • Scotland Fix of the Day: Skara Brae in Orkney has a particular grip on our imagination; it’s so easy to imagine daily life there 5,000 years ago. The bay was further off then, and the “village” probably bigger, but just this one domestic scene alone speaks of domestic life we can easily understand. Then abandonment and the dunes took over until a winter storm in 1850 revealed the first hints that something very human had been lost and forgotten. The story of Neolithic life is extraordinarily rich in Orkney and for that I’d refer you to my friend Sigurd Towrie’s excellent web site Orkneyjar.com. (Follow the link in my profile.) #scotland #orkney

After trudging along the river for a while we came across this spot with the nice little rapids leading into Buachaille Etive Mor. At just the right moment some fleeting light finally washed across the Buachaille and all our efforts paid off. A great morning and typical of the challenges and rewards of landscape photography. .

  • ⁣Sad times: ⠀
⠀
Just now I am writing this post from inside my flat, looking back at all my photos and thinking about how long it will be until I can fully travel again (or even if a curfew will be put in place in the coming months). The media has hyped everything up a lot but it’s feeling like this Corona issue could actually be devastating now. ⠀
⠀
On another note, I’ll be semi-surviving the apocalypse and travelling through the northern highlands whilst also conducting my Edinburgh Instagram tours this summer (in a mask of course), perfect opportunity to skip the ques 😂⠀
⠀
P.s. I’m joking, don’t travel

  • Scotland Fix of the Day: Wow, your response yesterday was wonderful to behold. So many requests for favorite places in Scotland! I’m compiling a list and a plan for posting them all. Stay tuned. First up, how about Callanish on the Isle of Lewis. It’s not Craigh na Dun from Outlander (that one’s fictional) but maybe there is comfort right now in believing a place might have the power to magically transport us to another time. UPDATE: For all of you who ordered cards, your packages are on the way. Thank you so much.
