  • WHAT IS A HOME WITHOUT A HOMELAND? I’ve finally put pen to paper and started writing about my most recent journey back to the Philippines. In this first blog for @cambio_co, I reflect on my family’s home in Parañaque and what it represents.
•
BF, as we affectionately call it, has been our family home for decades. It’s owned by one of my titos and titas, but my grandparents have lived there, as well as my parents and various aunts, uncles, cousins, and nephews. It’s a home that has lived through so much – laughter, countless dramas, reunions and separations, death, and even afterlife (yes, ghosts of different family members have been known to roam its halls!) But on this trip, living in that home felt disconcertingly different. It was just so quiet, so empty. And I realized that it’s because most of my family no longer lives here. Almost all of us have moved abroad.
•
Like many Filipinos, our family’s dream has always been to move to Canada or the US. Our family’s dream has always been to leave the Philippines so that we could all have a better life while being close to each other. For decades, my Titas, the fierce and powerful matriarchs of my family, busted their asses off to make that dream happen. And here it was. The emptiness a testament to a dream come true
•
You’d think a dream realized would be a joyful thing but I don’t know, instead it just made me feel deeply, deeply sad. You can find the reasons why and all my other reflections in the link in bio. For those of you whose whole families have migrated, tell me your stories! Do you still go back “home”? How, if at all, have your ideas of home shifted?.
•
This blog is just the first of a series I’m writing that’s all about my experiences as a Balikbayan*. Thanks to @cambio_co for creating space for my musings and giving me the platform to share this with the wider Filipino diaspora

*Balikbayan is a Filipino visiting or returning to the Philippines after a period of living in another country.

It’s also fitting that it’s #nationallumpiaday because we’ll always have Roland! 😂 #entrepinay #entrepinays #piscesseason

  • Last month, I was given the wonderful opportunity to revamp @islastoronto 's chalkboard menu. And that means being spoiled by Chef @mrcbuen 's mouthwatering Halo-halo and lumpia! Talk about the ideal project, you guys!

Swipe left to see the finished piece! ✨

  • Happy Friday! I'm excited to join @lululemon Seattle for Movement for Change, a fun workout and panel event next Friday, 3/22! @kaisafit & @getclairefied will lead a 45-minute workout, then I'll be joining a few other women on a panel discussing gender equality. Tickets are donation-based, and proceeds benefit @jubileewomenscenter. I'll be working out alongside you before the panel, so apologies if I'm sweaty during the talk 🤣😩💪🏽🤷🏻‍♀️ p.s. the first 50 participants that register will get a complimentary lululemon yoga mat! See link in my bio for more event info and to register!

  • Filipino slang for “I’m so speechless and impressed with you that this is literally the only phrase I can say.” .
.
Examples: “You just launched your dream business!? Naks naman.” .
.
“So, Sis, did you really turn down that customer because you know your worth and these discounts didn’t make sense?! Naks naman.”
.
.
“You just raised seed capital AND a human?! Naks naman.”
.
.
“Did you really just book that gig??? Naks naman.”
.
.
There are many ways to use naks naman or “naks” for short. And for sure, we think of this phrase a lot when we see all the amazing things you’re all doing. So, next time you catch up with your entrepinay sisters and can’t quite find the words to say how impressed you are, just say #NaksNaman. .

  • Expressing gratitude barely scratches the surface of what last night’s gathering with my parents, Aunty Ave and Uncle Joel meant to me... what a complete honor. Maraming Salamat po for your tulong, Mahalo nui for your kōkua, taking the time to talk story, share your guidance and ‘Ike, your knowledge, with me, and being kumu, source of knowledge - the gift and passion you share with your haumāna every day. Thank you for your bayanihan - the mana of community, passion for the arts, and kuleana to preserve the culture is very alive and well, all thanks to pioneers like you. I’m so blessed to have parents, (Philippine-born and raised, military and Catholic parents at that) who are so incredibly understanding and supportive of our career path and love for the arts. Here’s to being humbled and lifted by the strength of community and mentorship, always showing respect and a constant dedication to learn, being a strong pinay and supporting the mana wahine around me, and more room for growth, community, collaboration, and compassion! #chieflearner #2.0 #roots #galang #corevalues #servantleadership #knlfolkarts #entrepinay
