  • Whether we feel it or not, we are trying our best. Trauma has reworked our brains. How we think, feel, and function is now different. And, that difference isn’t bad. It’s important for us to be gentle with ourselves. After all, we’re trying our best.

  • We want to hear from Maine survivors of sexual violence. If you are a survivor, please consider taking the survey in our bio to share your views to help inform juvenile justice reform efforts happening in Maine. The survey should take between 5 and 10 minutes. Please help us share this request with your personal and professional networks. Remember that survivors are part of many communities and fields. Thank you!
Link to survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/7HWSDDP
Information about the survey:
This survey is for survivors of sexual violence in Maine. The Maine Coalition Against Sexual Assault (MECASA) is seeking survivor input to inform statewide conversations about potential juvenile justice reform. It is important for us to hear from survivors so that we can effectively advocate on your behalf. We value your opinions. The results from this survey will not independently determine MECASA’s position on these issues. You may answer as many or as few survey questions as you like. Responses to the survey may be shared publicly; however, we will do our best to not share answers that identify you. The less personal details shared, the more anonymous your feedback is.
In addition to this survey, if you have thoughts on juvenile justice reform as it pertains to your experience, you are welcome to send your thoughts by email at info@mecasa.org or by mail to:
Maine Coalition Against Sexual Assault
45 Memorial Circle #302
Augusta, ME 04330
If you mail or email stories, please be clear if you are willing for these stories to be shared publicly. To learn more about these efforts happening in Maine or to get involved directly, visit the Maine Juvenile Justice System Assessment & Reinvestment Task Force website.
Thank you!

  • Hello everyone, I would like to share this important event that Hope24/7 is hosting in Brampton and they invite those who have experienced trauma to anonymously report their story. Oftentimes people don’t file a report because of feeling shame in relation to themselves and their very being.

Did you know?
* 1 in 3 females and 1 in 5 males will experience physical and sexual violence in their lifetime.
* Higher rates for marginalized and vulnerable groups
* 80% know their perpetrator
* In Peel only Hope 24/7 and Chantel’s place are able to take third party reports
* Nationally 5% of survivors report to the police (down from 14% in 2014)

Third Party Reporting
Allows non-police organizations to take anonymous reports of sexual Violence.

  • I didn't fight back during my sexual assault. (I talked about it in my previous post if you missed it). But that's because the only fighting I've ever been taught in self-defense classes were physical fighting techniques. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
There are so many more ways you can effectively fight. And they all don't involve physical contact. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But the important thing to remember is every fight is different. Sometimes you have to physically fight. But that's why we stress that education is key in protecting yourself. If you have a wide variety of ways you can fight then you can use the one that is best for you and your situation.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This week, we are going to talk about how to fight through distraction. Some of the techniques we are going to share with you could have really benefitted me in stopping my sexual assault. And none of them required physical contact.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Have any questions in the meantime? Comment below and ask me any questions you have about fighting.

there’s more than one “one size fits all” solution to seeing something that’s off and gives u a bad gut feeling. I hope this post helps give more ideas on how different approaches may be better/worse in different situations.
i encourage you to save this to your collections bc you never know when you’re gonna witness something that gives u that bad gut feeling that you should do something to protect someone. I think it’s important to have conversations not just around our own personal experiences with interpersonal violence but also about how we can help prevent violence in our community when we have the opportunity. We can’t act like this is a problem perpetrated exclusively by cishet men onto cis women. There is interpersonal violence in the wlw community too!
Intervening can be really scary and embarrassing and i feel that, i rly do, but at the same time if i misread situations 99 times out of a hundred that still leaves 1 time where i did something that prevented pain for another person and that’s worth the 99 times where i embarrassed myself. i think it’s important that we spread these tools to more members in our community, and you can expect more posts educating on different aspects of this from me in the future. I worked as a peer educator and survivor advocate for a few years in college so i know a bit about it. not sure how coherent all that was but 🤷🏼‍♀️ #rapeculture #pyramidofviolence #consentissexy #consentculture #consent #bystanderintervention #bystanderinterventiontechniques #bystanderintervention #stopsexualassault #endsexualviolence #endsexualassault #metoo

  • On this day of giving, I would love your support in raising funds and awareness about this special non-profit organization formed to support victims of sexual assault. Funds are raised to support victims with aid for legal costs in the court system and for supportive therapies to help heal from this trauma that can impact victims for the rest of their lives.
There are very few women I know that have not experienced sexual assault, rape or sexual objectification at some point in their life. I am proud to serve this organization as a board member in honor of my patients, friends, family, colleagues and all people who have faced this type of trauma and endured life changing PTSD as a result. I do this for my nieces and all the young people that we still have an opportunity to protect and raise to exist in a safer culture.

Please donate directly through PayPal (link in comments and profile today)

Do this for someone you know who has been a victim.
Do this for someone you are trying to protect.
Do this for the someone that doesn't have someone to support them through a very difficult journey.

Thank you for your contribution and for raising awareness. WIth Love. @andtheyspoke .

  • Porn is just sex, and sex is natural, so what can be wrong with it—right? Wrong.

A few years ago, a team of researchers looked at 50 of the most popular porn films—the ones purchased and rented most often. Of the 304 scenes the movies contained, 88% contained physical violence and 49% contained verbal aggression. On average, only one scene in 10 didn’t contain any aggression, and the typical scene averaged 12 physical or verbal attacks. One particularly disturbing scene managed to fit in 128!

The amount of violence shown in porn is astonishing but equally disturbing is the reaction of the victims. In the study, 95% of the victims (almost all of them women) either were neutral to the abuse or appeared to respond with pleasure.

It is clear to see that, in these porn scenes, violence is shown as a sexual fantasy. What is sexy about that?
