  • The diverter valve is part of the turbo charger system. If the vehicle is under boost and you lift off the throttle it will close and the boost will need to go somewhere. This is where the diverter valve comes in and allows the boost to bleed off.

The stock diverter is made from rubber and plastic internals. When the boost turns up the turbo outlet temperature increases, as does the pressure, and these valves really can’t keep up. This causes issues with the weak part of the factory diverter which is the plastic. The factory valve also only operates in two states - open or closed. 
When it fully opens at low boost, or during a partial throttle lift , it causes increased lag and a noticeably non- linear boost transition. This is what I didn’t like and wanted to sort out!

The GFB VTA is made from metal which is better than the plastics but the valve operation is different for better performance. This aftermarket part works by re-purposing the factory solenoid to control the pressure behind the piston rather than the piston itself. This leads to speeding up the response time and increasing the actuation force. More importantly, it allows the piston to open and close progressively in response to the amount of boost pressure present, providing smoother transition and reducing the lag.

This was a much more straightforward job compared to the cam follower change but still over the moon about it and really pleased with the change in the feel of the drive.
