- Stok Kangri Winter Expedition // Part IV
From Chang Ma (4,000 m) we made our way to Mankarmo (4,300 m), which would serve as our base camp for this Winter ascent. Now, a 300 m gain in elevation might not seem like much; but the altitude and the harsh conditions we had to weather made it a tedious and laborious day’s work.
To top it all off, it snowed heavily all morning; and so we found ourselves wading through knee-high snow for most of the day. In every direction, there was only a blanket of white as far as the eye could see. Going to the bathroom was a less than private affair whilst on the trail, and the only sort-of dry place to rest our weary legs was on our own backpacks. The struggle was indeed real.
Thinking back to moments like these, I’m reminded of how masochistic the act of climbing mountains can be. Because in these kinds of endeavors, it isn’t like the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow is a sure thing – far from it, actually. Most summits are highly uncertain, and the only outcomes that are all but guaranteed are some measure of pain and suffering.
So, why do it? How can there be a sense of immense satisfaction from suffering for days on end for a singular goal? Well, in my experience – it’s not the summit that we’re really after, but instead, I think we’re hoping to find a better version of ourselves somewhere along the way. Every one of us is looking to evolve in some way or the other, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that growth is not born out of comfort.
Pain can be a privilege. Not only because it’s essential for growth, but also because in order to intentionally seek out discomfort, our daily lives have to be relatively comfortable in the first place. To struggle at something simply because you want to – now isn’t that a wondrous thing?
To be continued.

On Saturday morning we woke up to find all of our posts had disappeared from the face of the earth. Unfortunately we aren’t exactly sure what happened and have no idea whether or not the old posts will return so we’ve decided to use this as a fresh start and really ramp up activity here at @newzealandroamers by not only supplying plenty of fresh content to keep you inspired but more Instameets up and down the country to help bring us all closer together because nothing helps inspire us more than being around all of you incredibly talented, creative individuals! We appreciate everyone’s support you have given us on this page, it’s crazy to think how big this has grown and we are super humbled by it 💛
Here’s to the future!
