  • Beautiful views across the city 😍
We walked almost 20,000 steps today, exploring new places by foot is definitely the one. Croissant, coffee, walk, crepe, coffee, walk, baguette, coffee, walk... and repeat.

  • Halovin. (דער) האַלאָווין is Yiddish for ‘Halloween’. In German, האַלאָווין is ‘Halloween’ (lacks a definite article). In Hebrew, לֵיל כָּל הַקְּדוֹשִׁים (‘leyl kol hakdoshim’) is ‘Halloween’. I took the background image above in Graz, Austria; in August 2019. The background image above is not directly related to ‘Halloween’. However, I connected ‘Halloween’ with the time of day - dusk - the photograph was taken. Yiddish speakers and their descendants in Vienna before WW2 - I would guess - may have heard of Halloween, through correspondence with friends or relations living in the USA, for example. However, I would also guess, that the Legation of the United States of America to Austria in Vienna, may have organised, perhaps one or more events showcasing Halloween, which may have been reported on by the local press or knowledge of which may have been spread among locals through word of mouth by attendees. Bearing in mind that jazz and swing music originating in the USA - and their associated dance forms - were part of (though not exclusively) youth culture at the time; in both Vienna and in other urban centres, such as Graz; it is likely that there would have been a correspondingly keen interest in other aspects of the culture of the USA and; therefore; it is likely that quite a few ‘knowledge-seekers’ would have known about Halloween. 🎃😘 #yiddishreloaded
