  • Sunday morning seems like a good time to present paradise. Our Magpie’s Paradise. I’ll be sharing more of it and its story in the coming weeks. Our adventure in making it. What I learned. How its form changed. What I wanted to say from it, but then more importantly what the garden told me. What the experience taught me. And how it is not just the diamond and pearls and joyous experience, but also the lesser moments. The irritations, the failures and limits, these are part of paradise too.

This garden is about opening up. Visually it expresses that. It reaches for the sky and allows the sky to come in. It catches the light and whirls you around. But it isn’t too pretty getting lost in the clouds. It remains grounded and of this earth. That is gardening too. All gardens are of the earth, but trying to create paradise or heaven in some way.

This garden has been such a collective effort. It doesn’t belong to me so much as I got to be a part of it. Nicholas Tomlan made it happen in a thousand ways. Carl Kelly made the halo structure and crystal cove and tunnel and an artistry that I never could have fully gotten on paper. Keith Gibialante and Tess Krüs and Marie Tomlan built the nest, coming up with flowing lines and a graphic pattern that I hadn’t imagined and love. Enora Elmoznino set up an army constructing botanically inspired branches. And when her and Jolanthe Lalkens and Farhana Rasheed and Enora’s family were done it was like jeweled fruit and berries had grown and opened up in the back corner of the garden.

Thank you also to Jean-Yves Gella, Mary Roxann Dykes Carstensen, Eric Lenoir, and Bella Gordon, as well as, of course, the entire organisation of the Chaumont Garden Festival. #chaumont #chaumontsurloire #chaumontsurloirefestivaldesjardins #domainedechaumontsurloire #studiotoop #studiotoopdesign #magpiesparadise #themagpiesparadise #leparadisdelapie #gardendesign #nicholastomlangardendesign #carriepreston #festivalsinternationaldesjarsins #domainedechaumontsurloire #jardinsdeparadis
